Have you ever eaten a deep fried Mars Bar?

NettleMania · 11/12/2021 21:25

Okay - hands up, I haven't.
But I was reading another thread and it got me thinking.
I love sweet things and am wondering if I should add this to my 2022 bucket list!
Have you tried one? If so a) did you enjoy it? b) did you eat a whole one? and c) would you recommend it for me to try?
Sorry, too many questions Blush

No wonder we have an obesity crisis. Promoting the eating of such calorific, unhealthy, sugary crap is very irresponsible of you op. And now that we have that out of the way, where can i get a deep fried mars bar please.

santasmuma · 11/12/2021 22:45

I think you can just get them in the chippies.

Obviously not in any of the chippers I have been in, otherwise I would know where to get one.

You were in the wrong takeaways.

Oh I don't know then... I can't imagine anywhere outside a chippy where you could find a friendly fryer to batter and deep fry confectionery!

I don't imagine the fancy ones in Anstruther would do battered Mars bars tbh. You'd need to find somewhere a bit more...earthy I think.

afrikat · 11/12/2021 22:49

Yes. It was amazing

fleur27 · 11/12/2021 22:51

Tried a bite of one once. Nicer than expected but wouldn't want a whole one.

If you want something really unusual and festive for your list how about these from a Scottish chippie:

Chloemol · 11/12/2021 22:53

Yes’m from the place in Scotland that started it. Lush!

SD1978 · 11/12/2021 22:53

Yes, you can get them easily in chippies I've been in in Edinburgh. Deep fried oven pizza.........now that is an utter delight of my childhood.

ODFOgrinch · 11/12/2021 22:55

@ShatteredDream

Yes, I’m Scottish and ate them as a teenager. Wouldn’t eat one now though 🤢

Deep fried pizza suppers with loads of chippy sauce are the food of gods though, still my go to chippy order

What is chippy sauce ? Thanks
SD1978 · 11/12/2021 22:57

@ODFOgrinch - a Scottish concoction of brown sauce and vinegar- only available in some Scottish chippies. Depending on where in Scotland you'll be asked salt and sauce or salt and vinegar as your 'standard' topping. Edinburgh is salt and sauce.

I have kind of eaten one. Not battered - I did the Everest base camp trek and you stay and eat in Nepalese tea houses. They do this dessert which is a Mars Bar wrapped inside Tibetan bread (which is sweet and a bit doughnutty) and then deep fried. When you’ve been trekking at high altitude all day you tend to lose your appetite, but you do need to eat to fuel you up for the next day, so those were perfect.

Libertaire · 11/12/2021 23:02

As an English person, I thought deep fried Mars bars were a joke, a myth. Then a couple of years ago I found myself in Paisley one evening and walked past a fish & chip shop which actually had them on the menu. Paisley isn’t the sort of place which would do this as a tourist gimmick, so it turns out they are real after all.

ISpyCobraKai · 11/12/2021 23:04

libertaire
I actually laughed at you saying that about Paisley!
Definitely not a tourist place.

EdgeOfTheSky · 11/12/2021 23:07

Yes, I had one in Leeds, I think.

I expected to hate it, but loved it! It tasted a bit burnt caramelly, frying it improved the flavour of the toffee.

We had one between 3 of us. I couldn’t have eaten more.

I had one a couple of nights ago. They're VERY sweet, sweeter than just a Mars bar somehow. Our local chippie does them standard on the menu, in London NW3

noblegreenk · 11/12/2021 23:39

Yes, I've had one.
Yes, I enjoyed it.
I did eat the whole thing.
Yes, I'd recommend trying one - if you don't like it you sent have to finish it.

It was about 20 years ago though, when I was at school. I don't think I'd polish off a whole one nowadays!

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/12/2021 23:50

I went into a chippie with DH in his home town in Scotland. In the space of about 5 minutes I witnessed a mini pizza then a Ginsters pasty being deep fried. The latter shook me to my west country roots.

CakesOfVersailles · 11/12/2021 23:54

I had one in Scotland once and ate the whole thing. The hot mars bar was quite nice but I felt the batter detracted from it. In the future I would just put a mars bar in a bowl and microwave it from the comfort of my own home.

sociallydistained · 11/12/2021 23:55

Yes I have in about 2001 😂 My Nan bought us both one from the Fish and Chip shop. I liked it but was full. I remember my Nan absolutely loving it 😂

Novasmummy · 11/12/2021 23:58

Yes I've had a few Blush as a teenager they were a brilliant way to get a burst of energy and cost less than a quid, so left me half my lunch money to go towards cigarettes or cider, or on fizzy drinks.

ISpyCobraKai · 12/12/2021 00:01

MrsMoastyToasty
The deep fried pizza is called pizza crunch.
Totally standard here, I love it.
I've never seen or heard of a pasty being deep fried though, it's definitely not a thing.

FissionMailed · 12/12/2021 00:04

Yes, several, they're absolutely bloody gorgeous when done well.
Vile and greasy when done wrong.

CAN1M · 12/12/2021 01:49

Yes - and I'd do it again in an instant!!! 😋 They are the best thing ever!

Damnloginpopup · 12/12/2021 02:19

Not a full size one no, but I used to batter and deep fry my way through a tub of celebrations every now and again...one of each was a good portion to have.

Think I need to change the oil in my fryer now that Christmas is coming... 😋

RobertSmithsLipstick · 12/12/2021 02:21

Yes.
I thought it would be nice served with vanilla icecream.
