What is your favourite conspiracy theory?

I love the crazy conspiracy theories. So my favourite ones are that birds arent real and that Paul McCartney is dead and the man we see now is a lookalike.
What about you?

My feeling about conspiracies is that it's quite hard to organise a lot of people to do something fake, but relatively easy to make people keep quiet about something that has been done. So faking the moon landings, for instance, would have required recruiting a huge number of scientists and other specialists who were genuinely passionate about their jobs and persuading them to essentially make a film instead of doing their actual job.

…and of course it wasn’t just a Moon landing, singular…

You’d have to keep the lie and everybody involved lying, from ‘61, when JFK “tasked” Apollo with the job of going to the Moon, right through the Mercury and Gemini flights, and up until Dec 72…and keep everybody lying until the day they died. I think people who didn’t live through the period don’t realise how much coverage the flights, pretty much all of them, got in the MSM of the day.

Or perhaps it would be easier to actually land on the Moon.

Cats are more intelligent than humans. They are the dominant species on this planet, & keep us as pets.

HoppingPavlova · 07/12/2021 13:15

That doesn't make it impossible of course-although I think Charles was still at Gordonstoun then & did he even know Camilla before he left school?

Yes, I don’t think he is Charles’s. Possibly may be Camilla and some random blokes before she met Charles and may have even been the reason they couldn’t get together (officially) in the beginning, too risky if the truth got out, not being a virgin etc, who knows.

I just feel embarrassed for the guy. He goes on and on about taking it to court etc, seemingly with the aim of ‘having a relationship’ with his ‘true’ family. Seriously, let’s say he was 14yo Charles’s love child, does he really think the Royals would want anything to do with such an illegitimate embarrassment and that he would be welcome with open arms at Sandringham for Xmas get-togethersConfused?

@BoredZelda

I remember when a former judge slammed the families of those who died at Hillsborough for not acting with dignity and chasing conspiracy theories. I'm really glad they did keep chasing for the truth about what actually happened that day.

I think the difference with hillsborough and actual conspiracy theories was that the actual evidence was practically irrefutable and it was the response from the authorities that couldn’t be shown to be based on anything factual. With conspiracy theories it’s usually the other way round.

Depends what we see as factual

I could be persuaded this is trueGrin
IBelieveInAThingCalledScience · 07/12/2021 13:18

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure there are very reputable Physicists and institutions currently researching the theory that "we're a simulation".

boobot1 · 07/12/2021 13:19

A lot of these just make you think, why would anyone do that?utterly bonkers. 10/10 for imagination though.

MattDillonsEyebrows · 07/12/2021 13:19

@Viviennemary

I only started bring suspicious of the moon landings a few years ago. The footage looks absolutely fake. Its easily found on you tube. Over 50 years since the moon landings and no other manned craft has been back since.
Isn’t that another conspiracy though? That Aliens told Buzz Aldrin not to come back? And that’s why they haven’t?
ElsieMc · 07/12/2021 13:20

My SIL's late brother, who died tragically in his twenties two years back, believed in a parallel universe. He was in the wrong one and would lead his happy life if he had been in the other. I had never heard of this but on telling my hairdresser he said he had clients who also believed this. He sometimes made fun of them but they stuck to their guns. Is this a thing others know of?

Doubts aside, I truly hope brother is happy now. Rest in Peace beautiful boy.

You're right, scary thought.
Werehamster · 07/12/2021 13:23

But why, whats the point

Apparently, Avril Lavigne had just had her first hit album when she became depressed and took her own life. The music label wanted to cash in on making more music with her, so found a replacement called Mellisa Vandella. It was all about making more money.

No, none of it makes sense, does it?

I've read so many times on MN that the Queen has actually died but they are waiting to announce it because they don't want her death to overshadow some event is crazy.

theDudesmummy · 07/12/2021 13:23

As I said upthread, there is persuasive argument that we are way more likely to be in a simulation than not. And about the probabilty of a Boltzmann Brain.

I haven't, but that is very exciting! I will have a binge listen and confirm that I am right Grin

@thestarvingcaterpillar

I used to go out with someone who didn't believe in dinosaurs or in fact in anything before he was born - he literally thought that the world began when he was born and would end when he died. I never really managed to get my head around it and still can't now. Not exactly a conspiracy theory but I'm sure he isn't the only person out there who thinks like this!
This is fascinating. How long could you stand to go out with him?
Werehamster · 07/12/2021 13:34

What about Prince Philip's will?

I heard that he left money to several of his mistresses and love children. I have no idea if it is true or not. I could believe it though.

thestarvingcaterpillar · 07/12/2021 13:38

@MelonTits too long!! When he had had a drink he would disappear down a wormhole of conspiracy theories that were beyond bizarre!

Thast's not original. There is a very old SF story about a bloke who believed this...that not just the world but the universe including God will end when he dies. He has had a terrible life and believes that God is responsible so he decides to commit suicide on the basis that this will end the universe and kill God.
BoredZelda · 07/12/2021 13:40

Depends what we see as factual

Facts are indisputable. They are known, evidence based and proven.

This is the problem. People believe the Kellyanne Conway assertion that there can be “alternative facts” There cannot be. You can have your own opinion, you cannot make up your own facts. The timeline of events and what happened was well established and there was actual evidence of a cover up.

Your initial comment was clearly meant to suggest that we should always consider that conspiracy theories might be true because one judge once tried to claim people were believing conspiracy theories in once scenario. The judge was wrong to label it a conspiracy theory as it didn’t meet the criteria of what would be considered a conspiracy theory.

I have rarely seen a fact” in a conspiracy theory that has been proven or that couldn’t be refuted, usually with the most basic of information. Most often there are a number of bits of information which are drawn together to form a conclusion. That conclusion never has a factual basis.

godmum56 · 07/12/2021 13:40

The Boltzman Brain is not a conspiracy theory its a thought experiment, like Shroedingers Cat and the monkeys typing Shakespeare.

There's talk of the Kray twins holding gay orgies where celebrities, MPs and Lords attended. Apparently Cliff Richard was a rent boy called Kitty
that was linked to the liar who the police believed and caused massive and nasty trouble for several MP's. This bloke www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-49048972
BoredZelda · 07/12/2021 13:45

I have no idea if it is true or not. I could believe it though.

Which is the real problem with conspiracy theories. This stuff is spouted, then it is repeated and it is halfway around the world before the truth has its boots on. No information on why you “could believe it” What people usually mean when they say this is, you want it to be true. Not sure why but I have my suspicions. Unlike you, when I am unsure of something like this, I won’t just spout it I will keep it to myself rather than influence someone else’s opinion needlessly.

I saw a tweet once that anyone who believed the moon landing was faked, had never been a project manager.

There are real scandals that get covered by and whistleblown. CIA experimenting with LSD on civilians, Iran Contra Arms, our current government massive fraud. But the key to them all is that there is always a clear benefit to somebody.

Except we have been back.

Not sure why you think it being on you tube is evidence of anything.

I could get on board with a theory that said they went to the moon but the footage was shite, or the camera didn’t work so they faked that bit of it, but there is far too much evidence to suggest the mission never took place.
