Do you have the heating on overnight?

It’s 9 c in the house at the moment. We haven’t got the heating on, do have a heated blanket and wool duvet.

Sometimes wonder if it would be nice to not have a cold nose…?

Yes we have it on 24 hours to 24 degrees if we aren't in the room we turn the rad off

But we have heating on all day

When it drops below 24 degrees the heating comes on

I have my radiator off in my room at night for comfort but the room is about 21 degrees then the radiator comes on if it drops below that

@fluffythedragonslayer

We have our thermostat on 10 overnight. We are really struggling financially at the moment so trying not to put the heating on much.
Why do you have it on at all overnight, though? You can’t be struggling financially if you put your heating on overnight. It’s incredibly wasteful and extravagant.
Westfacing · 05/12/2021 10:10

No, have never had the heating on at night but have never put up with 9C - your house must be poorly insulated, what time do you turn the heating off to reach such a low figure?

I've recently had a new boiler installed which came with a fancy Google Nest thermostat so I'm experimenting and checking temperatures often. Have it set for 21C from 07.00 for an hour then have it on/off as needed. I'm in a 2-bedroom flat, London, and the temperature never drops below 18C overnight (have the Nest app on my phone so have been checking during the night!)

10C is very cold, so at that temperature the heating is basically off.

Plantsandpuddlesuits · 05/12/2021 10:17

Oh no I can't stand hearing on overnight. We turn it off around 10 then it goes back on at 6. I prefer to sleep with the window open too! We have a down duvet so really warm!

maddiemookins16mum · 05/12/2021 10:19

Goodness no. We also have the window slightly open. MIL has a oil filled radiator in her bedroom though, set at 20c all night.

Oldraver · 05/12/2021 10:24

We have a programmable thermostat so technically the heating is in all the time but controlled by the stat

I set it to about 13/14 at night ( from about 10pm) and it has only ever kicked in at night once

I think if you're in a new house and the temp is dipping to 9 at night there is something wrong or your wood burner is warming the ground floor and overriding the CH .

We had this problem when we used the gas fire in the living room and the stat is in the hall

SprayedWithDettol · 05/12/2021 10:24

The thermostat is down at about 12 at night I think. I couldn’t sleep with the heating pumping at night. It would also be hugely wasteful as we sleep with the window open whatever the weather.
I am also a hot menopausal woman who has an internal thermonuclear reactor and only has a 4.5 tog duvet, which I normally throw off in the night and only use the sheet. DH copes well with my choices, poor bastard.

Oldraver · 05/12/2021 10:30

@Spray

I went through a stage of Waking up sweating in the night and used to waft the sheet, OH never moaned

I then discovered silk duvets

Glittertwins · 05/12/2021 11:05

Each room has its own Hive valve so it will heat that room if it drops below 16.5 to prevent damp and condensation. It's definitely helped the house to stay warm during the day as we used to struggle to get the house warm during the day if the heating was off at night.

ImFree2doasiwant · 05/12/2021 11:06

@daisypond I tend not to have the heating on all day even when wfh and sitting down all day. Recently though with the colder weather, I've found that if I don't have it on in the day, it takes all evening to get remotely conformable. It's an old draughty house and the temp drops very quickly when the heating goes off

I know everyone and every house is different but still amazed at the pp who has her heating at 24! I don't think mine has ever reached more than 19.5 (even when on all day)

80sMum · 05/12/2021 11:09

I don't think I have ever had the heating on overnight. We rarely use it during the day and evening, we just light the wood burner in the living room instead.
I mostly only put the central heating on when we have visitors, as people usually come underdressed expecting a warm house.

Longdistance · 05/12/2021 11:10

Our heating is on a timer. It switches off at 11pm and back in 6am. Switches off 9am when we’re at work/school and back on at 5pm when we all pretty much roll in.

TuftyMarmoset · 05/12/2021 11:12

New house as in a new build or just new to you? Your house shouldn’t be getting that cold if you’ve had the heating on during the day, I’d be looking into getting additional insulation and blocking up any draughts from doors/windows/chimneys etc.

NotMeekNotObedient · 05/12/2021 11:12

Brrrrrrr too cold for me.

bigbluebus · 05/12/2021 11:21

No. The only time we did was when we had an exceptionally cold spell years ago when it went to -18°C outside overnight.

We had no heating for 3 days due to power outages last weekend. It took 3 days of no heating for the bedrooms to get down to 7°c. Our heating usually goes off at 10pm and comes on at 6.30am. I doubt the temperature drops below 15/16 most nights.

JaninaDuszejko · 05/12/2021 12:36

So you live in a smallflat in the warmest part of the country. Can't you understand that e.g. an old detached house in the north of Scotland (where it rarely gets to 18C even in the summer) might require more heating than your flat?

Heatherjayne1972 · 05/12/2021 12:55

No way.
I can’t bear being too hot
Also I’m not made of money
Heating is set to 20 degrees and it’s never on in the morning.

I find being chilly makes my kids move quicker first thing
Win win

Sexnotgender · 05/12/2021 12:58

I have a hive system so have some rooms heated overnight.

The bedrooms are set to around 16. They drop to about 10/12 in the winter which isn’t ideal for young children.

LER83 · 05/12/2021 13:07

Our thermostat is set at 19 at the moment so heating will come on whenever it drops below that, day and night. That's comfortable for us. Will put it up to 20/21 in the evening when kids are having a bath/getting ready for bed, then turn it down again.

EdgeOfTheSky · 05/12/2021 13:10

No.

Don’t find it at all necessary. I have a great duvet.

Yes I can understand - why would I not?

I was explaining my situation and how cold I think 9C is.

The OP didn't say she was in the north of Scotland - and that wouldn't have made any difference to my posts, I was responding to her query as to whether people have their heating on overnight.

I'm well aware of geographical temperature differences and how those in old detached houses manage their energy.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 05/12/2021 14:02

We do.

It’s been down to -9C outside the last two nights here. Not what I’d call a really cold spell yet, but getting a bit chilly.

Our insurance company advises us to keep the heating on to reduce the chance of burst pipes once the temp outside is below -6C for 6+ hours.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 05/12/2021 14:07

@Gretaburley

We live rurally and have a log burner as our main source of heat, the living room is next to the bedroom so we leave the doors open all night, it’s never cold in our bedroom even though the log burner will go out sometime during the night. Our stone walls act like storage heaters. Our very end guest bedroom is always freezing in winter though unless someone is staying and then I set the electric radiator to stay on permanently.
My house has a similar layout but my bedroom is the one right at the end :-)
gersteddybears · 06/12/2021 15:46

Answer Yes.

Our house is open plan downstairs for a few rooms and the staircase is in the room too so the heat travels up stairs. It can be so cold in the morning like maybe 15 degrees (9 I cld not bare that at all). It wld take so long to get to a decent temperature and I'd be miserable coz I was so cold. So we decided only last couple of yrs, to set the heating to come on if the temperature went below 17 outside the normal 6am to 10pm time. Makes a massive difference and we didn't notice an increase to our bills.
