Do you have the heating on overnight?

It’s 9 c in the house at the moment. We haven’t got the heating on, do have a heated blanket and wool duvet.

Sometimes wonder if it would be nice to not have a cold nose…?

If it’s below about 5 outside I leave it on. I live in an old brick cottage with no wall insulation and the house loses heat really quickly. The gable that faces the prevailing wind picks up the cold so the bathroom and hallway are always freezing.

Dougieowner · 04/12/2021 22:36

9deg C indoors?
House must be very poorly insulated, draughty or just doesn't get warm during the day?

At ours the heating is set at 21deg C and goes off at 8:30pm but rooms retains the heat so even in the morning the downstairs is still at 18-19deg C (thermostat is set at 16deg C just in case but it never drops that low).
Bedrooms are also warm but rads are usually set very low as convection keeps them warm, in fact I don't like it too hot so leave my rad off).

Doesn't sound very nice in this day and age.

jerometheturnipking · 04/12/2021 22:37

9C?! Ours is never on overnight, but we live in a very well insulated new build flat. The coldest it’s ever been was 16C first thing in the morning during the beast from the east because we had the windows on the latch. Normally it naturally hovers around the 19/20 mark but we occasionally boost it to 21/22 if it’s particularly windy outside (we’re quite exposed and the wind cuts through at funny angles) or we have clothes taking longer to dry with it being colder outside. I’d like it cooler, really. I have to sleep with the window cracked all year round because of how stuffy it feels with them closed.

Bettybantz · 04/12/2021 22:37

No, I wake up feeling like I’ve got a hangover if I leave the heating on

MuguetRose · 04/12/2021 22:38

Mine goes off at 11pm. It's set at 6 degrees overnight but would never drop that low. It's normally dropped to 17 by the next morning having been off all night

AnnieSnap · 04/12/2021 22:38

I leave it on, so that if it drops below 18 or so, it comes on. I am asthmatic and very cold air is bad for my lungs.

WoodburnersRUs · 04/12/2021 22:39

I want as cold a bedroom as possible at night though central heating will kick in if it drops below 11 (I have turned this down to 9 just now through) and comes on at 6.30 to bring it up to 18 for getting up.

If the heating stays on at night I wake up feeling hungover/thirsty/headachey as well as generally sleeping poorly.

Itstheprinciple · 04/12/2021 22:42

Can't bear sleeping with heating on. It gives me a headache all the following day. Ours is switched off at night.

Kite22 · 04/12/2021 22:45

We never used to, but since having a new boiler 3 or 4 years ago, we can now set ours that it comes on if the temperature drops below 8 degrees.
It is much better.

PriamFarrl · 04/12/2021 22:47

My turns itself to 9° at night but the house generally stays at about 16°. The 9° is just in case of an emergency really.

InFiveMins · 04/12/2021 22:49

God no, the thought of having heating on overnight makes me feel sick - it would get way too hot in our bedroom. It kicks in around an hour before we wake up. I've never once felt cold in the night - I have some throws to chuck on the bed if it's particularly cold outside but feel no need to put the heating on.

It's set to kick in if it reaches 15 or so, but basically never gets that cold inside. Newbuild with good insulation.

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 04/12/2021 22:53

No, I hate the feeling of warm air, especially overnight and prefer to layer up with throws etc. However, as pp’s have mentioned, I don’t think my house has ever dropped to 9 degrees. We do have good cavity wall and loft insulation. Usually when I get up in the morning (this time of year) its about 13/14 degrees in the house. I might then give it a quick blast to bring it up a bit, but usually I only put the heating on in the evenings and my thermostat is set to around 19 degrees. Anymore and I find it too stuffy.

JeffThePilot · 04/12/2021 22:53

No, my thermostat is set for 12 overnight so hardly ever comes on, but I do have a heated blanket.

RagzReturnsRebooted · 04/12/2021 22:54

@TurnUpTurnip

No the couple of times I thought I turned it off and I didn’t I wake up feeling ill, I don’t use heated blankets either
Same. Also the boiler is below my bedroom and the noise bothers me. But I don't like the feeling of central heating on when I'm sleeping. I have the window open too! Our house is quite well insulated though and rarely drops below 12 degrees on the landing, would be warmer in the bedrooms. If we're up and about it's usually set to 14-18 depending on whether people are having baths or showers. 9 is fine if you're in bed, but too cold otherwise.
MissCreeAnt · 04/12/2021 22:54

That's what the thermostat is for. Ours is set to 14 downstairs so it gets down to about 12 in bedrooms. We are not frugal with heating, we have it up to 20 in the evenings.

RandomUsernameHere · 04/12/2021 22:56

No, ours comes on in the morning and afternoon/evening depending on which room but never on overnight. If it was 9 degrees I'd put it on more though, that sounds very cold!

Sharletonz · 04/12/2021 22:57

15 is too cold in my house, i couldn't cope with 9! I have it on at 21 all day then turn it down to 20 at night time.

dementedpixie · 04/12/2021 22:57

No, but then my house doesn't get down to 9⁰C. Think in the depths of winter it might drop to 12⁰C but not lower.

Mellowyellow222 · 04/12/2021 22:58

9 degrees is very cold.

I don’t really like central heating, I find it an uncomfortable heat. I would never have it on overnight, but my house is usually 14 - 15 degrees now in the morning. This is cold and my nose defiantly feels it!

I keep the house at about 17 during the day. That’s fine for me with a heated blanket on my knee while I work.

Firesidefox · 04/12/2021 23:00

Absolutely no way. I would hate that.

I have a (new this year!) electric blanket on my bed, and haven't yet put the double duvet on, so that's the next step.

I will also put on bed socks when it gets colder.

Our house is draughty and Victorian with gaps around all the old sash windows so it's not hot at the best of times, but the idea of heating on all night is gross to me!

GuckGuckDoose · 04/12/2021 23:00

Nine degrees is insanely cold for inside (and I say that as owner of big old Victorian house..)

We have ours set for 16-17 in day, 16 at night - argument being that by maintaining more constant temp, it takes less fuel to boost heat up all the way to a consistent temperature when it comes on in AM. we also have small children so I wouldn’t be comfortable with temp dropping so low for them.

coogee · 04/12/2021 23:01

Our heating would only fire up overnight if the inside temperature dropped below 7 degrees. Which it never does.

Youngatheart00 · 04/12/2021 23:02

Effective use of a thermostat here - 20 degrees during the day and 14 at night.

The house is pretty well insulated so it rarely kicks in overnight.
