Do you have the heating on overnight?

It’s 9 c in the house at the moment. We haven’t got the heating on, do have a heated blanket and wool duvet.

Sometimes wonder if it would be nice to not have a cold nose…?

Mine is set to come on about 4am, I often don't sleep well and if I wake up at 4 ish and it's cold somehow I can't get back to sleep.

It's just clicked off, it will come back on at about 4pm but I might switch it off as it's often too warm then.

I'm lucky my house is insulted to an inch of its life (if houses have lives) so seems to just hold the heat, the only place that is cold is the kitchen, until I start cooking.

In the summer I need air con to sleep.

MarshaBradyo · 05/12/2021 08:08

No only in the morning - at about 6am I think

Thissucksmonkeynuts · 05/12/2021 08:13

No, but it's set to come on at 14 to protect the house from burst pipes. I wouldn't risk letting a loved in house drop as low as 9, too much hassle. An empty house, maybe, if the water system was drained down.

SymbollocksInteractionism · 05/12/2021 08:14

No heating here overnight and I also have the window open. I'm usually toasty as DH is always boiling . when he's NS I sometimes put the electric blanket on.

All our family are used to a cold house and cant sleep if it is too hot. It's only DS1's girlfriend that gets really cold as she is used to the heating on.
Our heating comes on at around 6.30AM for us getting up.

Blupblup · 05/12/2021 08:18

I couldn't bear to have heating on overnight, we are programmed to sleep in colder temps. We have a very old house but have smart thermostats on all the radiators, I d set them to 5 degrees overnight which is the lowest you can go just so they never switch on. I've just checked the temp now and most rooms are at 12-13 degrees which is chilly and therefore ideal for me. Even during the day though I wouldn't set the temp above 18ish. 20 and above is unpleasantly warm for me.

ImFree2doasiwant · 05/12/2021 08:20

We don't, and have an old draughty cold house, but it doesn't get that cold at night at the moment. It's usually around 14 when i get up.

I've changed firewater quilts abd a blanket on top and ds2 came in stripped off this morning as he was too warm!

ImFree2doasiwant · 05/12/2021 08:21

for winter quilts

RubyTuesday70 · 05/12/2021 08:24

Never, makes me feel ill. I still have my Dyson fan going though DH gets a bit cranky if it blows over onto his side Grin but he's the one who insists on a 15 tog duvet that nearly kills me.

Even with the heating on full blast our house rarely goes above 20c, and it's usually around 15c when we get up.

MumUndone · 05/12/2021 08:37

Thermostat set at 18 in my 3 year old's room overnight.

Forion · 05/12/2021 08:43

We bank the stove up before bed and that keeps the sitting room warm overnight for the cats. The rest of the house is cold overnight, but we don't get cold because we have woollen blankets and hot water bottles. We clean and re lay the stove in the morning.

Mol1628 · 05/12/2021 08:58

Our heating is set at 19 or 20 during the day and then turn it down to 17 on a night. It doesn’t usually turn on till about 5 in the morning though the house keeps the heat fairly well.

Foreverlexicon · 05/12/2021 09:03

No.
No kids in the house and despite being freezing the rest of the time, I get hot when I sleep.

Radiators in the bedroom are switched off and windows open all year round so it’s positively artic when I get in there to go to bed. I love it

Roominmyhouse · 05/12/2021 09:05

No, I tried leaving the heating on overnight last year on a lower temperature but it just made it too hot and stuffy at night. Mind you my house is never as cold as 9c! Ours goes off at 10.30pm and comes back on about 7am. Currently set to 19c which is just about right for me.

SmellyOldOwls · 05/12/2021 09:09

9° is not normal, last year we moved out of our house while we were selling it and it sat unheated for weeks and never got that low.

peboh · 05/12/2021 09:09

I have it on a timer in dd's bedroom. So it comes on a couple of times through the night to stave off the chill, but doesn't stay on all night to the point where she'd be too warm.
Everywhere else no, I just have all our radiators (electric) set to timers where they come on around 5 or 6, depending on what dds sleep pattern has looked like that week.

GreenWhiteViolet · 05/12/2021 09:09

No. It goes off at 9.30 and comes back on at 6.30. I like to have a window slightly open too.

When I was little my mother used to leave it on all night and then complain that my siblings and I kicked off our blankets and duvets during the night. Because it was boiling!

daisypond · 05/12/2021 09:15

Did people really have the heating on all day in the daytime? Is it not really expensive? I’m at home all day and I just have heating on for half an hour in the morning when we get up and then an hour in the evening. It is set for about 18 degrees.

MLMshouldbeillegal · 05/12/2021 09:21

The thermostat drops to 13c overnight. The house is well-insulated and even in the middle of the winter it doesn't get cold enough for the heating to kick in overnight.

I cannot bear an overwarm bedroom, we sleep in a very warm loft room and use a summer duvet all year round. And we're in Scotland, not the Caribbean.

I only switch it on as and when it's not on a timer. Probably have it on less than that mostly. but there's no way ours would get up to anywhere near 18 degrees if i just have it on half an hour in morning and an hour in the evening
YokoOnosHat · 05/12/2021 09:24

Not unless it’s literally snowing and -5 or lower outside, which is rare where we live. Close internal doors, electric blanket on and wear a hoodie.

People seem to really struggle with the concept that other people's houses are different from theirs. We use to have the heating on only in the morning and the evening when we were home but now DH and I are WFH I actually have it set higher during the day when we are sitting at our desks than it's set in the morning and evening when we are moving about doing housework. I still sit at my desk in 2 jumpers with a blanket over my knees on the coldest days.

lollipoprainbow · 05/12/2021 09:31

No it makes me feel ill and headachey and stuffy if I leave it on!

fluffythedragonslayer · 05/12/2021 09:33

We have our thermostat on 10 overnight. We are really struggling financially at the moment so trying not to put the heating on much.

coogee · 05/12/2021 09:52

Indeed. Our boiler takes about half an hour to heat up from cold before any hot water makes its way to the house radiators. There would be no point in running it for such a short period.

peaceanddove · 05/12/2021 09:58

Our heating is set to automatically kick in if the temperature drops below 20 degrees. Our house is 200 years old so we need to be wary of damp etc.
