Do you have the heating on overnight?

It’s 9 c in the house at the moment. We haven’t got the heating on, do have a heated blanket and wool duvet.

Sometimes wonder if it would be nice to not have a cold nose…?

I like a cold bedroom and never have the heating on upstairs apart from the bathroom radiator. The heating downstairs goes off at 10 so the bedroom gains some heat. It can be v cold in the middle of the night as I have the window open but by then I am cosy under the duvet and if necessary with a blanket or hot water bottle.

ForgedInFire · 05/12/2021 00:02

Yes. Even if I didn't need it during the evening I turn it on before bed because thats when it's coldest and you are moving around the least. I can't bear waking up in the night from the cold or getting up to a cold house in the morning.

Bobsyer · 05/12/2021 00:12

No never. When it's really cold we do have the heating on till about 9pm and then it comes on about 5am, but when it's on overnight it gives me migraines. If it's really cold we use hot water bottles later on.

Bobsyer · 05/12/2021 00:14

@ForgedInFire that's so weird, I don't think I've ever woken in the night feeling cold. If I have, I've obviously just pulled a blanket over me and immediately forgotten!

I wonder if you run colder than me, or if it's really the temp in our homes that's so different?

Redglitter · 05/12/2021 00:17

I couldn't handle the heating on overnight.

But then I sleep with a summer duvet & my window open all year round

caringcarer · 05/12/2021 00:22

I feel ill if I keep it on overnight. My mouth and nose dry out and I struggle to breathe. I have it on 20 in day, them switch it off at about 10. Then go to bed about 11. DH switches it on at 7 am.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 05/12/2021 00:22

No, it goes off at 11 unless we bump it on again. We have an electric blanket on our bed and brushed cotton bed linen in winter.

Bloodybridget · 05/12/2021 01:34

We do keep the heating on overnight if it's very cold, with the thermostat turned down to 17, but I wouldn't have my bedroom rad on; the room would never get anywhere near as low as 9 degrees, though!

JaninaDuszejko · 05/12/2021 05:28

It'll depend on the house, if you are in a well insulated house and had the heating set to 22C overnight obviously it would feel stuffy. In an older badly insulated house having the heating on overnight can be essential.

In our current house we have the heating set very low overnight (10C) but it never gets this low, this morning it was 15.5C when I got up having been off since 10 pm. Our last house was an old detached house on a hill with no double glazing and no cavity walls (so no insulation) and the heaters were a bit shit. It would drop to the ambient outside temperature very quickly so we had the heating set to 17C overnight and the heating would be on all night just to maintain that at this time of year. When we went away the house took several days to warm up from the 'pipes don't freeze' 10C we'd set the heating at.

Gooseysgirl · 05/12/2021 06:53

Our thermostat very rarely goes below 14C so we don't have the heating on overnight. The house is reasonably well insulated though.

Derrymum123 · 05/12/2021 07:04

No. Love the room cool. Heating on all night gives me headaches next day.

Mittenmob · 05/12/2021 07:04

No, we have hot water bottles instead, and a toddler who doesn't have one but without fail comes to sleep on my head at about 2. I assume my head emits significant warmth.

MeanderingGently · 05/12/2021 07:07

No heating on at night. I have the windows open too, I can't sleep when it gets too warm but I live in a flat which retains too much heat.
Doesn't matter what the room temperature is at night, you will sleep well if you are warm under the duvet.

LuckyAmy1986 · 05/12/2021 07:09

We have ours on at 20 all the time, so if it drops below that then it automatically comes on in the night. DS is asthmatic and it's not good for him if it's too cold. I hate getting up to a cold house anyway.

GoodnightGrandma · 05/12/2021 07:14

Mine is off at night.

onlyhereforthefood · 05/12/2021 07:21

ours is set to kick in if it drops below 18c so it comes on when needed rather than set times

JaninaDuszejko · 05/12/2021 07:26

I wonder if you run colder than me, or if it's really the temp in our homes that's so different?

My teenage DDs share a room, it's the warmest room in the house and never gets cold. One sleeps in short pyjamas all year round and has a 4 tog duvet. The other has a 13 tog duvet and sleeps in cozy long pyjamas and her dressing gown all year round. People run very differently.

PieMistee · 05/12/2021 07:31

We have it off but goes on at 6am so warmish by 6:30am. Money and environmental reasons. I do have a lovely warm duvet and husband though.

DinosApple · 05/12/2021 07:31

Ours is off at night and it gets to single figures upstairs in the winter. Our heating comes on twice, first thing and early evening.

We all have teddy bear fleece duvets and electric blankets.

I feel ill if my face is hot. We do have the windows shut in winter, but open as soon as it warms up.

Gretaburley · 05/12/2021 07:32

We live rurally and have a log burner as our main source of heat, the living room is next to the bedroom so we leave the doors open all night, it’s never cold in our bedroom even though the log burner will go out sometime during the night. Our stone walls act like storage heaters.
Our very end guest bedroom is always freezing in winter though unless someone is staying and then I set the electric radiator to stay on permanently.

UseOfWeapons · 05/12/2021 07:35

No, mine is set so that it comes on at any time the temperature falls below14C, comes on at 5.15am, goes off at 6.20a, comes on again at 4pm, goes off at 710pm. It’s an old Victorian house, with high ceilings, but I’m toasty in the evenings when I want to relax and flop. I also have a beautiful thick duvet, and and an electric over blanket, which means the bed is nice and warm to get into, but the room is cool.

gofg · 05/12/2021 07:40

I live in NZ where central heating isn't a thing really. When I go to bed the heater is turned off, and I have my bedroom window open all night. I hate a stuffy bedroom.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 05/12/2021 07:54

I get too hot if the hearing gets left on.

EventOfTheSeason · 05/12/2021 08:03

Yes, but the thermostat is turned down to 7°c and only because we're worried about the pipes. It's warm upstairs in our house compared to the cold downstairs. I don't think the heating has come on yet at night though.

Simonjt · 05/12/2021 08:04

The thermostat is set to 15 at night, although it rarely clicks on.
