What is your absolute favourite hot chocolate to make at home and with no specialist equipment (I.e. velvetiser)?

Want to get a lovely one to have with amaretto at the weekend

Interested in this too. I am a bit shite at making hot choc.

Bontanics · 29/11/2021 18:57

100g of your fave chocolate bar. Break up into pieces and add 2 cups of milk to a saucepan and warm through on a gentle heat stirring occasionally. Add a pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg or chilli powder for fancy.

Choc and milk in microwave.

Powdered i would say cadburys

We've tried loads. Our fav at the moment is lindt followed by Costa. Nothing too pricy as the dds drink loads of it.

Had never thought of using actual chocolate - will give it a go. Also interested in powdered suggestions.

Cadburys

Thesearmsofmine · 29/11/2021 19:33

Whittards is my favourite, Sainsburys powder is also nice.

ISpyCobraKai · 29/11/2021 19:34

Twinings.

Bellafrenum · 29/11/2021 19:34

I always get Cadburys and its fine but surely there is a better one? Maybe a luxury grated chocolate kind. Considering trying the hotel chocolat ones but in a saucepan...

Ha - second thread on this topic - I make stirrers from melted chocolate mixed with cocoa.

Fink · 29/11/2021 19:44

I think it depends a lot on individual preference: I love Options and my dad loves Sainsbury's, but I can't stand his and he hates mine.

Of the café ones, I like Paul and Gail's. I'm not sure if Gail's sell for home delivery but Paul do.

nottoplan · 29/11/2021 19:49

Marimba chocolate drinking flakes are our favourite and will mix with milk in a saucepan and stir over gentle heat
Alternatives are hotel chocolate or Cocoba or Chococo who all do pure chocolate flakes and can be made as above

Frankola · 29/11/2021 19:51

Aldi have a lovely Special one. Much more chocolatey than Cadburys

Wombat69 · 29/11/2021 19:53

Costco cocao dissolved in hot milk. Not sweet tho.

Whittards Christmas hot chocolate, hands down. Only sold at this time of year so I stuck up with an embarrassing amount to see me through til it’s restocked next year.

autousername · 29/11/2021 20:00

options hot chocolate every time Brew

friedeggandsauce · 29/11/2021 20:03

Clipper!!

reluctantbrit · 29/11/2021 20:03

Normally I would say San Cristobal Hot Chocolate but it seems out of stock everywhere.

M&S is also nice or Green and Blacks but you need a lot of the latter to get the same taste.

I tried Sloanes but I find the beans only disolve if the milk is nearly boiling and then the taste changes too much. Same with the chocolate stirer thingies.

saywhatwhatnow · 29/11/2021 20:03

Hotel chocolat hands down!

Clementine8 · 29/11/2021 20:07

Charbonnel et walker, nothing beats it. Its expensive tho so my close 2nd is cadburys or make it with aldi chocolate buttons.

PinkCosYouAreSoVery · 29/11/2021 20:09

Green & Blacks for sure (if you don't like it sickly sweet) - sooooooo good! I have it with squirty cream and marshmallows and the contrast between the super sweet from the marshmallows and the less sweet chocolate is great!

secondaries · 29/11/2021 20:10

Twinings Swiss hot chocolate

Charbonnel et Walker
