Which "old" movies to watch?

Inspired by the thread on here where people were posting pics of hot "older" actors like Paul Newman, Marlon Brando, Robert Redford...made me realise how I know of these actors but have never watched any of there movies. What's on your must watch list? Planning on hibernating over Xmas:)

Newman & Redford starred together in Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid. Highly recommended.

BBC iPlayer currently has:
All the President's Men
Top Hat
Bringing Up Baby
Citizen Kane
Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House
The Third Man
A whole host of lesser / crap black and white movies
And Witness which I wouldn't classify as properly old but does star Harrison Ford at his absolute peak of hotness.

greenleathertrousers · 27/11/2021 23:26

Casablanca
East of Eden
Hud

EvilRingahBitch · 27/11/2021 23:27

Oh and Suspicion.

elephantoverthehill · 27/11/2021 23:27

I tried to find 'Harvey' tonight, no luck. James Stewart in a whimsical role. I would like to see it again, I first watched it many, many years ago.

greenleathertrousers · 27/11/2021 23:28

Great suggestions on here

redfairy · 27/11/2021 23:31

Can't beat Doris Day in my book. I love 'By the Light of the Silvery Moon'
For a weepie try Waterloo Bridge with Vivien Leigh

colourmebladd · 27/11/2021 23:33

The Sting
Paper Moon

greenleathertrousers · 27/11/2021 23:37

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 27/11/2021 23:38

Omg, if you want an old film to watch over Christmas, you MUST watch It's A Wonderful Life. You must. I insist.

greenleathertrousers · 28/11/2021 00:01

Greebolsm _ it's on at many cinemas this year which i am very excited about

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 28/11/2021 00:22

DH and I have watched it in the cinema together every year since we met, it's our Christmas tradition. We go to a posh cinema where they serve cheese and wine and snuggle up on a sofa.

Last year was the first year we couldn't do it. Already have our tickets for this year, just hoping it stills goes ahead!

bonfireheart · 28/11/2021 00:27

@greeboIsMySpiritAnimal that sounds like such a lovely way to spend Christmas!

Yes agree, @greebols and @bonfire, sounds wonderful. I am going to watch it at the cinema for the first time this year with our x3 teenage children!

Davros · 28/11/2021 00:34

Do you watch TalkingPics TV? It's brilliant, lots of good old films and many obscure ones. I have bookmarks for many old film stars, my TiVo box is full of old films. My all time favourite is Sullivan's Travels, closely followed by the original The Women

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 28/11/2021 00:41

I love the old Hammer Horror films, with Christopher Lee. Some of them are so-bad-it's-good but what's refreshing is the straightforwardness - no trying to be clever or ironic as in modern horror films.

DialSquare · 28/11/2021 00:46

The Yellow Rolls Royce. Your heart will break for Alain Delon.

DogFacedWoman · 28/11/2021 00:59

Absolutely anything with Steve McQueen in it. Or just look at a picture of him for an hour or 2 🥰

The Man Who Never Was - Operation Mincemeat is the upcoming remake starring Jason Isaac and Colin Firth - based on a true story

I Was Monty's Double - also based on a true story

All About Eve - older actress usurped by younger model

Arsenic & Old Lace - Insanity doesn't just run in my family, it positively gallops

The Philadelphia Story - this was the basis for High Society

An American In Paris - Gene Kelly, Leslie Caron and George Gershwin

Not black and white but Singing in the Rain - watched this a couple of years ago as a Sunday matinee in a cinema - lovely soundtrack.

Shane

Carmen Jones - a modern, all black, adaptation of Carmen starring Harry Belafonte

12 Angry Men - Jack Klugman (Quincy M.E.), Henry Fonda and Ed Begley directed by Sidney Lumey

Lawrence of Arabia

To Sir, With Love

Cool Hand Luke - Paul Newman - What we have here is a failure to communicate.
