Which "old" movies to watch?

bonfireheart · 27/11/2021 23:06

Inspired by the thread on here where people were posting pics of hot "older" actors like Paul Newman, Marlon Brando, Robert Redford...made me realise how I know of these actors but have never watched any of there movies. What's on your must watch list? Planning on hibernating over Xmas:)

@elephantoverthehill

I tried to find 'Harvey' tonight, no luck. James Stewart in a whimsical role. I would like to see it again, I first watched it many, many years ago.
You can buy or rent it on YouTube @elephantoverthehill

‘Whatever happened to Baby Jane’ with Bette Davis and Joan Crawford not Christmassy at all, quite dark but great film!

On The Town - another nice performance from Gene Kelly (and Frank Sinatra, if you like that sort of thing) and it's on the iplayer for the next couple of weeks.

@greenleathertrousers

Yes agree, *@greebols and @bonfire*, sounds wonderful. I am going to watch it at the cinema for the first time this year with our x3 teenage children!

Aww, enjoy it! Have your kids seen it yet? I've been wondering if my two are old enough to appreciate it yet, but I suspect they'd talk through it and ruin it for me.

Yusanaim · 28/11/2021 07:15

I watched Psycho recently by Alfred Hitchcock - although I thought I knew the story it was still a good watch.
Rear window is another.

rifling · 28/11/2021 07:19

On all these threads someone always suggests The Bishop's Wife so I thought I would get in first!

DinosApple · 28/11/2021 07:26

For Christmas tradition, and admiring the 1960s special effects, Jason and the Argonauts. A fantastic film.

Plus any MR James ghost stories that have been televised. Mark Gatiss has adapted another for (BBC) television this year. It will probably be on Christmas Eve.

I have watched White Christmas several times; it's on tv most years! So cheesy, but such fun.

Singing in the rain is joyous

DinosApple · 28/11/2021 07:34

Oh I love Arsenic and Old Lace, I'd forgotten.
Yesterday White Christmas was on with Bing Crosby. I realised I'd never seen it. DH couldn't stick it though.
Kids movies, Bed knobs and Broomsticks is an old favourite.

Another ghost film is the Ghost Train (1941) which was based on a play written by Arnold Ridley (Godfrey from Dad's Army).
It came on one Christmas Eve and I watched it with my dad and enjoyed it. Part comedy, part spooky, starring Arthur Askey.

The Yellow Rolls Royce. Your heart will break for Alain Delon.
Oh God I 💕 love, love that film. I must look for it online, it's ages since I saw it. Thank you for mentioning it.

Midnight (1939) with claudette colbert. Nobody every recommends this one - best comedy ever. Try it if you find it.

The Women (1939) all woman cast - dated, but 100 times better than that awful remake with meg ryan. Worth seeing just for wonderful adrian’s gowns.

Christmas in Connecticut with Barbara stanwyck. Perfect in every way
