How many washes do you get?

I’ve just killed another washing machine (always bearings) apparently I just use it too much. I do 16 full loads a week and get almost 2 years so say approx 1600 washes. Apparently this is unreasonable bordering commercial Hmm

I’m not after a debate about rewearing pants, just tell me please how many washes do you reckon you get from a machine?

I am not judging more than marvelling at how much time all that washing/drying/hanging/ironing must take!

Feel free, I’m judging myself Grin I’m pretty nippy at sorting, shaking and hanging it to dry- must be all the practice! Most doesn’t get ironed.

I have a Miele, do about 6 loads a week. 4 years in, going fine so far

NovemberNovemberDarkNights · 19/11/2021 22:00

@Nearlyadoctor

I’ve had my Miele 19 years and my father/step mother had it for 7 years prior to that. I’ve washed horse numnahs, dog beds etc over the years. DH works on a farm so farm overalls etc every week , plus probably 7-8 normal loads a week and it’s still going strong. If I can afford it I won’t even contemplate another brand when the time comes.
Trouble is, they don't even make Miele like they used to!

@lljkk

We wash everything at 30 in (usually colour) bio powder, and towels only after they are quite often used so not often at all I'm pleased if the teen boys get in the shower at all. I won't horrify readers with how rarely we wash bedding or tea towels.

The "energy efficient low water" 7kg machine doesn't get things clean if more than half full -- what kind of genius came up with that design flaw? We do maybe 5 loads/week for 4 people, all adult size, some sporty.

I'm not sure about bio washing powders or liquids. Don't they mess with the run-off water? In our water supplies, like the excretion of hormone medicines can?

Greenrubber · 19/11/2021 22:09

I do anything from 1 to 4 loads a day but I have a very sicky baby and use reusable wipes

I bought the cheapest washing machine I could find and it's lasted 2 and a half years so far no problems with it

Machines are not built to last now

My tumble dryer which also gets hammered is 5 years old and so far I've only had to replace a belt which I did myself

I hate how much washing I do it can't be good

But I can't leave shitty wipes, sweaty gym gear and wet towels to sit around or do another day

SpiderinaWingMirror · 19/11/2021 22:10

I new spend more that 300 ish and reckon 5 years til I order a new one. Before is my current favourite.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 19/11/2021 22:11

Beko

DickMabutt73962 · 19/11/2021 22:16

@DobbyTheHouseElk

I’m in my 4th load of the day. How can people only do 4 a week?? I’ve got a 9kg drum as well.
Don't separate clothes. Don't own 'whites'.

Sweaty gym gear... I exercise clean, so yes, I sweat, but if I then hang my kit up to air dry , I can wear it a couple of times before I need to wash it (we're taking Pilates, here! 😂). Gym kit smells if you leave it screwed up in a gym-bag; you exercise 'not clean', or you carry on wearing that kit after sweating so the microbes can start to get to work on making you smell.

That's how BO works. 😂

Fordian · 19/11/2021 22:19

And 'wet towels' shouldn't 'sit around'! Hang them to air! (And dry...)

DonGray · 19/11/2021 22:22

We do about 15 loads a week - I got 15 years out of the last Bosch with maybe 2-3 brush replacements

ivegotamillionkids · 19/11/2021 22:22

Good grief! We have a Bosch (older model) and it's on approx year 12. Gets used around 10 times a week. Perhaps they don't make 'em like they used to!

ginislife · 19/11/2021 22:22

I got 20 years out of a Miele. Had my mums AEG when we emptied their house and I'm now back to a Miele which is maybe 4 years old. 3 or 4 loads a week most weeks

SplodgeWaddler · 19/11/2021 22:28

I always buy Bosch, the one with the large drum. Currently I do up to 7 full washes a week plus at least 4 wool/delicate washes. My last one managed about 8 years (but with some fixing by my ex towards the end) and the current one is around 7 years old. Two years isn’t long at all.

daisyjgrey · 19/11/2021 22:36

I've had two washing machines in 15 years, the first was second hand.

Greenrubber · 19/11/2021 22:38

@Fordian

It's my husbands gym gear and it's ringing wet by the time he's finished a session he does tend to reuse his bottoms but his tops need a wash

Also sometime he puts his wet t-shirt and vest straight into the laundry basket and it sits there all night 😞 then his damp towel ontop of that 🤦‍♀️

Personally I have hardly any washing of my own 😁

The baby is the worst at least 2 massive blow outs a day and chucks up a fair bit

MyMagicStars · 20/11/2021 00:35

At one point when I had eight kids living at home (including toddler twins) we must have been at 25 loads a week… whoever was sorting out DD3 in the night would stick another load in. Now there are only 3 of us at home I probably wash about 4 loads a week.

lljkk · 20/11/2021 06:50

I can't quickly find an environmental impact statement.
The enzymes are biologically interactive so they will breakdown fairly quickly they are not chemicals like hormones. The key env. benefit of biological detergents is that they are effective cleaners at relatively lower temps optimised for 32 degrees IIRC.

Most Non-bio detergs still contain phosphate, sufacents, perfumes, etc. Soapnuts didn't work for us & Ecover is kind of expensive...

maddiemookins16mum · 20/11/2021 07:50

6 loads a week max. Our Hotpoint is 9 years old.

DonGray · 20/11/2021 09:39

If you overload the machine it may wear out quicker

noblegreenk · 20/11/2021 09:44

I'd say we do about 4 on an average week. Some weeks we may do up to 6 loads.

tootiredtospeak · 20/11/2021 09:46

There are 5 of is 3 adults 2 kids and I dont think we are far off that at least 1 a day sometimes 2 so maybe around 12. Mine usually last ok at least 3 to 5 years always bought fairly cheap ones around 300 pounds.

KosherDill · 20/11/2021 10:02

My washer is 24 years old. One repair in that time. 4 - 6 loads per week.

LinuxPenguinPCnerd · 20/11/2021 10:17

2-3 loads a week and mine is 12

SleepyMathematician · 20/11/2021 10:41

I’ve managed to get nearly 5 years so far out of my LG. It wasn’t cheap though. It has a direct drive motor apparently guaranteed for 10 years so no bearings. Whether they’d guarantee it with the amount of washing I do I’ve no idea!
We are a family of 5 adults, all doing our washing independently, so often 3 or more washloads a day. It’s nothing for it do do washloads back to back from dawn till dusk at the weekends. Every machine in the past has lasted 2 years max, for the same reasons as you, the bearings have gone.
It might be worth looking at the LG.
