How many washes do you get?

I’ve just killed another washing machine (always bearings) apparently I just use it too much. I do 16 full loads a week and get almost 2 years so say approx 1600 washes. Apparently this is unreasonable bordering commercial Hmm

I’m not after a debate about rewearing pants, just tell me please how many washes do you reckon you get from a machine?

@Runnerduck34

Can't believe some families of 4/5 get away with so little washing!! To answer PPs family of 6 all DC teenagers/ early twenties so big bulky clothing oversize hoodies etc, work clothes ( working with animals / building) sports clothes so minimum of 1 load each of dark and whites. Plus towels- bath sheets take up a lot of room, Bedding, mainly double beds and can't get more than 1 set in the machine at a time. Easily 2-3 loads a day! OP, buy a Miele, they are about 1k so not too much more than your bosch and they will last for 10 years+ and usually come with a 5 year Guarantee.
We get multiple wears out of clothes except underwear. I stagger the bedding and towels go in the wash once a week
TheOrigRights · 19/11/2021 18:37

I am 51 and on my second washing machine. Current one is a few years old.
In that period of time my machine has been used for 2 then 3 then 4 people and is currently for 2.
I tend to bung everything in on 40C

MargosKaftan · 19/11/2021 18:38

We do 1 or 2 washes a day. My dcs both rarely have their clothes clean enough for a 2nd wear after each wear, hoping that changes as they get older. Towels and bedding gets washed weekly, but that's 3 loads in total.

2 of those wash loads weekly are sports kits though so not everyone does that much.

Our last machine lasted 8 years.

Exhausteddog · 19/11/2021 18:40

I do 3-4 loads a week for 4 people (2 adults, DD15 and DS 12) , but used to do more than that when kids were younger. My washing machine is at least 13 years old .

TheOrigRights · 19/11/2021 18:41

@DobbyTheHouseElk

I’m in my 4th load of the day. How can people only do 4 a week?? I’ve got a 9kg drum as well.
Smaller families? Washing less frequently? Not having lots of changes? I do a lot of sport but at this time of year I can wear running legging and tops a couple of times as I don't sweat outside. DS is 12, unless he's got muddy he only needs clean pants, socks and shirt each day for school.

4th load of the day??? Have you managed to do anything else?
Topbird29 · 19/11/2021 18:41

We have a miele, and family of 4. Average 7 loads a week. Have had the machine for about 15 years, try not to overload, and had the drum belt replaced once.
1 x School uniform shirts / whites
3 other clothes loads
2 x towels
Bedding- 2 loads every other week.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 19/11/2021 18:42

I do 10 loads a week. My Maytag is 15 years old and has only been repaired once.

Topbird29 · 19/11/2021 18:43

And we don't wash clothes after 1 wear (apart from pants and socks).

Nidan2Sandan · 19/11/2021 18:44

Towels are heavy. When I had a machine bearings go I was told not to wash towels on their own because of their wet weight and to just spread them among your normal washing.

Since doing that I havent had a machine have its bearings go so I think there has to be something to that advice Grin

That's almost like running a B&B! More double beds than most, bath sheets rather than bath towels. I did lots more when now adult DS was at home, but I think we are in a sweet spot before DS2 gets all stinky!
Nidan2Sandan · 19/11/2021 18:45

We're a family of 5 and average maybe 5-6 loads a week.

furbabymama87 · 19/11/2021 18:47

I do about 2 loads a day. 4 kids, 2 adults. Washing machines last me about 2 years but the last one I've got I've insured and not needed it fixed yet.

BurbageBrook · 19/11/2021 18:47

That amount of washing is insane. I do 2 loads a week (2 of us).

purplesequins · 19/11/2021 18:47

16 Shock

4-5 loads a week here and our washer is 7 years old and so far has not once made a funny noise.

WhatsWrongWithMyUsername · 19/11/2021 18:50

8-10 washes a week. Loads of sports kits needing a quick turnaround. When I slack off and go a couple of days without doing any washing the laundry basket reaches crisis point.

I’ve not worn a washing machine out yet. First one was about 15 years old when I moved out (but I was single for the majority of that time). Next house was new and it was hanging on in there when we moved out after 8 years.

Hercisback · 19/11/2021 18:52

16 loads a week.... How do you dry it all?

Scotabroad24 · 19/11/2021 18:56

I probably do about 12 loads a week.
Had my last Samsung eco bubble washer for about 5 years and it was still working perfectly, had to leave it in rented flat but have a new one in our new house and no problems at all.

Sounds completely sensible but if you was clothes at 30/40 and towels at 60 it doesn’t match up. Not sure why I do towels at 60 though, presumably hygiene reasons?

Mine are technically half loads in that I 1/2 to 2/3 fill a 9kg machine and run the 1hr half load cycle (full load cycle is 3hrs ffs).

Genuine non judgey question- how on earth do people manage to do a family’s washing in 4 runs a week? Do you mix bedding, towels and clothes in 9kg full loads?

Still can’t find the bearings anywhere, torn between a cheapie and an investment Miele. I had a Miele hoover years ago which died under guarantee and they said I killed that because I used the hose attachment too much causing the bottom but to overheat and warp. Used the hose to hoover the beams etc not do the whole flipping house. DH was not impressed with them.

6 loads a week (6 of us) lasts about 5 years. I only buy £250 max machines now so the pain is easier to bear when they break

IncessantNameChanger · 19/11/2021 19:04

In answer to your question nearly everything goes on 40 degree synthetic wash.

Rarely things go on at 60. I know they should but meh. I cant store things up for a 60 wash

Mynameismargot · 19/11/2021 19:05

Would you not just get a cheap washing machine with an extended warranty? I'm in Ireland but I presume curry's in the UK do the same as they do here. We paid 60quid extra and they come out and fix it for free even if it is your own fault it is broken for 5 years. We had a repairman out 3 times on our last machine. Twice it was my fault it broke.

Steelesauce · 19/11/2021 19:06

Mine last around 2 years. Me and 3 young kids. We average 1-2 loads a day but I often skip days and do 3-4 in a day instead. I don't understand how people with kids wash so little? Sports kit, school uniforms, swimming stuff for one, then the spillages! Tea towels and cloths are forever being used to soak up spillages Grin

SockFluffInTheBath · 19/11/2021 19:06

Mostly outside, towels in the dryer to make them fluffy.
