As she has apparently sprained her back.

I do wish the Palace would be honest about her health (without giving details) rather than setting her up to attend events that they know she won't be at. It can't be good for her, they should just say she's out for a while, which at her age would be completely understandable.

@peridito

Can people die of osteoporosis ? I can imagine that the broken bones that it can lead to might be difficult to recover from if you're 85+++ ,but dying of osteoporosis at 72 sounds unlikely to me .
Yes I was surprised, but it’s how Camilla words it (and I’m not a dr so what do I know!)

Roussette · 15/11/2021 17:06

My Granny died of osteoporosis but we're talking a very long time ago... she died in the late 60s, I'm sure treatments are different now

Hospedia · 15/11/2021 17:13

Osteoporosis really can be fatal as there is only so much stress the human body can take, fractures and breaks as well as the treatment (e.g., hip surgery) also carry risks and complications such as infection, heart attack, stroke, etc where the osteoporosis has been a majorly contributing factor.

Malibuismysecrethome · 15/11/2021 17:49

Osteoporosis is really misunderstood it is debilitating and the slightest thing, even coughing can cause fractures. It must be one of the most painful conditions you can suffer from. It’s frightening to think people think you can’t die from it, you can and you will be in agony as well.

Hospedia · 15/11/2021 18:12

Imagine sneezing and breaking a rib or a vertebrae.

Malibuismysecrethome · 15/11/2021 19:11

Hospedia yes, horrendous for anyone who has it

Yes. Look up elderly dying after a hip fracture as an example.
RubyTuesday70 · 15/11/2021 22:07

Could be that she had a fall (which would explain the overnight stay) and she needs a hip replacement? At 95, her risks of going under a GA would be significant, and she may have made the decision to manage with pain relief instead.

She can still manage virtual appointments, and video messages but perhaps just won't appear in public again. Her COP26 speech was filmed quite close up and didn't show her hips/legs.

eddiemairswife · 15/11/2021 23:08

The Queen Mother was 95 when she had a hip replacement.

EdithWeston · 15/11/2021 23:42

Could be that she had a fall (which would explain the overnight stay)

Could be, in that case would the official description of the reason for her stay be 'preliminary investigations'?

If it was orthopaedic, wouldn't they have said something less vague - after all she'd been seen using a stick for the first time only just beforehand, so she could have been in for 'assessment of recent orthopaedic issues' and still ordered to rest etc.

I mean it's her call about how much detail to put out there, and preliminary investigations could mean preliminary orthopaedic ones. But the wide and non-specific language that they chose to use does leave an awful lot of options open.

(I have a couple of pet theories, one of which really wouid make sense of all angles both official and the likes of Private Eye, but I don't want to speculate further in print)

peridito · 16/11/2021 06:41

Sorry guys ,I didn't want to frighten anyone .I remain unconvinced that it's likely that a 72 year old would die from osteoporosis .I wonder if there is some confusion with osteomyelitis ?

No it’s definitely osteoporosis. Camilla is the patron of the osteoporosis charity. She’s spoken about it before.
Malibuismysecrethome · 16/11/2021 07:57

perdito why do you remain unconvinced that someone would die aged 72 from osteoporosis
It’s not that difficult to understand. .

Peaseblossum22 · 16/11/2021 08:03

Camilla has been involved with the osteoporosis society for many years , she does a lot of work with them behind the scenes as well as the high profile stuff. She definitely u it s not confused

Ooh.. come on, you can’t leave us guessing!
Hospedia · 16/11/2021 08:14

Do tell that to the families of people who have died of osteoporosis.

peridito · 16/11/2021 09:00

I hear you all but we'll have to disagree . Though possibly there is some middle ground indicated by my use of the word "likely".

And it's not Camilla that I think might be confusing osteoporosis with osteomyelitis.

Malibuismysecrethome · 16/11/2021 09:04

You don’t understand that you can die from a fracture or complications from multiple fractures or the stress on the body from having multiple fractures?

peridito · 16/11/2021 09:31

My mother died following ( not of ) a fracture when she was 92 .She died in hospital with the cause of death given as heart failure .Osteoporosis ,which she had ,was not mentioned .

Prior to this she had a stress fracture of her neck of femur which resulted in a hip operation .She was 85 at the time and had osteoporosis which caused the stress fracture .

I strongly suspect that her death at 92 was the result of a number of factors ,not least congestive heart failure and us having to wait 6 hours for an ambulance .I wouldn't describe it as dying of osteoporosis. But I am pedantic .

peridito · 16/11/2021 09:58

Should add that this was 6 years ago .Condolences not appropriate .My mum was waiting to go and this was relatively quick . The 6 hours on the floor she was in and out of consciousness.
The ambulance service said they'd only been told she'd fallen ,then they were diverted .. much too long though .

BiLuminous · 16/11/2021 10:22

Why do people add their one singular experience and base their judgement for everyone else off of that?

peridito · 16/11/2021 11:06

Gosh ,who knows ?
Maybe it's to indicate my experience and interest in the condition .
Maybe it's because it's a real fact ,an actual example that illustrates a general truth .
Maybe it's to illustrate something -many live with osteoporosis beyond their early 70s.
As opposed to a generic all encompassing statement .

People may die in their 70s with osteoporosis, but I don't think it's likely that they die of it . I use the word likely( not impossible you'll note ) because I don't think it's common ,usual or to be expected .

BiLuminous · 16/11/2021 11:12

There's literally billions of people in the world with bodies that all don't work in the exact same way yet even with this wild variation people say 'this happened to my gran so must be what's happened to you'

Ok then

Laiste · 16/11/2021 11:13

So meanwhile there's still no announcement so we can assume the Queen didn't die over the weekend. Even the longest estimate here on a news ban was 48 hours i think.

Good.

I wonder how she is?

diddl · 16/11/2021 11:46

Just read that Charles has flown to Jordan & Egypt for four days so perhaps that's an indication that things aren't serious?

Although I'm sure he could be back quickly so maybe it's not an indication of anything!
