I don’t think I’ve really processed it yet. DH slipped down the stairs carrying DS and I saw him land on his head.

DS is only 4 months old. He’s had a scan on his head and has two fractures and lots of swelling. They don’t think he has brain damage. We’re staying in the children’s hospital overnight for observation. They have to wake him up every hour. I’m so scared, I don’t think I’ve left fight or flight mode yet.

If this happened to any of you how was the recovery?

My DH fell off a top bunk at that age and I still don’t think his DM has quite recovered
At 4 months? Sounds unlikely.

OP, hope you are reassured and that your son makes a swift recovery.

Rachie1973 · 07/11/2021 00:29

So sorry this has happened OP! What an awful shock for your whole family.

I’ve had 6 kids and you wouldn’t believe the bumps, bruises and breaks we’ve had. Children are so resilient and early signs seem positive.

Take care of yourself as well, it’s so emotionally draining that you can forget a bit of self care. I imagine your poor DH feels awful too right now. Hugs for him as well,

Just think when your baby gets married your DH can tell the story of how his dad dropped him on his head as a baby! Xxx

LifeIsTricky · 07/11/2021 00:32

When I was 2, my sister tried to pick me up at the top of the stairs, we both went flying down them. I had a small fracture to my skull, fully broke my leg and collarbone was cracked too and she broke ribs and her leg, as we both went over the bloody safety gate didn't we and hit the stair lift that was meant to be removed but wasn't on the way down. My Mam (single parent) was besides herself. Thought SS would remove us etc. Nothing of the sort happened. We both healed well, we had side by side beds in hospital, and we learnt to be more careful.
Accidents happen OP. They're awful, but they happen. Your DH must feel dreadful right now, but it was just an accident. You sound really supportive of him which is good.
Any worries, talk to the nurses, they're used to this I promise you. They're there all night and you won't be bothering them.

I was dropped and had a skull fracture as a baby. I'm now 42 and a solicitor. Try not to panic Thanks

SleepingStandingUp · 07/11/2021 00:48

Didn't even cross my mind to think 'I hope I get a bed instead of a chair'. more fool you. Every little bit of sleep @LightsS0bright manages tonight means a little bit more information will go in when the Dr's talk to her and the more she can be there for poor DS and DH tomorrow. Same for DH too back at her. Ive done my time trying to sleep on those bloody chairs with every kids monitors beeping a hellish cacophony of noise. The experience should make you more empathetic not less to someone going through the same.

No similar experience but enough time in a bedside chair / bed to send you lots of love Light

I fractured mine as a child. Trapped my finger in a fire door, went light headed, fainted, fell back through a glass wall, hit my head on the concrete it was set in, fractured my skull and then had a fit due to head trauma
Mum had gone to open the window as I felt faint, came back to find me on the floor and my dad frozen with his toast halfway to his mouth

No wonder my mum has grey hair BlushThanks

KloppsTeeth · 07/11/2021 01:11

@LightsS0bright My brother was dropped in accident when he was 15 weeks old. Fractured his skull and a few other bones. He was absolutely fine, did exceedingly well at school, even went to Cambridge University, now works for Apple. You would never know the shock and fear my parents had at the time.
Hope you are all home together soon Flowers

IndecentCakes · 07/11/2021 02:38

My goodness, Cordeliathecat. I am so glad to hear your daughter survived unscathed.

Praying for you and your baby, OP. Let's hope all will be well.

LaurenKelsey · 07/11/2021 02:54

I hope it eases your burden (and your DH’s) to read all the stories of similar accidents without long-term consequences, OP. Hopefully the next few days will bring relief in the form of good news from the hospital.

LightsS0bright · 07/11/2021 04:09

We’re on a ward that’s been fairly quiet, DS has been having a good sleep. I managed to get maybe an hour and a half. I need to go back to sleep really.

I can’t wait to be back home.

Rather miraculously he’s been able to sleep through nurses shining a light in his eyes

a friend tripped carrying her 3 month old son.
His skull was fractured, but babies bones mend well and he is a perfectly healthy , typically stroppy teen boy of 14 now.

Hope you have a good night and great news tomorrow

Cissyandflora · 07/11/2021 04:55

I’m soo sorry for the three of you. How awful but so good that you are with baby and that he is being well looked after. Accidents happen and hopefully you’ll be on the other side of this soon and can all begin to recover. Be strong and I hope you’re getting some sleep now. Get well soon little baby and your poor husband too.

Mummyoflittledragon · 07/11/2021 05:01

Flowers I hope your baby boy will be ok. Sending you all big hugs xx

TimeForTheChristmasTree · 07/11/2021 05:02

Best wishes OP, horrible accident to have. I hope your son heals soon and that DH is okay too. Hopefully you are all home together soon Flowers

SusannaRowan · 07/11/2021 05:21

Hope your DS is on the mend soon OP.
I absolutely whacked DD's head on a doorpost when she was a baby, whilst rushing to answer the door. We spent a night in hospital, but no fracture or permanent harm and we've had two swallowing medication incidents too.

All these falling down stairs posts make me want to buy a bungalow though!

LightsS0bright · 07/11/2021 05:27

@SusannaRowan I’ve been thinking a lot about bungalows!

I'm sure you DS will be fine Thanks

Iv managed to fall down the stairs twice holding a baby and not just my own but my nephew too. First time I was 37 weeks pregnant holding my toddler & she was fine but I went into labour 6 hours later. When holding my nephew I managed to turn so he landed on me but I broke my toe. I hate stairs Blush

JuneOsborne · 07/11/2021 06:12

Happened to a friend of ours. Similar situation, the DH had the baby in a sling on a country walk. He slipped and fell and the baby banged his head. 2 skull fractures. The baby is almost 2 now and completely fine. The DH broke his ankle.

The DH was in bits. They've never used a sling again.

Hope it all turns out ok for you and your lo. Bet your DH is beside himself. Flowers

SunshineCake1 · 07/11/2021 06:50

I hope you got some more sleep @LightsS0bright and you and baby are able to go home today. Your dh should get checked too as you'll have enough on looking after baby.

I fell up the stairs carrying DC1 when he was seven months old. I feel up the same stair carrying DC2 when they were seven months old. I stayed downstairs with DC3..

longtimemarried · 07/11/2021 07:24

Am thinking of you today and will light a candle, do hope your baby is improving.

NYEdoctor · 07/11/2021 07:45

Hi OP - consultant paediatrician here. I hope you are ok and you must try not to worry. Skull fractures are quite common after these type of injuries - we probably pick up far more now as we scan most babies. I suspect there are many people from our generation are walking around with healed skull fractures that were never picked up as babies as we wouldn’t have been scanned. In my unit we offer a six week follow up in clinic for a child with a skull fracture and then we discharge if all well , all the babies I have cared for have got through this with no ongoing complications. I wish you all a speedy recovery. X

DeepDown12 · 07/11/2021 07:51

So sorry this happened to you. This happened to my boss - his 1y old DS fell out of his high chair and hit his head on stone paved floor. Also had 2 fractures and also a concussion. The kid fully recovered, is 13 now, doing great at school and being a little athlete. Big hugs for both you and your DH and fingers crossed that this becomes just one of the horror stories to tell at your son's graduation party!

Freetodowhatiwant · 07/11/2021 07:59

What a stressful time for you all. My then 4 year old fractured his skull in two places by falling off a scooter. We were all hospital 6 nights together whilst they monitored the internal bleeding. He has been absolutely fine. Hope all goes well.

MrsPnut · 07/11/2021 08:01

I fractured my skull when I was 2.5, I opened the bedroom window and was telling my neighbour that my Grandma was coming to stay when I slipped and fell out onto the concrete front step. My parents didn’t realise I could open the window. I was kept in overnight and as I kept escaping the cot was allowed home the next day.
I have had no lasting effects except a faint line on my forehead.
