I don’t think I’ve really processed it yet. DH slipped down the stairs carrying DS and I saw him land on his head.

DS is only 4 months old. He’s had a scan on his head and has two fractures and lots of swelling. They don’t think he has brain damage. We’re staying in the children’s hospital overnight for observation. They have to wake him up every hour. I’m so scared, I don’t think I’ve left fight or flight mode yet.

If this happened to any of you how was the recovery?

My baby ds went down 4 stairs (in his buggy) and landed on concrete with the buggy in him.
999 call and the worst minutes of my life.
A fine and dandy teen now.
Sorry this has scared the beejesus out of you op...

Nero2021 · 06/11/2021 23:07

Not even remotely the same type of injury but when my sister was a baby my mum left me in the house with her while she got something out of the car. In a matter of seconds she crawled up to our Christmas tree and bit into a glass bauble and swallowed. There was blood everywhere and she had to be taken to hospital in an ambulance on blue lights. By the following day you wouldn’t have known anything had happened! They are weirdly resilient. I also know of someone else who’s baby fell backwards off of a kitchen worktop and fractured her skull and she’s now 6 and thriving. Point being as other posters have pointed out that accidents happen, but more often than not the outcome is good. Hoping for a speedy recovery for him Flowers

Oh I’m so sorry, this must be a really scary time and I hope you all make a quick recovery. Flowers

My mom dropped by brother down the stairs and he fractured his skull. He’s in his 40s now and other than discovering an oddly shaped head when he shaved it in his teens he is absolutely fine.

When i was 8 months pregnant i fell down some concrete stairs holding my 1 year old. I dropped him on his head and landed on my stomach. Both kids are ok. 22 and 23 now. I however have lost my balance.

wizzkidd · 06/11/2021 23:08

So sorry you're going through this. It happened to my cousin, dropped as a baby by her DF. No lasting damage, now a successful adult.

Seeleyboo · 06/11/2021 23:08

Posted too soon. Sending wishes to you that all is ok.

That makes me absolutely shudder. My brother bit his tongue off as a child falling down the stairs and had to have it stitched back on and that doesn’t seem half as bad as a glass bauble.

HH here too OP.

Warblerinwinter · 06/11/2021 23:14

Bloody hell, it seems the world is full of adults and children with bouncy heads! Or maybe MN is full of guilt stricken mums from causing accidental damage to their children?😳
What a lot of horror stories that turned out well- I feel a bit sick reading them all.
Best wishes Op, what a horrible scary thing. I hope in a few years you’ll be one of those saying I did that but they turned out fine!

Mymapuddlington · 06/11/2021 23:15

Didn't even cross my mind to think 'I hope I get a bed instead of a chair'.

My son has been rushed to hospital and admitted a few times. As soon as he was settled I asked for a fold out bed rather than a chair. I know that if I can get some sleep in an actual bed I’m more likely to remember what the doctors say, be less emotional and more able to care for ds and take on board what is going on and how I can support him etc

Hm2020 · 06/11/2021 23:17

Hand hold op a friend of mines wife tripped down some outside stairs in some snow holding there baby who was a newborn the baby had a skull fracture the pictures of the scans looked horrendous and I believe they where in hospital over a week but I saw pictures of him starting school the other month and as far as I know all is good. Be kind to yourself op sending strength Flowers

EmmaMaya · 06/11/2021 23:17

Sending good vibes.

Wheresthebeach · 06/11/2021 23:18

Sending best wishes to you and DH. It's scary for sure.

If it's any comfort:
DH rolled off a chest of draws that was being used as a changing area and was fine.
I jumped on a glass topped coffee table aged one, a bit of plastic surgery later on my lip and I was fine,
I slipped on the stairs holding DD and we bounced down together, both fine but we still, 16 years later, have a 'no wearing just socks on the stairs' rule.

This happened to me too ,my DS was one year old at the time,i tripped on the stairs and landed at the bottom with me still clutching the baby but he hid his head on the banister on the way down,i was beside myself,we got DS to the hospital where he was kept in for observation for three days as he had two fractures to his skull and swelling too,the doctor said the fractures would heal themselves and he would be fine,we went home on the fourth day.
My DS is now a strapping 6FT 4 30 year old and has two degrees under his belt with first class honours.Sending you and your DH and ds lots of positive healing thoughts x

Cordeliathecat · 06/11/2021 23:22

My husband fell from the top step down to the bottom step of our stairs hold our 6 week old baby. She flew out of his arms and landed on her head at the bottom. She was unresponsive. They were both rushed to hospital. She was still unconscious nearly an hour later. Scan showed severe swelling and a fracture over the top of her head ear to ear. We were told to call family and prepare ourselves to say goodbye.

Miraculously she came round. Further tests showed no brain damage. She was very grumpy for about 2 weeks. But other than that, made a full and speedy recovery.

This was 12 years ago. She is perfectly healthy, very clever, full of life etc.

The awful experience stayed with me and my husband but not her thankfully!

Praying that you have the same outcome x

Thunderbolted · 06/11/2021 23:24

My brother was accidentally dropped at 5 months old and fractured his skill. Big lump and bruise but he was absolutely fine. Babies are much more resilient than they look.

MichelleScarn · 06/11/2021 23:32

Can't offer more than a handhold and the info am sure you know op that if its the wee hours and you need support, bump your thread and you'll get support. X

CherryBlossomAutumn · 06/11/2021 23:41

Big hand hold here too. Sounds as if all the vital signs are positive though. Scan would show anything very serious.
Also had a child with a serious concussion and brain swelling from an accident at school but absolutely fine,

GatoradeMeBitch · 06/11/2021 23:45

Didn't even cross my mind to think 'I hope I get a bed instead of a chair'.

Does it ever cross your mind to become a person capable of empathy?

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 06/11/2021 23:53

I hope all of you have as peaceful a night as possible under the circumstances and those with injuries recover from them as quickly and fully as practical.

TirednWorried · 06/11/2021 23:54

Sending you all best wishes foe a speedy recovery. Something similar happened to a neighbour. The only thing i would say is they faced some pretty rigorous cross examination as falling downstairs is quite a common cover story for abuse

KnitFastDieWarm · 06/11/2021 23:55

My DH fell off a top bunk at that age and I still don’t think his DM has quite recovered - he’s almost 40 Grin accidents happen! I hope your DH is ok, he must be distraught Flowers

ArrrMeHearties · 06/11/2021 23:59

Sending you, your dh and ds lots of hugs and hope dh is okay what a horrible fright he will of got when it happened as will you Flowers. Wishing your ds a speedy recovery Bear

custardbear · 07/11/2021 00:04

Just wanted to send virtual hugs, we feel like dreadfulmpatents, but shit like this happens to everyone, my DS ages about 15 months found and drank Turps which was secreted away in a friends house, we couldn't have stopped it. He's fine, scary at the time, your baby I'm sure will be fine, be kind to yourself and your DH, accidents happens, good luck
