I don’t think I’ve really processed it yet. DH slipped down the stairs carrying DS and I saw him land on his head.

DS is only 4 months old. He’s had a scan on his head and has two fractures and lots of swelling. They don’t think he has brain damage. We’re staying in the children’s hospital overnight for observation. They have to wake him up every hour. I’m so scared, I don’t think I’ve left fight or flight mode yet.

If this happened to any of you how was the recovery?

@LightsS0bright

Thankyou all, *@NumberTrain* that’s really reassuring.

DS is sleeping now.

The staff have all been brilliant.

Lots of good wishes op

Praying for you all xxxxx

SockQueen · 06/11/2021 21:29

Hand hold for you. I've no experience of this as a parent, but I fractured my skull rolling off the changing table as a baby and 37 years on I seem to be ok!

peppersauce1984 · 06/11/2021 21:31

It is so easily done. Poor dc and dh. Must be so worrying for you all. Wishing you dc a speedy recovery xx

Sending huge hugs @lightss0bright

I nearly killed myself falling down the stairs whilst carrying dd as a baby so my heart goes out to you as you are living my biggest fear.

My friend friend dropped her baby off the bed in hospital the day she was born, had to be monitored for hours as they suspected swelling but weren't able to x-ray. All turned out fine so fingers crossed everything g is OK with your little one. I will keep you in my prayers

I hope your dh is OK. I should think he will be beating himself up terribly.

Atmywitsend29 · 06/11/2021 21:37

Couldn't read and run op, holding your hand tonight Flowers

villanova · 06/11/2021 21:37

Hi, this happened to me - DC was 4months old, I fell down a full flight holding them one Sunday morning (no idea why). I had a fractured wrist (didn't set right, needed it pinned), they had fractured skull. This was 12 years ago - were kept in hospital for 1 week as they kept vomiting, later concluded it was an infection. Caring for them with a wrist cast was fun!
We had paeds referral for regular (every 6mo, I think) checks until they were 2yrs, to check development was OK. All went well, they have developed 'normally' and are now in grammar school with no long term damage.
What has happened has happened, you're in the right place for the best care. It may not yet be the time for humour, but this quick vid is worth a look () - worry just saps your energy.
Sending you hugs and a handhold!

ChristmasGrogu · 06/11/2021 21:38

Offering another hand to hold and lots of love to the 3 of you. Do encourage DH to seek attention if he is injured, phrase it in you need him working to look after you both when you get discharged, so he doesn’t feel too guilty to get help.

MiniPumpkin · 06/11/2021 21:42

Oh my goodness op hh to you Flowers no advice I’m sorry but I will be thinking of you, best of luck x

oakleaffy · 06/11/2021 21:45

That must have been so terrifying to witness.
Stairs can be so slippy, and carrying a baby takes both arms, with no hand to hold the bannisters.
Your husband will be beside himself with worry and doubtless, guilt..but it was an accident.
Your boy is in the best place possible.
The hospital will have seen incidents like this before, and will know how best to treat him.

makelovenotpetrol · 06/11/2021 21:47

This happened to me as a child, two skull fractures. I didn't suffer any long term effects as a child and I've been absolutely fine since.
Hope your little one is ok OP

LightsS0bright · 06/11/2021 21:47

Thanks @villanova glad to hear your DC is okay.

DS’s head is a very funny looking shape at the minute Hmm

Echoing all the positive thoughts from PP and sending hugs

JammyRedRooo · 06/11/2021 21:50

I always worry about injuring DD but a few people have shared stories with me that have made me realise that babies aren't as fragile as we may think. Handhold for you OP wishing your DS and DH a speedy recovery Flowers

LightsS0bright · 06/11/2021 21:50

@MrsElijahMikaelson1

Try and get some rest yourself 💐
Hoping to get moved to a ward soon where I think I might get some kind of bed rather than a chair

HH and hoping DS is back home soon.
Flowers for you, DH and DS.

Lovemusic33 · 06/11/2021 21:56

This happened to a relatives baby, grandmother fell down the stairs holding the baby, both baby and grandmother had broken bones and I think baby had a head injury, baby made a full recovery as did grandmother.

Sending you a big hug and I hope your baby makes a quick recovery [flowers[

Mumtothenipper · 06/11/2021 21:57

This happened to my little brother when he was this age, aside from a scary night for my folks he was absolutely fine and the fracture all heeled really easily. He’s now 37! When I was small I fell off the back a swing… (I’m of enough that this was pre-padding on the ground under swings) and fractured my skull. Couple of nights in hospital under observation and then all fine. The worst thing for me was putting my hand down on a rail as I left hospital and getting a bee sting.

I really hope your little one, and you and your husband are all ok. Take care. Sending unmumsnetty hugs. Flowers

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 06/11/2021 21:57

So sorry to hear this. I hope your baby son is ok and your DH. He must be in bits.

TableFlowerss · 06/11/2021 21:57

Aww bless you OP. Babies look fragile but they’re tougher and more resilient than we know. I remember my friend was about 7 and we were playing outside and she fell off the climbing frame from the top, head first on to concentrate. She was absolutely fine.

Hope you’re all ok x

ladycarlotta · 06/11/2021 21:58

I'm so sorry OP. You must be terrified. I wish I could offer more constructive information but I can only offer a very tight handhold.
