Could you survive all day in the pub?

Not quite all day, but bear with me...

I have a very dear friend with a shared sporting interest. We travel all over to see our team. Usually we make a day of it and see the sites of the area we're visiting before the game, perhaps a pint or two with lunch then dinner and drinks afterwards. We do both enjoy a drink but I'm not as good at it as I used to be. TBH this friend is really the only person I drink with these days

The star attraction of the town for this weekend seems to be a pub/brewery. We're both real ale fans and the place sounds great, but I'm worried I might not survive a whole day!

Friend is very easy company, we could easily sit and chat all day, I'm worried about my capacity for alcohol.

We'll travel up by train, probably arrive 11am ish and be away to the game by 3pm then carry on after.

Could you do it?

You can break it up with food and the match. Plus good company, that's vital.

AColdDuncanGoodhew · 04/11/2021 17:56

You could have a soft drink and start drinking a bitty later? That's what I'd do cos I'm a proper lightweight Grin

Lemonsyellow · 04/11/2021 17:57

Have some soft drinks? I don’t really drink alcohol at all and am happy to spend time in the pub with friends.

Burnamer · 04/11/2021 17:59

Gosh OP, I wonder how you could avoid getting hammered? If only there was a thing like beer but without alcohol?

FindingMeno · 04/11/2021 17:59

No. Not even being a non drinker!

Burnamer · 04/11/2021 17:59

Sorry, that was unnecessarily snippy.
2nd attempt:

Could you drink soft drinks OP? Maybe alternate them?

Bettybantz · 04/11/2021 17:59

I could, yes. I love a day in the pub!

Powerpotpie · 04/11/2021 18:04

No

Spiceup · 04/11/2021 18:05

No, you can't mix soft drinks and real ale, you just can't Grin

Nobody will force you to keep drinking all day. Drink slowly and say no when you have had enough. Keep a glass of water on the go at all times and sip away at that too.

Hm2020 · 04/11/2021 18:13

Sounds like my sort of day just make sure u know where the nearest food place for when you leave!

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 04/11/2021 18:18

Yep I could do that, just don't drink fast, don't drink cocktails, wine or shots and get some food.

I did a whole day in the pub last year and didn't get tremendously drunk. Started at 1pm, had lunch, loads of chat, enjoyed the sun, then had dinner about 7pm and left the pub at kicking out time at 10pm. Pacing yourself is key!!

politics4me · 04/11/2021 18:19

I sympathise, as I got older, hangovers are fearsome really vicious , my head aches just thinking about more than a couple of pints. But I like pub life so pints of diet cola.
Do not drink spirits.

Liverbird77 · 04/11/2021 18:20

I love a drink, but day drinking makes me feel terrible.

I'd maybe have one or two interspersed with soft drinks. A real friend would understand and be fine with it.

pussycatlickinglollyices · 04/11/2021 18:20

You won't know until you try.
I'd be fine.

Spiceup · 04/11/2021 18:21

Friend will be fine whatever I do, I'm just not very good at moderation once I get a taste for it.

I went to a beer festival recently. 1pm to 9pm. I worked out the next day I had the equivalent of 4-5 pints... we only got halves, drank slowly, had soft drinks/tea, had food... (DH had about 8 pints i think!)

TwinklyBranch · 04/11/2021 18:23

God no! I'm a lightweight, would be asleep in the corner after 3 drinks! Grin

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 04/11/2021 18:25

I love real ale. Sounds like my dream Saturday. I miss going the pub!

A580Hojas · 04/11/2021 18:27

I couldn't. I def. couldn't start drinking at 11am! I'd have a coffee, then lunch, a soft drink then maybe 1 drink before the game. After the game 2 or at a push 3 would be my limit.

Spiceup · 04/11/2021 18:29

It's very much a real ale pub. It doesn't do food or coffee, but it opens at 10am!

OP posts:
ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 04/11/2021 18:31

I don't drink yet I'm positive I'd survive.

notacooldad · 04/11/2021 18:36

So 4 hours? I be sat in a pub longer by my
That's les than a typical night out for me and DH.
Me and DH went out at 6.30pm last Friday and left at 01.30 hrs.
We only planned on having two drinks and going home for a meal.
Same when I meet up with friend, meet at 7 and leave at 11.30.

TeamRick · 04/11/2021 18:36

This is where the phrase it's a marathon not a sprint comes in from my experience!
Drink slowly, break it up with a soft drink etc!

CottonSock · 04/11/2021 18:43

4 hours is not long. I don't like ale though, if it was a wine bar I'd probably leave merry. But I'd likely eat a nice meal too.
