Could you survive all day in the pub?

Not quite all day, but bear with me...

I have a very dear friend with a shared sporting interest. We travel all over to see our team. Usually we make a day of it and see the sites of the area we're visiting before the game, perhaps a pint or two with lunch then dinner and drinks afterwards. We do both enjoy a drink but I'm not as good at it as I used to be. TBH this friend is really the only person I drink with these days

The star attraction of the town for this weekend seems to be a pub/brewery. We're both real ale fans and the place sounds great, but I'm worried I might not survive a whole day!

Friend is very easy company, we could easily sit and chat all day, I'm worried about my capacity for alcohol.

We'll travel up by train, probably arrive 11am ish and be away to the game by 3pm then carry on after.

Could you do it?

Real ale isn't that strong is it?

AuntyMabelandPippin · 04/11/2021 18:44

The secret is to drink halves.

It does work, honestly.

Mind, the days when I could drink pints and pints are sadly over. I just feel too full after a second pint now.

VeryQuaintIrene · 04/11/2021 18:48

Yes, just coming on here to say do it by halves - has saved me from obliteration many a time!

MiddleParking · 04/11/2021 19:02

Nope. The idea sounds so cosy and fun but in reality, after a few drinks I’d pee about thirty times then fall asleep.

Depends if you think pints of 6.5% is strong I suppose! Some of it is weaker but it's a bit tasteless then
Echobelly · 04/11/2021 19:04

No, I usually get a terrible headache if I drink before late afternoon, and even drinking later I can only have about 3 pints/equivalent units maximum in one session. OTOH, I am quite good and pacing myself and having non-alcoholic drinks in between.

Holidaytan · 04/11/2021 19:06

How do people spend all day in the pub without spending most of it in the toilet seeing?

Holidaytan · 04/11/2021 19:06

Weeing!

RampantIvy · 04/11/2021 19:08

@Spiceup

No, you can't mix soft drinks and real ale, you just can't Grin
DH would agree with you, but I don't. Just drink tea or coffee instead or low alcohol beer.
Crepuscularshadows · 04/11/2021 19:11

If it's a real ale pub it should have a good range of non alcoholic beers. Nanny state and all that jazz. Generally taste a bit shit but once you're on pint X, you can intersperse to keep yourself upright.

Eat plenty.

Have fun

BigMamaFratelli · 04/11/2021 19:11

Yeah I could. Sounds great! But if you want to make sure you get the most out of your trip drink halves. Or thirds even. And keep away from the ridiculously strong stuff. And keep snacking, that'll help.

A friend owns a taproom and he's more than happy to do sixths if there's a load of things people want to try.

gogohm · 04/11/2021 19:17

Drink slowly and choose lower abv beers

DriftingBlue · 04/11/2021 19:21

Spending the day drinking in a pub is not my worst idea of how to spend a day, but that is because things like running ultra-marathons and skydiving exist. I’d be dying to leave after an hour.

ParkheadParadise · 04/11/2021 19:29

Aye, I could.
Years ago I met a friend for lunch in a pub at 1pm.
We had the best day we were still there at closing time.

I did once, broken up in the afternoon by a football match. Worse hangover ever. I blame Timmy Mallett who I saw on the way to the game.

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 04/11/2021 19:59

Ha, not these days!

I'd avoid the alcohol until after the game. Surely they must do some kind of snack even if only peanuts - I'd have soft drinks and a snack in lieu of lunch,

Bettybantz · 04/11/2021 20:15

You need a nice session ale and maybe go for schooners

As it happens I'm entered for, not an ultra, but a 10 mile race the following day Grin

Yes I could quite happily manage that.

In fact I do most weekends.
I couldn’t drink real ale though….wine or rum for me!

Just make sure you eat! Enjoy!

sageandbasil · 04/11/2021 21:06

Ive spent many good days in the pub catching up. I love it

Kendodd · 04/11/2021 21:10

If by survive you mean not actually die, then yes, I believe I would.

Soberfutures · 04/11/2021 21:14

Any good real ale place will sell 1/3rds or a paddle. So just get those and take slowly. And no bar can not sell soft drinks. And my local ones do pork pies or cheese boards to help soak up the ale 🍺

LoisWooookersonsLastNerve · 04/11/2021 21:17

Hell yes. Just do the traffic light system, third drink is the red light. Stop for a half hour and have a water.

Scarby9 · 04/11/2021 21:20

Pubs generally sell food and nice coffees too.
You could probably even break the afternoon drinking with a pot of tea (and a mini bag of twiglets).

Snoods · 04/11/2021 21:28

I say just enjoy it, as you already are. The odd day and with food .. sounds lovely
