Why are the Tories so great?!

Answers such as 'there's no one better' or 'would you prefer Kier or Nigel' aren't answers.

I see no benefits at all to having the current government we have, all I see is a bunch of self serving elitist willy waving boys who care only about the wealthy.

How are they voted in over and over and why has no one else stepped up that has morals and can actually do something good?

@MissConductUS

Conservative vs liberal political views are driven more by psychological factors than issues.

These key psychological differences can determine whether you're liberal or conservative

'psychological differences' is rather broad. These differences emerge in relation to dispositional traits but also values which are moulded by our experience of society, the power we/our demographic groups hold etc. We also adapt our world views based on feedback we get from our environment. These are all psychological processes. It's not as simple as people are born Tories.
Pheasantlysurprised · 04/11/2021 16:54

I think if the media didnt supply us with someone to look down on, politics as we know it would go bust Grin

bothjetplanes · 04/11/2021 16:55

The 'lack of a moral compass' /'Tory scum' attitude, is why Labour can't win elections. You need previous Tory voters to switch or non-voters to engage

Well yes. Labour voters tell so many people they are scum. Tories. Leave voters. People who think biological sex matters for women's safeguarding and fairness. Anyone who doesn't exactly agree with them. I can't say it enough. Stop telling people they are scum and start showing people you respect them and how your will improve their lives and give them opportunities. Then they might start voting for you.

In short the Tories won the last election for very simple reasons.
Labour under Corbyn were just unvoteable for for many. Labour voters and the left wing kept telling leavers they were thick.

Tories showed respect for people who voted leave.

They aren't - I can't understand why people support Alexander Boris and his act of behaving like a bumbling buffoon.

I would never vote Tory

Livpool · 04/11/2021 16:56

@Stellaris22

Because the media is powerful and convinced people Corbyn was dangerous.

Because people want to protect their wealth rather than caring about education, NHS etc.

Because people think ‘clapping for the NHS’ negates the underfunding.

Completely agree with this
CoronationChickens · 04/11/2021 16:56

@Pheasantlysurprised to clarify, it's people who take advantage of the system that voters here object to, not a safety net for those genuinely in need.

Stellaris22 · 04/11/2021 16:57

What part of the Tory government do people think ‘respects’ the average person?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 04/11/2021 16:58

‘So how bad does the country have to get before the electorate opts for a labour government ? ‘

Well that rather depends on which direction Labour goes in, ie makes itself more or less electable, over the same period, doesn’t it?

Danikm151 · 04/11/2021 16:58

Because the people that are most likely to vote will carry on voting for them. We need to bring in compulsory voting and get rid of the current system.
It should go on the number of actual votes not the number of seats.

a lot of people are of the vein that their vote doesn't matter so they don't bother going to vote. We need to educate children about politics more so that when they are of age they can use their vote in an informed way.

screw the tories. Watching the budget speech made me feel sick. They are so out of touch.

Pheasantlysurprised · 04/11/2021 16:59

Tories showed respect for people who voted leave

Yes, I do think Boris Johnson's government have enormous respect for Jack Smith from Bolton, Peter Ramsbottom in Leigh and Maggie Turner in Liverpool. The conservatives are the new working class party I do believe. No at all like oil and water. Boris will make their lives better, and strengthen their legendary powerhouse in the north.

user1471538283 · 04/11/2021 17:00

They get voted on until their own supporters get hit with the policies or enough people vote or get on board with labour centralist policies. So many vote tory because they do not see themselves as members of the proletariat and they believe that one day they will be wealthy.

DerTrotzkopf · 04/11/2021 17:01

Well of course the tories showed respect for leave voters, they were a leave party Hmm.
Sadly not much respect now vis a vis fishermen, farmers, UC claimants.

Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet · 04/11/2021 17:01

Labour is run by people who think that men can grow a cervix.

No thank you.

Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet · 04/11/2021 17:03

Labour has spent the last few years sneering at working class people and telling people whose views are not 'pure' enough that they don't want their votes.

And then they wondered why people didn't vote for them.

Pheasantlysurprised · 04/11/2021 17:06
@Pheasantlysurprised to clarify, it's people who take advantage of the system that voters here object to, not a safety net for those genuinely in need.
The terminology is toxic and pre-supposes anyone claiming benefits is a scrounger.
How is a disabled mother who has to cram in work and UC a scrounger? And how to we determine one from the other?

To use the term 'benefit scrounger' we are throwing shade on all claimants, because there is no nuance to it.
If there was then we would use a more precise term.

'Scrounger' is a broad sweep that catches anyone who claims, from hard working families to the sick and disabled. Oddly, it is rarely used agains the largest welfare group of all - pensioners.

Iggly · 04/11/2021 17:06

Well I wonder what the government would look like if we didn’t have a first past the post system.

A lot of people feel disenfranchised because they’re in a “safe” seat and only have two choices effectively.

I would much prefer a system that most other countries have - where we end up with a greater spectrum of parties in government.

DerTrotzkopf · 04/11/2021 17:06

@TheCountessofFitzdotterel so give us a clue. What policies ? I do believe the tories have quietly stolen quite a few from the 2019 GE. And Starmer has taken the party in a more centrist direction. So how can they make themselves more electable ? More adept at lying ? Better PR ? Catchy slogans ?

DerTrotzkopf · 04/11/2021 17:10

@Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet which labour mps have done this ? Again same old unquantified comments - labour sneers at the w/c but the tories cut benefits, actions speak louder than words no ?

Stellaris22 · 04/11/2021 17:10

I think a lot of people using the term ‘benefit scrounger’ have never experienced minimum wage or zero hours contracts and how difficult it is to get by. It’s appalling.

Pheasantlysurprised · 04/11/2021 17:10

That said, I doubt belong on this thread as I am non partisan. Im just an odd ball who loathes the press and toxic propaganda.

Im self supporting and have got by via some very good luck, so would never dare to preach to anyone how they ought to live or vote. That said, I am somewhat ashamed to say that I am not a fan of the current 'proletariat'.

Flowertailbird · 04/11/2021 17:13

Fuck knows OP but plenty of people think they are. It baffles me.

Maybe people like a clown in Number 10?

Maybe it's people who like the fact that the Tories are making lying 'just one of those things' and have no moral compass or dignity?

Maybe it's because people love to listen to whatever MP is pushed out every day to defend the shit they do?

Maybe it is because people love to be led by people who don't do as they say but expect the rest of us to do so?

Maybe it's because people like a government who when something doesn't go to plan you can just say 'the matter is closed' or have a vote with your mates to change the direction?

I wish I knew but I hope the scales soon fall from the eyes of these people soon.

MidnightMeltdown · 04/11/2021 17:14

Because the political system is essentially 2 horse race and Labour are so out of touch. They've spend too much time pandering to the middle class metropolitan elite, and have completely lost touch with traditional working class voters.

I used to vote Labour but I don't anymore. I don't want to vote Tory either so I just stopped voting.

Thefartingsofaofdenmarkstreet · 04/11/2021 17:19

Gordon Brown called a woman who asked him about immigration in her area 'bigoted'.

Alex Sobel MP has told women who think that women should have single sex hospitals and refuges that they are bigots and he doesn't want their votes.

That's two that I can think of straight off the top of my head.

Jeremy Corbyn basks in the adulation of people chanting his name, at an event that costs £250 for a ticket.

EnidFrighten · 04/11/2021 17:19

I never have and never will vote Tory. But.

They at least present with confidence and a bit of charisma. Labour are like a lost crisp packet blowing in the wind.

Lots of people prefer to believe in Tory lies with a bit of banter thrown in than Labour bleakness and sob stories presented by a bunch of sad sacks.

Chloemol · 04/11/2021 17:20

You answered your own question

why has no one else stepped up that has morals and can actually do something good?
