I'm clearly a bit bored...

Richard Burke is my perfect man and he and Monica made a much better couple than she and Chandler.

I really couldn't stand Susan. Or Emily.

Ross Geller is the funniest friend and mellowed a lot as he aged.

The Rachel and Joey hook up was totally wrong on all levels. She just wouldn't have gone there.

Kathy cheating on Chandler was pretty unbelievable (in real life both actors protested this, obviously to no avail).

Phoebe was a bit of a bitch who often threw her friends under the bus.

I preferred David the science guy to Mike, he was very funny.

It would have been nice for Joey to have a happier ending, a dream woman or part in a hit show.

Rachel's wardrobe is absolutely incredible.

Monica's Mum is really awful to her.

I hate to say it but Joey is a bit of a loser. Though he was the only one who never got drunk throughout the entire show.

Janice was actually really nice.

I'm sure I have more :-)

Another irritation for me is the episode where Ross breaks up with the 'balded' girlfriend at the beach house, and somehow this takes, like 5/6 hours? It doesn't make any sense. As Ross said himself about joining her in the bedroom 'If I go in there she's going to want to Do Stuff' (and supposedly she doesn't take no for an answer) so he must have had to end it straight away. So how did it manage to drag out 5 hours? It would have made so much more sense for his absence to be down to him having driven her back to the city in Phoebe's cab, then driven back to the beach house alone. That journey would have taken about 5.5 hours and exhausted him so he fell asleep reading the letter Rachel spent his absence writing. It was stupid to say that the process of breaking up took so long that Ross noticed stubble growing through on Bonnie's head before he'd finished. Really grates on me!

SnowWhitesSM · 31/10/2021 22:12

I love Rachel. I think her development worked well, I just wish she had got on that plane.

Ross is awful. I love joey and Janice and Guther. Gunther talking Dutch back to Ross cracks me up.

I like phoebe and chandler. Monica is annoying.

What I like most about friends is that they are all annoying, they can all be assholes to each other ect but they're still friends. They don't have major falling outs and when they do the group doesn't split up. They deal with it and move on. Friends is like a big hug to me and I rematch the whole of it yearly Halloween Blush

SilenceOfThePrams · 31/10/2021 22:17
@SilenceOfThePrams you are spot on with that, especially the bit about Erica!!
Not that I’ve thought about it much, or anything…

Now have a daughter who is utterly obsessed, so they’re on a constant loop here.

I found the show unbearably smug and disliked the characters. After trying some early episodes I gave up on it. It’s enduring appeal is mystifying to me.

DukeofEarlGrey · 31/10/2021 22:22

I would have liked to see this:

Monica + Richard
Phoebe + David
Rachel + Mark
Chandler + Kathy
Ross and idk... Julie?

Can't think of anyone for Joey. Maybe that nice woman who made fruit baskets as gifts Grin

They would all have been much calmer and happier!

MrsCardone · 31/10/2021 22:26

The part of Emily was offered to Patsy Kensit. She would have been a much better Emily, IMO. And maybe she would have hung around rather than leave the show after a few episodes. But then I'm a MASSIVE Patsy Kensit fan Grin.

Skysblue · 31/10/2021 22:33

I was always surprised that they didn’t put Phoebe and Joey together for a bit. They seemed to understand each other a lot better than say Joey and Rachel which made no sense at all.

Loved the show, am rewatching at the moment!

Hedgehog123 · 31/10/2021 22:34

@DukeofEarlGrey Yes! I agree with those as couples.

I came on to say that I always thought Ross and Julie were a good couple and she was the best match for him. Rachel was pretty selfish to break them up frankly!

Julie was so nice and normal and they had loads in common went to grad school together and were both palaeontologists. They would have been really happy and it always annoyed me they split up...I have possibly thought about this a little too much over the years Grin

I'm really glad they didn't as I think they worked really well as friends.
KillingMeDeftly · 31/10/2021 22:44

I couldn't understand why Joey stayed on in the crappy little apartment. He was on a soap - he could've afforded better!

BorderlineHappy · 31/10/2021 22:52

I love Ross and he gets a lot of bad press.
Wonder how many here would take it if their dh moved another man in and wanted him to give the baby his surname.

Rachael also got Bonnie to shave her head so she could get Ross back.

Phoebe to me is the worst.
Shes really manipulative. And brings her dead mother who commited suicide in to everything.

KillingMeDeftly · 31/10/2021 23:01

How was it that Phoebe and Monica knew each other? Was it originally said that they'd been roommates in college? But Phoebe later mentions that she never went to high school. And would Monica have gone to college or done some sort of chef apprenticeship?

User85858686 · 31/10/2021 23:35

@Metallicalover

I love Ross!
Me too. My favourite character by a country mile. His scenes were the only laugh out loud moments.

I’m not sure that was ever said. Phoebe used to live with Monica in the flat but I don’t know about before that
AndTheWinnerIsLucky · 31/10/2021 23:51

Yep, Ross and Chandler for me.

Unsure1983 · 01/11/2021 00:14

I think Rachel and Mark would have been great.

David and Phoebe.

Chandler had massive chemistry with both Janice and Kathy. None with Monica. Chandler and Janice would have got on each other's nerves but probably mellowed with time, and had they had kids would have been a chaotic and messy but very fun and loving family, I think. She adored him. He seemed quite mature in some ways when he was with Kathy. I adore Chandler and he was so good looking and attractive in some series.

Ross needed an intellectual equal, I think. He might have stepped on Julie's sweetness. Didn't have much chemistry with Charlie. I think he should have kept dating intellectuals until he found the one. I think he would have been a much more diligent father than he was.

Joey was such a fabulous character in early seasons, and I think they dumbed him down because his natural character would have outgrown the role they put him in. I think he would have settled down quite early after a brief playboy period but not with anyone in that group, so his character became unrealistic. I think he would have married young and have been a great father. Maybe have moved out of NY if too expensive.

Phoebe is remarkably stable for someone with her background and a little bit of nastiness on her part is no big deal.

Rachel has a fabulous arc with her growth. Ross is not the one for her. I think she needs someone with more true self confidence.

I love Chandler's dad and it would have been nice to see them develop a relationship.

I don’t remember them saying they met in college. Phoebe and Monica used to share the apartment because in one of the flashback episodes, Phoebe secretly moves her things out without Monica knowing but Monica finds out. I think it’s mentioned that Phoebe answered an ad Monica put in the newspaper for a roommate. Also, Amanda (fake British accent woman) also used to live in the building and let it slip to Monica that around that time Phoebe was doing her best to try and cut Monica out of her life but failed because Monica was too “scrappy”. Tbh the continuity in Friends was really sloppy for such a massive show. Chandler and Rachel in particular “first met” in three (I think) different ways throughout the show
APJ1 · 01/11/2021 00:46

Brad Pitt definitely got the best welcome when Monica opened the door for him, the women just went wild!

I don't know if it is true but I've read that audience members used to get so excited when Tom Selleck entered a scene that he sometimes had to film without an audience.

Motherdare · 01/11/2021 02:25

David Schwimmer was the best actor in Friends.

Courtney Cox was the weakest in my opinion.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 01/11/2021 06:46

Rudd was in loads of movies before friends including clueless and Halloween. Lots of stuff after friends as well including voice overs for DreamWorks and 3 marvel movies

BorderlineHappy · 01/11/2021 07:40

Paul Rudd hasn't aged a bit.

He did move out! He got his own place and filled it with very weird stuff like animal statues etc and then he had to move back and they kicked out Eddie.

I loved the first few series but after that it felt like the characters changed massively. Joey went from not academic but normal and still quite funny in a sharp sort of way to almost intellectually disabled. The Joey from the later series it’s amazing he managed to live day to day independently.

Chandler went from snarky and sarcastic to just making weird sounds like blueergh and being sort of laughed at whereas in early series he was making people laugh with him.

All of them basically changed to be quite flat and not as believable.

Kanaloa · 01/11/2021 08:08

@AosSi

Monica would 100% be That Parent who comes on MN to insist she's right and gets laughed about in the school staffroom.
😂 I always imagine Monica would end up as a ‘Dance Moms’ cast member, screaming about her child not having a dance at the competition.
LeaveYourHatOn · 01/11/2021 08:08

Rewatching the episodes now, I'm struck by how much I like Ross, I've never understood the hatred for him on here. He's no worse relationship-wise than any of the others on there.

I love Rachel; i think she's funny, caring, clever and yes, she looks fab. Whoever said upthread that Monica had some awful haircuts - OMG yes!

Sparklingbrook · 01/11/2021 08:15

I would fear for the teachers when the twins got to school. Imagine Monica at Sports Day. Those poor children too.
