Curry’s glitch if you want a cheap laptop

BigYellowHat · 29/10/2021 22:13

Just ordered a Dell laptop for £99! Now got to wait and see if my order actually comes next week. Anyone in the market for one should consider getting on the site and giving it a go. Dying to know if it will turn up!

OP posts:

The person who I was replying to asked about memory and RAM. What DH said was correct about the memory.

ImUninsultable · 30/10/2021 13:46

@TheFairyCaravan

It was pretty clear from their post that they weren't entirely sure what the difference was, but were asking about the actual working power of the laptop because that's what everyone has been discussing. And you didnt say "I dont know about RAM but you can get more storage" so your answer was misleading at best.

And if you needed your husband tell you that an external hard drive gives you more storage then that's.... concerning.

IncessantNameChanger · 30/10/2021 13:50

Cex for cheap tech. Guaranteed for two years if your ok with secondhand.

CheesecakeAddict · 30/10/2021 13:56

@TheFairyCaravan but this has nothing to do with the RAM as PP said, but moreover, word now syncs with your cloud storage device, so providing this is set up, that's pretty outdated advice. Besides, many schools don't allow USB use any longer because of the potential risks to the network, so you'd just be saving the work onto a USB for when you bought a new laptop.

canyoutoleratethis · 30/10/2021 13:58

@TheLazyChef

I know I've already posted on here, however I'm so disappointed that it isn't the bargain I thought.

Could anyone please point me to where I could find what I need for a reasonable cheap price please?

My DC will use it for education, a couple of games (The Sims / Roblox) and browsing or video.

Doesn't need to be state of the art, I am realistic about what I can get for a budget. Just work at a basic level for these things.

As some PP said, it's no good if it doesn't function for what it would be used for.

Sorry @TheLazyChef, I’m absolutely no good to you as my cat probably understands more about computers than I do, but I’m just bumping your message so hopefully someone can advise you

So frustrating that I missed out on this!!

You didn't miss out on anything decent.

If I want to add more RAM, is this ^ the sort of thing I need to be looking at? And whats the minimum amount I'd need to add please?
I know currys have a 4gb too for £20-25, but I'm not sure that would be enough.

Thanks!

icedcoffees · 30/10/2021 14:10

@TheLazyChef - what kind of budget do you have in mind?

How have you missed out? It's still there for £99 when I refresh this page

ItsNotNormalLove · 30/10/2021 14:19

Oh, oops ignore my previous post, I see it's still at that price but not available for delivery or collection now!

julieca · 30/10/2021 14:32

If anybody who bought it changes their mind, you can return it to a store for free within 14 days.

Thank you - that's very useful to know!
inappropriateraspberry · 30/10/2021 14:40

I ordered one last night. It would be perfect for my parents! Their laptop is dying and they only use it to Skype to Australia and check emails.
Really hope they honour it, order is 'processing' at the mo.

Georgieporgie29 · 30/10/2021 14:42

@icedcoffees I’m in the same predicament as @TheLazyChef and would probably want to go up to £250 or £300 at a push. I had looked at this, www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/lenovo-ideapad-slim-1i-11-6-laptop-intel-celeron-64-gb-emmc-grey-10219055-pdt.html?intcmpid=display~RR
but now after seeing the rest of this thread I’m guessing it’s just as rubbish as the Dell.

Any recommendations would be gratefully received. It’s just for mild internet use and Roblox type games. Thank you.

Mynameisrow · 30/10/2021 14:42

It’s garbage it’s expensive to upgrade the ram.

It can be but it doesn’t have to be. There are videos online showing you how to do it or alternatively you can buy what you want and take it to a professional repair/upgrade place to have it installed.

LikeACatInTheDark · 30/10/2021 14:45

Currys small print on refunds:
"Items bought online, you can return them within 14 calendar days even if you have opened them for inspection. You can examine the goods as you would in a shop but to obtain a full refund you must not start using them or input any data/software The goods must be returned as new and in their original packaging"

So basically you can open the box and look at it, but actually switching it on and trying it out would mean you can't get a full refund?

WeAreTheHeroes · 30/10/2021 15:01

The 14 days is statutory for online shopping - as long as it's not a bespoke item or a hotel room.

PizzaCrust · 30/10/2021 15:12

Showing the same for me- can’t collect or get it delivered.

I was going to buy it as a gift for my parents. They literally would only use it to browse (no streaming, games etc) so it would have been fine for that. Sad to have missed out!

Cherryberrypies · 30/10/2021 15:16

@Georgieporgie29 if you take a look at gaming pcs rather than laptops on Amazon you will find some in your price range.

If you have space for it you usually get more for your money with a desktop and these ones are built for gaming. The lower price ones are usually ideal for starting out.
As an example (I haven’t checked this out was just a quick google) - www.amazon.co.uk/Veno-Scorp-GAMING-Monitors-Renewed/dp/B0933DT3MC/ref=mp_s_a_1_2_sspa?dchild=1&psc=1&crid=339Z70M3GPN2P&keywords=gaming%2Bpc%2Bbundle&sprefix=gaming%2Bpc%2Caps%2C77&th=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUE5RUtNSERXUUcxQUwmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA4MzI1MTMxSk5IN0taRE9IWU9TJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAwNzE5MTcxTkVHVTFHTEpYOTROJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfcGhvbmVfc2VhcmNoX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1635602564&sr=8-2-spons

JustCleaningtheBBQ · 30/10/2021 15:50

The reviews on the website for it are good. Plenty of people saying it's great for just surfing the Web, which is all most of us want it for anyway. I don't think anyone is expecting much more than that for £99.

Jinglebells21 · 30/10/2021 15:53

Would a 4g ram be good for Netflix, disney, browsing and using office? I cancelled the dell laptop but now thinking i shouldn't of, he won't be gaming on it.

Silverswirl · 30/10/2021 16:02

So to play roblox / the sims type games really you are looking at least at £350 really? Is that right?

Georgieporgie29 · 30/10/2021 16:13

Wow @Cherryberrypies thank you so much for your help. Unfortunately, we don’t really have the room for a full computer, hence looking for a laptop if possible.

icedcoffees · 30/10/2021 16:48

Yes, I would say so.

They might technically run on cheaper systems, but they're liable to be slow and glitchy.
