DD bringing a super-strict Vegan friend for tea tonight

Hi all, DD (17) is bringing a pal home for tea (dinner, supper - delete as appropriate 🤣). We are big meat eaters but would never dream of having meat on this occasion. My normally very level headed DD is very keen for ‘us’ to get it ‘right’. So here’s the menu.
Vegan sausage hotpot (browned off Heck vegan chipolatas - made of pea protein so the pack says), I’ve added onions, carrots, tinned toms, garlic, herbs and veggie stock.
Cauliflower cheese
Roast potatoes (they are Aunt Bessies though, as we’re all at work/college until 5-6pm and I’ve no real spuds.
Other veg (peas and broccoli probably).
Pudding - mince pies and custard (Alpro plant based).
Does this sound ok?

Sounds delicious. Are you in the NW? I’m happy to make up numbers Wink.

Ah how times have changed...i was taught when you are invited to someone´s house you eat what is offered, no pursuing personal fads...now everyone bends over backwards to accommodate people who wouldn´t dream of accommodating you...

Whataday21 · 27/10/2021 12:54

I think it's ok to have cauliflower cheese just for yourselves anyway. I know this isn't the point of your thread, but as a vegetarian, I hated it when all of our veggie stuff was made vegan instead, as that was what became fashionable. I really like my cheese!

Oh I understand about the cauli cheese now. Otherwise it seemed a baffling choice.

Oh you'd love me, then Grin

Currently I'm not eating lactose, gluten, yeast, FODMAPS (onions, garlic, certain fruits, pulses / legumes) or meat.

To be fair, I don't get asked out much.

maddiemookins16mum · 27/10/2021 13:00

We are kind of thinking we want to go a bit more ‘less meat’ anyway so this is a sort of trial run to have a proper nice vegan meal.

Check the vegetable stock cube, if using a cube. Some are vegetarian but not vegan.

Courtier · 27/10/2021 13:04

Double check the mince pies. If there's suet then they're not vegan.

Hemingwayscats · 27/10/2021 13:05

As others have said, I’d ditch the cauli cheese because vegan cheese is disgusting.

Most mince pies are vegan unless you buy all butter ones, I don’t think any shop bought ones contain suet (to my knowledge!).

Courtier · 27/10/2021 13:06

I'd have kept it simple tbh. Sausage casserole with roast spuds ditch the cauliflower cheese, vegan cheese is gross.

Then I usually just cook fruit (peaches or nectarines are easy) with cinnamon and sugar and serve with vegan ice cream or custard.

Yes, isn't it great that times have changed to be more respectful.

Isn’t it great that times have changed? Because that sounds like an awful time.
JasperTheHungry · 27/10/2021 13:09

Sounds like an amazing menu, OP. And I love that you’ve included the friend’s favourite dish.

gogohm · 27/10/2021 13:09

Sounds lovely. For future reference I would do something like a one pot eg cassoulet made with Linda McCartney chorizo sausages, vegan and the best sausages according to dd serve with focaccia. My brother takes all the leftovers home when I cook it too. I cook separately and serve meat sausages for us

TwistMyOlive · 27/10/2021 13:13

Why would you change your diet, If you went to theirs they wouldnt change their meals. Albeit cook a vegan meal for her but I’d still eat my usual food.

TrashyPanda · 27/10/2021 13:15

Sounds like you are going to serve a lovely meal.

Since I have extended family members with allergies - yes ones that can kill them - and/or religious preferences I was taught as a child in the 1980s to serve food to suit the guest.

Most guests then had the grace to either eat what was served without complaining or to politely turn down food they couldn't eat.

HadEnough798 · 27/10/2021 13:17

This sounds lovely! You're very nice to put lots of effort in for such a tasty meal :)

meetthewildes · 27/10/2021 13:17

As somebody who is also in Kent, I'd be delighted to join you for dinner.

This sounds bloody gorgeous. What a lovely mother you are!

CovidCorvid · 27/10/2021 13:20

Do they happily eat fake meat...not sure if the Heck sausages are of meat appearance but dh won't eat stuff like quorn, fake ham, etc,

Malibuismysecrethome · 27/10/2021 13:21

I think I would get houmus kebabs in with pita bread and lots of salad. Save the bother

tickledtiger · 27/10/2021 13:23

@SpindelWhorl you must live in a glorious fart free zone.
