DD bringing a super-strict Vegan friend for tea tonight

Hi all, DD (17) is bringing a pal home for tea (dinner, supper - delete as appropriate 🤣). We are big meat eaters but would never dream of having meat on this occasion. My normally very level headed DD is very keen for ‘us’ to get it ‘right’. So here’s the menu.
Vegan sausage hotpot (browned off Heck vegan chipolatas - made of pea protein so the pack says), I’ve added onions, carrots, tinned toms, garlic, herbs and veggie stock.
Cauliflower cheese
Roast potatoes (they are Aunt Bessies though, as we’re all at work/college until 5-6pm and I’ve no real spuds.
Other veg (peas and broccoli probably).
Pudding - mince pies and custard (Alpro plant based).
Does this sound ok?

Pesto isnt veggie or vegan friendly. My sons been veggie for 20 odd year

There’s loads of vegan pesto available now.

scottishnames · 28/10/2021 19:53

Vegan pesto - of course it's available.
If you can't find a jar, here's how to make it:

I’m a meat eater but live with a vegetarian, probably vegan by new year’s. Super strict vegans are also against using palm oil which is used in a lot of products. It a very contentious product at the moment making it a minefield for people who aren’t familiar with vegan requirements

Give her an apple and a glass of juice. Cook your steak nice and juicy 🤣

DH has a vegan friend who also has a nut allergy. Fortunately I'm used to dairy free thanks to kids being dairy intolerant in the past and have a reliable pudding (egg free chocolate banana bread) so managed a nice meal. Hasselback potatoes are a nice option as they work well with normal veg oil and are much quicker to cook than normal roasties. Also look fancy.

Tofu curry is bloody gorgeous! Along with roasted cauli with rice, bonbay potatoes and homemade chapattis! Get some onion bhajis alongside and Grin

LadyMuckington · 28/10/2021 23:05

Oooh long time vegan here and the Asda mince pies are one of my fave accidental vegan finds! Only 87p which means they’re so much cheaper than the ones which market themselves as specifically for vegans and a lot nicer too! We ate 3 boxes a week last Christmas Grin

Tesco sell a free from vegan pesto for 90p. The wicked range also do a range of flavours of vegan pesto too, my fave is the pumpkin one. You can get vegan pesto in pretty much every supermarket, I quite like the one Aldi does but it’s only occasionally available in the special buy section.

Ah how times have changed...i was taught when you are invited to someone´s house you eat what is offered, no pursuing personal fads...now everyone bends over backwards to accommodate people who wouldn´t dream of accommodating you...

It's not a bad thing that people are happy to not serve up animal flesh and products if a guest doesn't eat them. The opposite isn't true, if a vegan cooks a meal people can eat it.

It depends what's in that vegan meal, really. There are all sorts of food intolerances. Most vegan food is heavy on carbs which for some people can cause issues - especially if you're diabetic for example

BocolateChiscuits · 29/10/2021 01:47

I sometimes make vegan cheese sauce without any vegan cheese.

I use marg, flour and soy milk for the white sauce bit, in the same way you would use butter, flour and cow's milk in a traditional white sauce. Then instead of cheese I add a fair amount of nutritional yeast to get the savoury, cheesiness. Then I might soup it up a bit with mustard, miso paste, or nutmeg depending what I'm doing with it.

Nutritional yeast, or nuch, sounds yuck, but it is seriously tasty. I can happily eat it with a spoon, and my kids with very bog standard unadventerous tastes both love it. It's also very good for you with lots of protein and B vitamins.

Just order fish and chips. Your daughters friend can just have a bag of chips. Why cater to entitled guest?

Ddot · 29/10/2021 06:16

Vegan food is not easy for me too processed too hard to digest I'm meat free but loves a bit of cheese

GirlWithAGuitar · 29/10/2021 06:32

The guest wasn’t ‘entitled’.
OP and her child wanted to make something.
The meal has already taken place.

Other than that, your post was great and really helpful to the OP I’m sure. 😂😂😂

Some people. 🙄

Vegans will not eat chips as cooked with fish. Get it right

Most fish&chip shops cook chips separately due to allergies. My mum definitely eats fish and chip shop chips and she's vegan.
Ddot · 29/10/2021 10:37

Most chippies here cook in beef dripping, the odd one doesn't but if she is devout vegan she may need proof that's cooked separately. Veg curry or chilli with rice cant go wrong

What sort of stupid comment is this? Would you consider a child with allergies or vegetarian "entitled". Bloody hell.
pointythings · 29/10/2021 11:21

FrenchBulldogsAreFab there's this thing called being a good host. You may want to look it up.

Madamum18 · 29/10/2021 11:27

It might have been easier to do pasta and a big pot of tomato/lentil sauce ...you do need to be careful about the fats in things like mince pies and pies btw. Good luck/or if happened hope it went well!

theneverendinglaundry · 29/10/2021 11:40

I knew I would find vegan bashers as soon as I read the OP's title. Well done OP on creating a delicious sounding menu and making your DC's friend feel welcome.

It's not entitled to have ethics and to care about animals and the planet.
