What is the best response when cashiers ask “how has your day been”?

I am socially kind of inept and I don’t really like this when cashiers ask this. But I know they are probably told to ask and be friendly to customers. What do others say? I say “not too bad” should I also ask how their day has been?

I normally say ‘Fine thanks, how was yours?’

kimlo · 23/10/2021 16:57

alright, thanks. You?

ivykaty44 · 23/10/2021 16:57

lets not go there - how was yours?

TheQueef · 23/10/2021 16:58

Try the catchall "Not bad" "Been busy?"
Then they'll start rabbling on and you can just nod Smile

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 23/10/2021 16:58

Good thanks, you?
They usually say something like fine thanks and that's all that's required

CocaColaTruck1 · 23/10/2021 16:58

Canny thanks how's yours going

DancingintheSpoonlight · 23/10/2021 16:58

“Not bad thanks, you?” with a smile. Customer service can often be a pretty brutal area to work in so probably nice to feel acknowledged back.

ivykaty44 · 23/10/2021 16:59

tbh Id other they were typically British and mentioned the weather - what happened? why don't we do the weather chat any more?

Curledup · 23/10/2021 16:59

Ah “been busy?” That’s quite a good response. I do sometimes say how has your day been? But I find it all kind of awkward. I think I overthink things too mucb

I like friendly cashiers. I don't mind if it's scripted. What I really don't like is robotic self service machines and these new unstaffed shops that are being trialled. I want PEOPLE!

DramaAlpaca · 23/10/2021 17:00

I say 'great thanks, how's yours?' or something similar.

Curledup · 23/10/2021 17:01

Yes I prefer the weather chat. I find it a bit personal asking how many day is. Sometimes they ask if I am in town for long or got a lots of shops to go to etc and it baffles me a bit !

IncessantNameChanger · 23/10/2021 17:02

I say fine and ask them when they finish. I think they might like a excuse to "debrief" if it's been a long day.

But God, and you? Is the perfect answer. But I'm quite inept too so say fine thank you and forget to ask back!

weebarra · 23/10/2021 17:02

Good thanks, and you?

Curledup · 23/10/2021 17:02

I am not really complaining about these cashiers. I know they are being nice. That’s why I am trying to make sure I am answering the best way !

AuntieMarys · 23/10/2021 17:03

That's why I do scan and shop.

IncessantNameChanger · 23/10/2021 17:03

God = good

Scarby9 · 23/10/2021 17:03

'Good, thanks'
Or
'Glad it's over!'
Followed by
'What time do you finish?'

Pikamoo · 23/10/2021 17:04

If it's been a good day I'll say so, if not then I'd probably say it had been busy. In return I'd ask them if they'd been busy or make some comment about almost being finished if it was close to closing time.

RavingAnnie · 23/10/2021 17:11

I'd rather they didn't ask. I'm not their mate. It's weird. So I just say something like "I'm just here for my shopping thank you". But I'm very anti social and hate this overfamiliarity that businesses seem to think everyone wants whilst at the same time delivering shite customer service.

JaneJeffer · 23/10/2021 17:13

Seriously @RavingAnnie. It would take you less time to say fine thanks. What a misery.

EerilyDisembodied · 23/10/2021 17:14

Fine thanks, and you?

I know they do it because they have to but I really like it and am quite happy to chat a bit if they follow up with something about the weather or similar.

Curledup · 23/10/2021 17:14

Oh that’s funny ravingannie I do see where you are coming from! I just want to be polite back though as I aimed they are told to say it

What JaneJeffer said.

fedup65356 · 23/10/2021 17:17

Rubbish, how's yours been?
