What is the best response when cashiers ask “how has your day been”?

I am socially kind of inept and I don’t really like this when cashiers ask this. But I know they are probably told to ask and be friendly to customers. What do others say? I say “not too bad” should I also ask how their day has been?

@bendmeoverbackwards

And ‘Do you have a club card/loyalty card?’ drives me mad. Especially when followed with ‘would you like one?’ 😡
Why would that first question annoy you? Plenty of people welcomed the reminder to swipe it and get the points. And if I didn’t ask, and they then remembered afterwards that they had one and hadn’t used it, they’d often be almost accusatory towards me, as if I’d deliberately not reminded them. Just because you don’t have one, it doesn’t make the question pointless, and generally it was far less grief for me to ask, so they didn’t forget and then clog up customers services getting the points added on there. I didn’t think anyone would be driven mad by having to take half a second to say “no.”

I get that then asking if you want one is annoying, and I never did that.

Well hopefully RavingAnnie has learnt a little from this thread

Upselling is very annoying. I always feel really sorry for the staff having to do it. I can't believe it ever works enough to be worth the irritation to the customer.

My Tesco delivery drivers are nearly always genuinely friendly and chatty. I quite often have the same one for a few weeks and we have a good catch up. For a while, I had a regular one while we were having some building work done and he'd always ask how it was going etc. Suppose that might have annoyed some people but I think he was showing a friendly interest.
