Alec Baldwin has shot two people with what was thought to be a prop gun.

One person, he cinematographer is dead and the second has been hospitalised.

Absolutely stunning news.

What a horrific thing to happen Sad and what a thing to have to live with for everyone involved.

Tilltheend99 · 22/10/2021 09:52

Presumably he was pointing the gun roughly towards the camera and the cinematographer and director were both stood behind the camera which explains how they were both injured with one shot. Presumably, I don’t know.

NearLifeExperience · 22/10/2021 09:52

Surely adequate SFX now exist that mean no real guns with blanks need any more be used?

Shocking that nothing appears to have been done after the Brandon Lee case; hopefully things will change now.
Sadly, danger on set is not uncommon. Remember there was a film being shot on an active train track a few years ago, and a crew member was killed? Stupidly reckless of whoever was in charge. Shocking.

My heart goes out to all involved in the recent tragedy, especially the loved ones of Halyna.

Fetarabbit · 22/10/2021 09:56

So sad :(

Thighdentitycrisis · 22/10/2021 09:58

The film was about a 13 year old who shot someone by accident

It’s really shocking and tragic

waferingstranger · 22/10/2021 10:00

It's mad that with all the technological achievements humankind has been capable of and all the millions upon millions of dollars in the film and television industry, nobody has yet bothered to create a fake prop gun that looks and sounds just like a real one with no danger of ever actually firing. Maybe this tragic event, which isn't even the first time it's happened, might be the impetus. Who knows.

LittleDandelionClock · 22/10/2021 10:02

I don't understand this either. It can't have been a prop gun then.

What was a real gun (with real bullets) doing there?

Awful tragedy though yes.. Sad

Phyllis321 · 22/10/2021 10:05

It’s desperately sad all round.

whynotwhatknot · 22/10/2021 10:05

you would think after beandon lee they wouldnt even use a prop gun with blanks anymore

whynotwhatknot · 22/10/2021 10:06

*brandon

See upthread…blanks can and have killed, prop gun or not.
chaosmaker · 22/10/2021 10:10

It would have been the job of the props department to make sure that it was the right thing in the right place. Film sets are usually closed but it doesn't mean that it got replaced somehow. Just devastating for everyone involved!

Nondescriptname · 22/10/2021 10:21

@SylvanasWindrunner

Twitter is full of right-wing gun nuts crowing about it. Gross.

Really horrible. He must be absolutely devastated. How on earth did it happen?!

What is there to crow about?
Gonnagetgoing · 22/10/2021 10:46

DB works in film and TV. You’d be surprised how many near misses there are, not necessarily with guns but in safety aspects. Someone has messed up here though of course.

And props fucked up which really shouldn’t happen. Film and TV have been massively affected since the pandemic though (lots of work around) so maybe tighter controls weren’t in place due to that?
kwiksavenofrillsusername · 22/10/2021 10:52

What is there to crow about?

Alec Baldwin is rather vocal on Twitter and has probably upset them by being a ‘Hollywood liberal’ or whatever. No doubt, if he’s ever said anything pro- gun control, they’ll be all over it.

NeonTetras · 22/10/2021 10:54
@Elderflower14 please warn your mum of the pitfalls of buying into fake news.
@WheelieBinPrincess Please check your facts before calling something 'fake news'. Elderflower14's mother is right. "“Rust” is a movie about a 13-year-old boy who goes on the run with his estranged grandfather after the accidental killing of a local rancher, according to IMDb. The movie, which was set to be filmed this month and next month, is directed by Mr. Souza and stars Frances Fisher and Mr. Baldwin, who is also producing the film."

Alec Baldwin's character accidentally shoots and kills a local rancher and does on the run with his grandson.

That's what the movie is about.

NeonTetras · 22/10/2021 10:56

*Grandson did the shooting.

rubicscubicle · 22/10/2021 11:20

@Elderflower14

My Mum's just said she thinks the plot of the film was about someone being shot on a filmset.. If that is true then its really spooky...
It was not a film set. The 13yr old accidentally shot a local rancher. They were not shooting a film as far as I can tell.
Bloodypunkrockers · 22/10/2021 11:44

NeonTetris

Fake news. Not a film set

Still it's "spooky" so that's ok

Bloodypunkrockers · 22/10/2021 11:46

@Elderflower14

My Mum's just said she thinks the plot of the film was about someone being shot on a filmset.. If that is true then its really spooky...
Well it's not true, so not in the least spooky

Thanks for sharing what your mother thinks, though

NeonTetras · 22/10/2021 11:48

@Bloodypunkrockers Read what I posted. It was a film set. And the film is about going on the run because of an accidental killing. Check your facts.

Bloodypunkrockers · 22/10/2021 11:49

@peridito

re posting these helpful comments by jollyandBright and HoardingSamphireSaurusfor those who can't read the whole 3 pages

"It was supposed to be a prop gun but somehow must’ve been real and loaded.

This is a common misconception.
There is no such thing as a ‘prop gun’, they are always real guns, they are just loaded with blanks, which are shell casing with the explosive material but no bullet inside, so it makes the bank but nothing is fired out.

What has likely happens is that the gun was previously fired in another take and part of the blank rounds she’ll casing broke off and lodged in the barrel of the gun, on the next take it was fired and the piece of casing was ‘shot’ out of the gun.

It’s already been stated he was ‘firing at the camera in the scene’ the director and cinematographer would have been sat behind the camera so it makes sense".

"It is likely tit was a camera rehearsal, not shooting a scene, So they would have been stand ins, probably discussing how it would best be set up and filmed. Cinematographers do this all the time. It's how they work out how best to frame a scene, they stand in for the actors and rehearse a scene from all angles.

As JollyAndBright said, the likelihood is that a pervious casing was jammed in the barrel. So sloppy cleaning and another reason for the fake 'realism' of guns in movies to be removed, replaced"

Thanks for pulling the info together. Really helpful in trying to make sense of how this could have happened

So tragic.

NeonTetras · 22/10/2021 11:49

@Bloodypunkrockers The film isn't about a film set, but the plot is about an accidental killing, so Elderflower's mother is right.

Bloodypunkrockers · 22/10/2021 11:51

So you agree it's not about a killing on a film set, which is what the PP said

Good
