What did you think would be more glamorous or impressive than it was?

As a kid I thought that being an actor would be fun and exciting and I'm sure it has its moments but watching the behind the scenes videos much of it looks miserable and dull. Especially action movies where they're required to get drenched with every substance known to man and have explosions and fire going off around them.

What didn't live up to expectations for you?

Art as a career.

I attempted it for a while, doing commissioned work, and it took all the fun out of it. There were some pieces that I hated so much I refused to put my name to them, but they were what the client wanted so I just had to grit my teeth.

Vegas

TaraR2020 · 18/10/2021 12:06

Oxford Street
I was really disappointed first time I went there!

soberfabulous · 18/10/2021 12:08

Venice.

Paris.

Cristal champagne.

Hadenoughofthisbullshit · 18/10/2021 12:09

Night clubs, my sister told me about her nights out and dancing until dawn. I couldn’t wait, I thought it would be so glamorous. Only to find the places pretty dirty and to be bored as anything after half an hour or so.

She forgot to tell me about the disco biscuits Grin

FuggyPidding · 18/10/2021 12:09

The Mona Lisa - much smaller than I thought it would be!! 🙈😂

Pyewackect · 18/10/2021 12:10

Paris.

ShirleyPhallus · 18/10/2021 12:12

Venice

It absolutely fucking STINKS of sewage

OssieShowman · 18/10/2021 12:13

The Great Barrier Reef in Queensland Australia. Paid a lot of money to go out to the reef on a large boat. Go snorkelling. And was very disappointed. I expected it to be very impressive.
No colour, coral was sand coloured. I imagine the coral is dying off.

DGFB · 18/10/2021 12:13

Venice is amazing!

But I agree about the Mona Lisa and Paris in general

Being an adult

AdoptedBumpkin · 18/10/2021 12:15

I found the House of Commons a bit disappointing inside. Looks bigger on TV!

Sickoffamilydrama · 18/10/2021 12:18

Henley lots of people drinking in either boiling hot or freezing cold tents dependant on the weather and occasionally looking at rowers.

I went to children in need black tie gala thing once with a friend who is friends with a kind of celeb and gave her the tickets it wasn't glamorous lots of people competing to be seen, we left half way through with the cheap champagne 🍾.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 18/10/2021 12:22

Stonehenge.

ISeeTheLight · 18/10/2021 12:29

Bruges. Ghent is MUCH nicer - same architecture but there's actually stuff going on.

Business travel (ie for work). Gets very tedious after a while no matter how fancy the hotels are or how fancy your plane seat & food is. Glad I don't have to do it anymore.

Mamamamasaurus · 18/10/2021 12:31

Champagne. Being an adult.

ShagMeRiggins · 18/10/2021 12:31

International business travel.

In the end it’s another hotel (yes it’s usually nice), and another airport lounge (yes it’s usually nice), and another restaurant or room service (also usually nice).

I had a job where I travelled weekly for three years. The glamour wears off quickly.

ProudMaiasaura · 18/10/2021 12:31

New York, genuinely can't think of a single positive about the place but others rave about it. Maybe I'm too poor to enjoy New York properly.

raspberrymuffin · 18/10/2021 12:32

@ISeeTheLight I came here to say business travel too. There's something particularly depressing about sitting in your Premier Inn room working at 10pm because there's nothing else to do.

ShagMeRiggins · 18/10/2021 12:32

Ha, ISeeTheLight. X-post, and I’m with you on this.

samwitwicky · 18/10/2021 12:35

The London Eye

Sickoffamilydrama · 18/10/2021 12:45

Yes definitely business travel although it's sometimes good if you get to look around somewhere new with a colleague.

MouseholeCat · 18/10/2021 12:52

Staying in a 5 hotel. I never did it until I started travelling for work. They don't feel worth the extra cost bump from a 4, which always seem to have way more useful amenities. My DH didn't believe me until I booked one for a holiday but now he agrees.

Workinghardeveryday · 18/10/2021 12:52

Niagara Falls, way smaller than it looks on tv seriously!
