What did you think would be more glamorous or impressive than it was?

As a kid I thought that being an actor would be fun and exciting and I'm sure it has its moments but watching the behind the scenes videos much of it looks miserable and dull. Especially action movies where they're required to get drenched with every substance known to man and have explosions and fire going off around them.

What didn't live up to expectations for you?

Anfield stadium. Smaller than expected, atmosphere was poor.

00100001 · 18/10/2021 12:54

I always thought clubbing too - sounded like people had wicked times. Turns out it's dirty, noisy, dark and you spend most of your evening fending off lecherous guys :/

Spa days - boring as all fuck.

ErrolTheDragon · 18/10/2021 12:55

St Peters, Rome. Curiously lacking in atmosphere.

00100001 · 18/10/2021 12:55

@samwitwicky

The London Eye
ha yes, you get the initial "ooooh, I can see from high up". Then you're stuck there for over half an hour. Same with any tall viewpoint really I suppose.

International business travel, it's tedious, tiring and lonely. Even if the towels are fulffy.

Hoppinggreen · 18/10/2021 12:57

London recently
When I was around 10-15 we used to go to London a few times a year and coming from Yorkshire everything was just so much shinier and cool. Everyone was dressed better, there were exotic restaurants and fantastic theatres etc.
Now, it’s ok but The North has really caught up and we have Selfridges, Harvey Nicks, great Restaurants etc too. Obviously there are more in London but there’s no need to travel there to shop and eat or see a show.
In fact last time I went I was struck by how scruffy most people looked

HumbugWhale · 18/10/2021 12:59

I didn't really enjoy Paris or Rome!

Stickyblue1987 · 18/10/2021 13:01

The Whitehouse
10 Downing Street
Statue of Liberty

ThreeKneeRepeater · 18/10/2021 13:02

The Grand Canyon.
There are far more impressive views to be had at Goosenecks, Grand Viewpoint overlook, Muley Viewpoint.
The Grand Canyon was disappointing after these place. Tourists, chips and souvenirs everywhere.

Scarby9 · 18/10/2021 13:03

Bondi beach.
Small and scratty in comparison with Bamburgh.

Daftasabroom · 18/10/2021 13:07

Professional sports (not televised) very poorly paid, back stabbing and political, trashes your body.

Incywinceyspider · 18/10/2021 13:08

Niagara falls. There was a definite moment of "is that it?". Not helped by the fact that it's soooo tacky. Like Blackpool with a waterfall.

On the other hand, the Bayeux tapestry completely exceeded my expectations!

BlancheB · 18/10/2021 13:09

Spa days and proper (posh) afternoon teas.

Geamhradh · 18/10/2021 13:09

Venice.

PegasusReturns · 18/10/2021 13:10

I’m an outlier then because I quite like business travel. The occasional night to myself in a lovely hotel, ordering room service and watching what I like on Netflix or reading my book in the bath is rather nice given how challenging it is when at home with 4DC.

I also like doing the tourist thing alone: the acropolis; 9/11 museum; Alcatraz all done alone and all the better for it I think Smile

Biggest disappointment was a luxury yacht. Bathroom facilities still feeling like you’re showering in a cupboard and sea sickness doesn’t discriminate.

WhoWearsShortShorts · 18/10/2021 13:12

Paris - dirty, smelly and crowded

Rome - overhyped - especially the colosseum

FKATondelayo · 18/10/2021 13:16

Ladies Day at Ascot - you see more class and elegance on a Blackpool hen do

Sydney Opera House - small and a bit dirty looking. (Haven't been inside though)

I love Paris, but think it's right to be on this list. It is the best and worst of places and it always lets you down. But also it always surprises you.

Liverbird77 · 18/10/2021 13:16

Copenhagen. Very cold and dull. Not how I pictured it.

moreshitandnofuckingredemption · 18/10/2021 13:20

Barcelona
For the London Eye haters - I always suggest the Oxo Tower's a much better move. Go to the bar, buy a drink, you get the same view for the same price, but with a drink - what's not to like?!

RicherThanYew · 18/10/2021 13:21

Education. I believed that in a local community college everyone would be given a chance to study, prove themselves and carve out a better way of life at the end. Absolute bullshit. I can't even get on the bloody courses.

Yes and for the shard - no point in paying for the viewing tower, you may as well go down a few floors and buy a drink with the view instead!
BrilloPaddy · 18/10/2021 13:25

Yes to the London Eye. We had the misfortune of sharing a pod with some sushi eating tourists and my god, if there had been a panic button I'd have pressed it. We were all green by the time it landed back at the bottom. Whatever fish they'd used clearly died in medieval times - it was rancid beyond words and even when we asked them to put it away, they carried on eating.

In fairness, they offered another trip round when they opened the pod up, even the operator said "jesus wept, what died in here". But we couldn't face it, we all felt so so sick.

Florida & Disneyland/Universal studios

Loads of litter and derelict abandoned places/plots
Massive queues for rides which are all pretty similar
Lots of rides that break down/light bulbs broken

HotToddyColdSauvignon · 18/10/2021 13:25

Monte Carlo casino

Obviously the glamour is only when they’re filming James Bond!
