Hot chocolate - milk or water...

Timeisavirtue · 14/10/2021 21:07

So everyone in my house minus me and dd are hot chocolate fanatics, DS absolutely loves them, so went shopping with a friend, was picking up a pack of hot chocolate, they always say mix with hot water.... now we’ve always made ours with milk despite what it says on the packet, friends says she always uses water. I don’t even drink it but the thought of it being mixed with water makes me cringe.... so are you a water or a milk person?

Milk or don't bother here.

Luckytattie · 14/10/2021 22:07

It HAS to be milk

NCLookingForInspiration · 14/10/2021 22:10

Milk, and we use the frother on our coffee machine to froth it up. Best hot choc ever!

JuneFromBethesda · 14/10/2021 22:11

@GTAlogic

Milk. Always. The nicest hot chocolate I've made was when I stirred some chocolate curls or shavings into some warm milk and single cream. I also stirred in some vanilla paste whilst heating up the milk and cream.
Ohhhh that sounds immense 👏
HelloChompy · 14/10/2021 22:12

Definitely milk 😁

thelegohooverer · 14/10/2021 22:15

Milk. And if I’m in the mood, a nice dollop of cream too.

tunnocksreturns2019 · 14/10/2021 22:15

Only water if we’re in a Premier Inn. And even then a DC gets sent to reception for more UHT milks to top up as much as possible Grin

Velvetiser here too Smile

HollowTalk · 14/10/2021 22:16

I really like the Green and Blacks hot chocolate. I can't drink the Cadburys one anymore, it's far too sweet. I don't like the sachets at all.

EnidFrighten · 14/10/2021 22:16

Milk.

But there is a place for the just add water stuff - eg in an office kitchen I wouldn't be arsed hearing up milk. I'd mix some instant water stuff with a splash of milk and top up from the kettle. Nowhere near as nice as made with milk but better than nothing if you have a choc craving!

GrouchyKiwi · 14/10/2021 22:20

Water. Milk is foul.

EdgeOfTheSky · 14/10/2021 22:21

Milk.

And decent actual chocolate, grated.

And even then grown women going ‘squeeee’ over a cheap readily available perfectly ordinary hot drink choice makes me roll my eyes.

Blackmagicqueen · 14/10/2021 22:22

Depends on the type of hot chocolate your using as to how it is meant to be made. The instant ones have milk powder in so say to add water, when i was a child we used to add alittle milk in the bottom and mix up to a thick paste and then topped up with hot water which made it all frothy on the top.
A better mix will have a decent chocolate/cocoa only and be made with milk. Personally as an adult i prefer the latter and don't like the instant Cadbury/galaxy etc instant types.

yesterdayisinthepast · 14/10/2021 22:24

Milk 1000%! Never had it with water but just sounds so🤢

Blackmagicqueen · 14/10/2021 22:24

Find them too sweet*

Paddybare · 14/10/2021 22:26

For those with a velvetiser, I’d actually recommend trying a hot chocolate made with water (a classic 70% ideally). It’s surprising how much milk masks the flavour of the cocoa, it’s a much ‘cleaner’ taste if that makes sense. I actually enjoy it from time to time.

CiaoForDiNiaoSaur · 14/10/2021 22:28

Milk even if it says water. I tend to only drink cocoa though rather than the hot chocolate things. Except salted caramel options. That's yum. and nesquick made with hot milk
DC use water even if it says milk, although once I'd taught DS2 how to make cocoa properly he has started using milk.

Namechangeforone · 14/10/2021 22:30

Milk. And with cocoa and sugar only if using powdered. Tesco finest actually v good as it's purely that!

Looked at the fancier ones and they are full of shit! Clipper has milk powder and some other milk powder thing in it, Twinings has phosphates, emulsifiers... Rank!

Namechangeforone · 14/10/2021 22:32

I mean Options hot chocolate shouldn't even be allowed to be called chocolate. Look at all them chemicals and awful stuff!

Milk Permeate Powder, Fat-Reduced Cocoa Powder (21%), Sugar, Belgian Chocolate (7%) (Sugar, Cocoa Mass, Fat-Reduced Cocoa Powder, Flavouring), Thickener (Xanthan Gum), Dried Glucose Syrup, Skimmed Milk Powder, Coconut Oil, Salt, Emulsifiers (Sunflower Lecithin, E472e), Sweetener (Aspartame), Anti-Caking Agent (E551), Flavouring, Stabiliser (E340ii)

Pashazade · 14/10/2021 22:33

Milk every time....although tempted to try the velvitiser with water just to see and yes a velvitiser my best indulgence of the last few years Grin!

dannydyerismydad · 14/10/2021 22:33

Milk. And cream.

Namechangeforone · 14/10/2021 22:36

The Lindt one has POTATO starch in it fgs!!

The Malteasers one a whole host of crap.

Yes I am now overly invested in hot chocolate Grin and googling what they're all made of! Past my bedtime clearly.

So yes in summary for me it's pure chocolate and milk or Tesco finest.

spotcheck · 14/10/2021 22:37

Hmm

I usually add a splash of water to make a paste, and then add milk or vanilla soy milk.
Yum.

Do I have to go to Water Island with @GrouchyKiwi ?

NotMeNoNo · 14/10/2021 22:38

I once looked up the ingredients of different chocolate drinks after finding a concealed instant Wispa drink.
Cocoa - add your own milk & sugar
Normal drinking chocolate - cocoa and sugar, add your own milk.
After that it goes downhill with the instant add-water ones full of sweeteners and thickeners. Don't think milk improves them.

NotMeNoNo · 14/10/2021 22:39

*congealed not concealed.
