Hot chocolate - milk or water...

So everyone in my house minus me and dd are hot chocolate fanatics, DS absolutely loves them, so went shopping with a friend, was picking up a pack of hot chocolate, they always say mix with hot water.... now we’ve always made ours with milk despite what it says on the packet, friends says she always uses water. I don’t even drink it but the thought of it being mixed with water makes me cringe.... so are you a water or a milk person?

Sorry, but TABU to use drinking chocolate powder - however posh the brand it's still horrible

Melt some real chocolate in the microwave, hear milk until bubbling at edges (don't boil or drink will be grainy) and combine the two ... simple and so delicious you'll never go back

merrymelody · 14/10/2021 22:47

Milk

NotMeNoNo · 14/10/2021 22:48

We were one served steamed milk and a little pot of melted chocolate to mix in, at a cafe in Paris. The children still talk about it!

Warm milk, grated small bar of 70% chocolate, dash of vanilla, cornflour equals delicious Spanish style hot chocolate. I won't drink any pre prepared stuff, it's all too sweet and thin.

Fifthtimelucky · 14/10/2021 22:58

My father always used to make cocoa as if he was making instant coffee: cocoa powder plus a bit of sugar, hot water and then a splash of milk. But then he did call it cocoa rather than hot chocolate.

I don't drink it very often but when I do I like it made with the Charbonnel and Walker chocolate flakes and milk, with a bit of proper whipped cream on top. No marshmallows.

RoseMartha · 14/10/2021 22:58

I prefer the ones you mix with milk.

But if on holiday for example buy the instant, add hot water and then top it off with a dash of cold milk.

Stickyblue1987 · 14/10/2021 23:04

I always do 50:50 milk and water and squirty cream and marshmallows. I mix it regardless of what it says on the instructions. Dc love it.

A few squares of decent chocolate in a small pan of milk. When the chocolate melts give it a good whisk. Delicious.

MsChatterbox · 14/10/2021 23:36

Milk. But not powder. Just a few chocolate squares. So good!

GotToGoBye · 14/10/2021 23:39

Milk and I’m a full milk porridge person too if anyone is interested Smile

Kljnmw3459 · 14/10/2021 23:41

Water with a splash of cold milk. It's not as good as a milky one obviously but quicker to make.

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 14/10/2021 23:44

The reason the package says to mix with water is so that they can keep the GDA's / Traffic light nutritional information as low / healthy as they can. Milk has naturally occurring sugar / carbs in it which will make the 'as prepared' Nutritional info a lot higher than if it was prepared with water.

Always mix it with milk. It tastes so much better whether or not it's made with milk powder, and I can assure as someone with industry knowledge that no one actually thinks it tastes good mixed with water. That's only done to get it through a nutritional loophole

Same!
greenlynx · 14/10/2021 23:57

Milk. Hot chocolate is basically chocolate which just happens to be in hot liquid state. Water doesn’t belong to chocolate, milk does.

XenoBitch · 15/10/2021 00:00

Hot chocolate is a relaxing bedtime drink to me... so needs to be made with hot milk.

NotMyCat · 15/10/2021 00:40

Milk
Spanish hot chocolate is the best but the options white chocolate isn't too bad if made with milk (v sweet though)

MerryMarigold · 15/10/2021 04:35

Don't you know the 'special technique's? Hot choc goes in first (options Belgian choc is good) then you add approx double the milk you would for a cup of tea. Mix it around with a teaspoon. Pour hot water on. Voila you have frothy, milky got chocolate without having to heat up milk!

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 15/10/2021 07:00

Water, I don't like milk

PaperMonster · 15/10/2021 07:08

I make it with a bit of boiling water to dissolve the powder, then top up with hot milk.

My SIL thinks I’m crazy making it like that as it makes it more calorific!!

GoodnightGrandma · 15/10/2021 07:08

I do whatever it says on the instructions.
If your kids like hot chocolate you must get them a Velvetiser.

Blackmagicqueen · 15/10/2021 07:29

Does anyone know if you can use normal chocolate grated in a velvetiser or do you have to use a costly premade one?

SoupDragon · 15/10/2021 07:31

I've seen people say that they grate chocolate.
BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 15/10/2021 07:32

I always have it with milk - usually hotel chocolat in the velvetiser.

DH still makes himself a Cadbury one eith water...

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 15/10/2021 07:33

You can use grated choc or other hot chocolate brands in the velvetiser

SoupDragon · 15/10/2021 07:34

You can also use Biscoff spread in a Velvetiser.

I imagine you can also use Nutella but DD has eaten all of that.
