Following on from the ' have you met abs infamous criminal' thread. Has anyone met a celebrity (bonus points for really famous) and were they nice?

Goodmum1234
I can vouch for the fact Mary Berry is not the lovely person she likes us to think she is. At a book signing a fellow polio sufferer, but who was wheelchair bound and not too well, who used to praise her to the skies, wanted her to sign a book.

She had picked up from a pile...not realising she had to pay for it before a signature, not after. So MB was snotty, rude and refused to sign it. Made the lady [friends mother] feel like a shoplifter. Vile character.

SickAndTiredAgain · 14/10/2021 14:34

Philip and Tina Green. Him, alright. Her, acts like she truly believes she's the most desirable woman on the planet.

I know “alright” isn’t exactly glowing praise, but I find it hard to believe he is anything other than awful.

Stargazingharbor · 14/10/2021 14:38

Norman Reedus from the walking dead
Jeffery Dean Morgan...

I've met Norman twice.. both really nice guys.

NearLifeExperience · 14/10/2021 14:40

I’ve been lucky with mine...

Ray Winstone - very lovely
Michael sheen - very lovely
Jack Wild - very lovely
Marti Pellow (just as he was getting famous) - generous and great fun, but did rather like himself. Mostly lovely.

Wishimaywishimight · 14/10/2021 14:42

Dennis Hopper - he said "hi there". He definitely had "presence"!

TwinsandTrifle · 14/10/2021 14:42

I suppose what I meant by "alright" was he was really nondescript. Nothing interesting to say. Laughed too loudly at everything. He just sort of agreed with everyone, had no real opinions, and contributed very little to the evening. He was alright, you wouldn't have noticed too much if he wasn't there. The whole presence of them as a couple was her. This odd look that never really changed, of "I'm so very fabulous, I know you're all thinking it, and of course, you're right, just look at me". She was just vulgar in every sense. And not an attractive woman at all.

Indigomint · 14/10/2021 14:51

Many years ago I used to live near Ian McKellen.

When I was walking my child to primary school I felt something brush past my head , it was Ian Mckellen's hat that had blown off of his head on a very windy day and got me in the process. I looked across the road to see him walking towards me smiling and apologising. It was so random I just laughed and waved that I was fine.

He was always stopping and chatting to everyone in the queue at the local shop and popping down to the local schools and youth clubs to support the community. He's a nice guy I think.

timetochangeagainforever · 14/10/2021 14:52

Known Boy George since I was 15 as I'm close friends with his sister and our daughters have been brought up together - 8mths apart and at 21 and 22 they're still very close. He's lovely, obviously had his demons to deal with but been clean and sober many years now. I was out with him in Kensington last year and no one approached him. He was without makeup and dressed down, we did his weekly shop in the organic supermarket! He stays close to his roots and adores his family. My friend has worked for him all her adult life as do two of his brothers. Very down to earth. House is bloody amazing!

Indigomint · 14/10/2021 14:55

Oh and I can confirm that David Walliams isn't very friendly. He visited my place of work to promote one of his books a few years ago. He only spoke to us or the pupils while the camera was rolling and left as soon as he was able to.

LarryTheLurker · 14/10/2021 14:59

Richard Branson, work-related. Charming, relaxed, no airs and graces. Dodgy teeth, though.

alligatorpeardrop · 14/10/2021 15:03

Alexa Chung was so lovely to me, met her in a pub about 13 years ago, she had zero pretence, totally normal girl.

StevieNix · 14/10/2021 15:18

Hugh grant- was actually lovely, quite shy almost but I was expecting him to be a grumpy sod for some reason but he was very charming. I have a feeling it depends what mood he’s is/when you catch him

Colin Firth- taller than I expected, really attractive in the flesh and had a very suave demeanour. Was polite and kind although very quiet

Claire Sweeney- a complete and utter nightmare, horrible, extremely stuck up did the whole ‘don’t you know who I am’ thing to one of my colleagues who to my delight didn’t have a clue and also didn’t care!

Jeremy Irons- lovely! But has an intimidating
vibe although was very polite and charming.

Barbra Windsor- absolutely tiny, did her glorious laugh and was quiet but lovely!

Anthony steward-head- as everyone else always says he is very kind and polite. Seemed genuinely interested in other people and not at all fake.

John partridge- came across as quite shy surprisingly but was very nice

Brian May- the nicest man! I was a youngish teenager and he was so kind and took the time to talk to me and was genuinely interested in what I had to say. He was more than happy to take a photo with us and also asked if he could take a photo with us himself to put on his blog- which he did!

Auroreforet · 14/10/2021 15:24

Sue Pollard is a lovely person. I saw her in Pirates of Penzance. It was a matinee and I took dd to the stage door afterwards.
Gary Wilmot and Michael Starke said hello but obviously wanted to go for a break before the evening performance.
Sue Pollard spent time chatting and someone walking past shouted
Hi de Hi and although she hates it she shouted Ho de Ho back all cheerily.
She is what a celebrity should be.

Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee stood in the freezing cold chatting after his magic show 30 years ago.

Rather like the op who met Mary Berry I had a similar encounter with Michael Bond the Paddington bear author.
He was at an event promoting all things for dc about 33 years ago. I bought a book and took it to be signed . Said it’s for my ds. He took it from me, scribbled his signature without speaking to or looking at me. A grumpy old git!
I still love the stories though.

Met Prince Philip when dd got her gold d of e award.
He was easily late 80’s. Sharp as a tack and lovely to all the teens.

Auroreforet · 14/10/2021 15:26

Forgot to say. David Sedaris. Totally different experience of a book signing. He’s genuinely interested in people and so charming.
There had been a stabbing in our town that day and he asked if I’d ever been stabbed.

Amandasummers · 14/10/2021 15:33

I’ve been to Bradley walsh’ house whilst he was having a family party, he was lovely, asked if I wanted a drink, told me to join in and make myself at home 🤣

StevieNix · 14/10/2021 15:35

O and Bradley from SClub 7 asked me and my friends in a nightclub (where he was doing an appearance on a uni freshers week event) if I knew where to get him some cocaine from…
As a big

StevieNix · 14/10/2021 15:40

*as a big sclub fan as a kid it rather disappointed me for some reason!

SirenSays · 14/10/2021 15:47

I actively avoid celebrities, I'd never ask for a selfie or anything, I just couldn't.
I have seen Rihanna in a jewellery store. I walked past Joe Dempsie at a train station. As teenagers we ran away from the dirty sanchez boys who were drunk trying to talk to us. I've seen plenty of actors from This is England. My friend once had one of the old Hollyoaks cast start a fight with him in a club.

TheChosenTwo · 14/10/2021 15:56

@Auroreforet that’s a conversation starter and a half Grin

Petja · 14/10/2021 17:35

I was lucky enough to meet Whitney Houston and her husband Bobby brown. We were staying in the same hotel as them.
They made time for every person who stopped and asked for their autographs. Bobby even took the pictures for some fans.
Lovely lovely lady and such a shame she is no longer with us.

Sweetcheeks21 · 14/10/2021 17:35

Pierce Brosnan and Michael J Fox. Both absolutely lovely.

doglikescheeseontoast · 14/10/2021 17:41

Gloria Hunniford - vile, rude, very 'don't you know who I am?'

Dawn French, ditto.

JustDoingMe · 14/10/2021 17:49

The Queen & Prince Phillip, they were very nice (is that famous enough?), the school choir I use to run sang at the opening of a new university building in my area and they were the guests of honour.
Stevie Wonder and Brian May on the same night in a night club. Brian was nicer than Stevie and danced with us, Stevie was surrounded by bodyguards so apart from saying "hi" no other contact was made.
Freddie Jackson at an Alexander O'Neal concert (am I showing my age)one of my friends spotted him in the audience and he was very friendly and gracious.
Sat next to Terrence Stamp at a theatre in East London, he smiled at my sister and I when we he realised we clocked him and we smiled back - did not want to disturb his evening out.

Bebethany · 14/10/2021 17:51

I used to be a florist and pro gardener in a very nice part of north London and I’ve served loads of celebs in my shop! Most were utterly charming and very ‘primary’. However there was one Mr R Sewell who used to ask for flowers to be put into his house for when he returned after filming etc. Ran up a bill, I had a desire to change career and over 20 years later, he still owes me money! 🤬🤬

Lincslady53 · 14/10/2021 17:56

@OneHourPhotos

When I worked for a camera shop one of our customers was Timmy Mallett. His camera had broken and he needed it fixed, we didn't fix them in store so we warned him it could take months for the repairs to be carried out, he still agreed to have his camera sent off. But then returned almost daily chasing it, despite us pointing out we had absolutely no way of speeding it up.

I do remember him being annoyed that one of my (younger) colleagues didn't know his name, and we got a good laugh out of the fact his ring tone was that awful Itsy Bitsy song (we wouldn't have been surprised if he was dialing himself either, as he had a good look around the store to see if the ringtone had got a reaction - I had to hide in the stock room to laugh)

I used to be jealous that we had him as a customer when a store a few doors down also had a regular celebrity customer, one who (at the time) was regarded as much nicer. Can't say I'm jealous anymore though, their customer was Rolf Harris.😱

Timmy Mallett was helped with his career as a painter by Rolf Harris. Timmy did a customer meet and greet in our art gallery 10 years ago. He was the daft Timmy Mallett with most customers, but as soon as someone showed serious interest in his art, he instantly switched to seriois artsist Timmy. In the course of business we also met Rolf Harris, Neil Buchanan, Doug Hyde and David Shepherd. We met the countries greatest footballer, Sir Tom Finney several times. All of them were very pleasant, but Sir Tom was a true gent. A lovely man.
