Following on from the ' have you met abs infamous criminal' thread. Has anyone met a celebrity (bonus points for really famous) and were they nice?

@Gonegrey31

I was with a wealthy friend when he was buying something from an upmarket jewellers in Venice a couple of years ago . The owner ( who knew my friend very well) asked him discreetly about a new British customer who had commissioned some jewellery- did my friend think she was a sound customer? All he knew her was as Miss Jo, very quiet and low key , very polite and he thought she was possibly a writer. My friend was able to reassure the owner that Miss Jo was likely to be able to settle her bill without difficulty, having worked out who the writer was ….
Whos Miss Jo...?!

If I were a celebrity I would definitely be grumpy and aloof (although I’m actually quite nice and friendly) I wouldn’t be able to stand being bothered. So it’s a good job I’m not famous and likely never will be Grin

Liam Gallagher- lovely and totally different than he portraits himself on TV.
Also I met Cheryl Cole when she was about a week in the Girls Aloud ( 2002) She seemed perfectly normal, friendly young girl.

I met Jimmy Saville when I was a child. I thought he was ace (at the time).

I have also met Dame Kelly Holmes. I told her where the ladies toilets were.

butterflyze · 13/10/2021 13:57

Mel C, she was absolutely lovely.

DC once met Ainsley Harriott in the street, he was really nice too.

DandyHighwayWoman · 13/10/2021 13:59

Anthony Armstrong Jones at an Exhibition incredibly charismatic and twinkly.

BearSoFair · 13/10/2021 14:04

Gwendoline Christie - stunning, lovely, and laughs just as infectiously loud in person as she does in interviews Grin

Billy Bragg - also lovely, offered to buy coffees for a few of us as we'd been standing out in the cold for an hour

Arthur Darvill - seemed quite shy, but was lovely to DS1 (aged about 10 at the time) and signed a photo as both Arthur and Rory Williams, his Doctor Who character.

Sean Pertwee - very grumpy because his contact lenses were irritating his eyes! Saw him again the following day when he had glasses and he seemed much happier.

Yeah, quite a few.

Joe Lycett, utterly adorable.
Boy George, nice enough.
Sarah Millican and Gary Delaney - both utterly lovely, friendly, genuine people who like to help others. Wonderful couple.
Katherine Ryan - very, very sweet.
Jake Wood - really very kind and has a lovely family.
Jonathon Ross - quiet and a bit sullen (but only ever saw him on a Sunday morning so fair enough).
Ian McKellen: set my spidey senses on edge. Not genuine at all. One of my heros until I met him.

TeeBee · 13/10/2021 14:19

....oh and many premier league footballers. Mostly entitled, overgrown toddlers but with a few nice exceptions.

AnotherName456 · 13/10/2021 14:21

I met Martin Freeman when I worked in a toy shop when I was 16. He asked me to help him pick out some presents for his niece and nephew. I picked them out and gift wrapped them for him. He was absolutely lovely.

idontlikealdi · 13/10/2021 14:22

I met JS a few times as a child (aged around 11-13) as he was doing some fundraising events for a charity my father ran. I remember very clearly (and this is not a retrospective assessment) that he didn’t really like children, that he was odd and not sincere and that I couldn’t get away from him fast enough. My father loathed him and was deeply suspicious of him (he later told me) but it was in the 1970s and difficult to put one’s finger on what was so uncomfortable about him. He kind of steamrollered people. My father had come across him in the 1960s when my DF was living in Leeds, when the universal instruction to young girls in his locale was to “keep away from that odd man” without any real explanation as to why.

My father died in March and my mother has been going through all their many books. When she found JS’s autobiography in which he’d written a dedication to me and by DB she took the book outside at arms length and burned it on the bonfire.

I've met lots of 80's pop stars-Tony Hadley, John Keeble and Steve Norman from Spandau, Martin Fry (ABC), Peter and Richard from Go West and Mark Shaw (Then Jericho), all very lovely.

Maeve Binchy, Bill Bryson, Jilly Cooper and Ian Rankin at book signings. Again, all lovely.

Mrsjayy · 13/10/2021 16:31

Sir Ian McKellen an absolute delight !.

Great to hear that, I was a big fan.
FlorrieLindley · 13/10/2021 16:48

I worked in tv for many years from the 70s to the 00s. So I met many famous people in a professional capacity. I'll mention the lovely ones:
Julian Clary - sweet, slightly shy
Ant and Dec - small, smiley, friendly
Letitia Dean - small, pretty, friendly
Richard Madeley - surprisingly good looking and tall, nice enough.
Richard Attenbourgh - small, jolly, enthusiastic
Billy Connolly - charismatic, very, very funny
I could go on.

DappledThings · 13/10/2021 16:56

David Tennant. At the height of his Doctor Who fame his mate Arabella Weir asked him to do a meet and greet at her kids' school fair as she was on the PTA. My aunt was also on the PTA and as I had been babysitting my cousins the night before I went along to help sell photos of him for him to sign. He was clearly delighted to speak to each and every child and to be doing a favour for a friend.

peaceanddove · 13/10/2021 17:00

Just remembered another one:

My Grandpa served out in India during WWII. Sir John Gielgud transferred through my GP's base and my GP was tasked with escorting him. He said SJG was an absolute git to deal with and sexually harassed several young officers.

20NameChange21 · 13/10/2021 17:08

Ainsley Harrett - lovely tipped me £5 for putting a Danish in a microwave
The Queen - lovely
Ross Kemp - very funny, and signed a friends egg. Sat and had a drink with us in the pub we were in
Gordon Ramsey - asked me out for a drink, although it wasn’t in ‘that’ way!
Idris Elba - has a country house in my village, although I haven’t met him but have been in the chippy with David Beckham as their country house is nearish to where I live.

DH laid the lawns at Windsor Castle, was seeding David Cameron’s lawn at his home address the day he became PM and was part of a gold medal winning team at Chelsea. His car was also at the premier of one of the fast and furious films (driven by him) and he has also met Katie Price in her Jordan days - said she was horrible!

I know I have loads more but can’t think of them off the top of my head.

I’ve changed name for this as obviously my friends know the stories and I don’t want them seeing other posts.

ClawedButler · 13/10/2021 17:10

Does Justin Fletcher count as a celeb? He is bloody hilarious and really good company.
