Also agree with The Way, Way Back. Such a great cast and hated Steve Carell in it so he must have acted well.
Hunt for The Wilderpeople is an excellent film too.

Just watched Pride on the back of the recommendations on here and really enjoyed it. I never knew about this side of the miners strike so it was good to see.

A Good Year. Stars Russell Crowe as a banker who inherits his uncle's vineyard. Really nice film.

WhereYouLeftIt · 03/10/2021 23:58

So I Married An Axe Murderer.
About Time.

Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter

Gingernaut · 04/10/2021 00:21

The Milagro Beanfield War
Priscilla Queen of the Desert

ichifanny · 04/10/2021 06:19

Stardust .. just the most joyful film ever

nofanks · 04/10/2021 06:29

A lot of people have recommended Hunt for the Wilderpeople. If you like this, I'd also highly recommend these other NZ films by the same director:

Boy
What we do in the shadows

Also some Australian classics:

The Castle
Strictly Ballroom
Muriel's Wedding

Disfordarkchocolate · 04/10/2021 08:39

Big Game. Set in Finland.

Wonderful.

dementedma · 04/10/2021 08:43

Saving Grace is my go to when I want a laugh. Brilliant

echt · 04/10/2021 09:17

Dean Spanley. Utterly moving.

Sightseers. Grim and funny.

Kill List. Grim and not funny.

the80sweregreat · 04/10/2021 09:37

Keeping mum is funny
Same with Sightseers.

BarbaraofSeville · 04/10/2021 10:01

YY to Three Billboards.

A recent thread about Minnie Driver revealed that a few people hadn't seen Grosse Point Blank, which would be my recommendation. Great soundtrack too.

NoviceNewMN · 04/10/2021 12:26

This is obscure but if you don't mind subtitles/ like a foreign B& W film, this is very funny

The Groom From London
Anglised: Gabros ap' to Londino
Cut & Paste Greek Title: Γαμπρός απ' το Λονδίνο

www.imdb.com/title/tt0136211/

It's quite difficult to find - I saw a DVD copy a friend had.

It's really funny. It's a romantic comedy about a Greek young woman whose British bf leaves her, and for various reasons the hero (a Greek man who speaks no English) agrees to pretend to be her English Bf.

This is a clip in which he has told her younger brother that he goes to lots of nightclubs in London and is trying to demonstrate the current British nightclub dancing style (He's never even been to London) and he finds his ID card and realises he is not British at all.

Some of the funniest scenes are when he is pretending to speak English.

Empire of the sun, as well.

Baby Christian Bale at his finest!

About a family of ex-pats living in China at the outbreak of WW2. The Japanese invade and the son gets separated from his parents and it’s about his time in internment camps.

It’s not scary or graphic, a good family film and beautifully done.

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 04/10/2021 12:35

Glory

Or for a comedy Finding Mum

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 04/10/2021 12:36

No apologies it's Keeping Mum - I'm a shocker for remembering film titles properly Blush

RampantIvy · 04/10/2021 12:40

I loved Empire of the Sun. I wept buckets at the end.

I also loved the Marcel Pagnol movies:
Jean de Florette
Manon des Sources

and the films based on his childhood:
La Gloire de mon Pere
Le chateau de ma Mere

So atmospheric and beautifully shot.

Xiaoxiong · 04/10/2021 13:13

@CatNamedEaster I have so many quotes from the Castle, I love that film so much!!

That's going straight to the pool room!
You're an ideas man
Whaddya call this?! (when we sit down for dinner)...yeah but what did you DO to it?
You ought to open a shop!
Whaddya think...add a bit of value?!
It's just...the vibe
How's the serenity (when something hideously noisy is going on)

And of course the best one that we chant in the car..."We're going to Bonny Doon...we're going to Bonny Doon..."

LadyofMisrule · 04/10/2021 13:36

Lord of Misrule. (This one www.imdb.com/title/tt0136374/ )

Needhelp101 · 04/10/2021 13:41
