OP posts:

Safety not guaranteed, slow burner, but love it.

boobot1 · 05/10/2021 22:36

Somewhere in time

EarringsandLipstick · 05/10/2021 22:40

Oh, another one I just came across recently ... Tully. I loved this. Charlize Theron stars.

Ispini · 05/10/2021 22:43

A Room with a View.

MerylSqueak · 05/10/2021 22:49

Lawless Heart with Douglas Henshall. A very simple story told four times from different viewpoints. It's not glam but I love it.

Hear my Song -true romance

Secretary - I ll just leave that there

DH and DS. saw this a few years ago and have raved about it ever since. I keep meaning to watch it, maybe I'll do so now someone else has recommended it!
melonhead · 06/10/2021 06:09

Goodbye Lenin is incredible

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/10/2021 06:35

Yes to Goodbye Lenin!

Room with a View.
Love it love it love it!
Someone mentioned The Painted Veil- truly awful interpretation of the original Maugham story. Pretentious and PC, IMO.

alloutofcareunits · 06/10/2021 08:22

@zukiecat I'm sure it's on Netflix or Amazon prime too as I've watched it a few times now. I also really enjoyed Herself at the cinema a few weeks ago, definitely worth a watch!

Laughingravy · 06/10/2021 12:13

Pierrepoint - Starring Timothy Spall as our most prolific hangman. Not an easy watch but so moving.
Went the Day Well - arguably our finest WW2 film. A troop of German invaders are fought off by the residents of a Norfolk village.
Father Goose - Cary Grant's penultimate film. Totally schmaltzy but perfect rainy Sunday afternoon viewing.
Duke of Burgundy - A love story with an adult twist. Beautifully shot and the perfect antidote to 50 Shades
Russian Ark - I listed this in the Foreign films thread. A walk through Russian history, shot in one take through the Winter Palace.

colouringindoors · 06/10/2021 20:18

Duke of Burgundy film trailer is tantalising!

WarmSausageTea · 06/10/2021 21:08

Another vote for Pride.
Lion.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

tempchecked · 06/10/2021 21:09

"Talk To Her" director Pedro Almodovar. I found it mesmerising.

colouringindoors · 07/10/2021 22:13

I just watched

The Immigrant.

Not cheerful as such, but fascinating portratal of the reality of arriving in the US in 1921 as a young female immigrant. And the power of love for your sister.

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 10/10/2021 16:36

Y Tu Mama Tambien is an excellent Almodovar film about a road trip in Latin America. Beautiful film.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople as PPs have said is fabulous. Also Peanut Butter Falcon, Into The Wild, and Holes.

StCharlotte · 10/10/2021 18:31

I watched Everyone's Talking About Jamie earlier (Amazon) and loved it. It brought to mind Kinky Boots which was also fun.

I wouldn't have said Empire of the Sun was a family film. I found it incredibly upsetting.

Secretary was just bloody weird!

StCharlotte · 10/10/2021 18:32

Agreed - I love that film.

keepmoving · 10/10/2021 18:38

We loved Chef (had to pay on Prime grr) but actually worth it. DS13 through to DH who's 56...

A Room with a View.
Great film, seen it many times over the years. I first read the book when I was a teenager.
fussychica · 10/10/2021 18:40

These just came to mind

The Castle
The Dressmaker
Hunt for the Wilderpeople
Whiplash
That thing you do
Palm Springs
Land of Mine

Not sure they are particularly hidden but a bit quirky rather than mainstream.

Boriswentcamping · 10/10/2021 18:45

Hunt for the wilder people - another vote!

Pretty much anything by Wes Anderson

What we do in the shadows

Chef is such an uplifting film. I've watched it about 5 times now and still love it.

The Dressmaker is also an excellent film. I wasn't expecting much from it, but I should have known from the cast it was going to be worth it.

freshcarnation · 14/10/2021 07:13

36 Hours. A war film.

Camandmitch · 16/10/2021 15:39

I've found some excellent films on here. My contribution is Yesterday
