Oops i mean cary grant!

Anoisagusaris · 03/10/2021 20:33

Definitely The Commitments (fabulous music), The Snapper and the Van. Most Irish people (of a certain vintage perhaps?) can quote them endlessly.
Educating Rita
Shirley Valentine (probable not that ‘hidden’)
Heavenly Creatures

An Australian film called Malcolm. I seem to remember it was very funny.

CleopatrasBeautifulNose · 03/10/2021 20:36

The Fisher King. Robin Williams in it, such a beautiful film, amazingly sensitive and human, a love story in many senses of the word. Haven't seen it in ages, want to see it again now. 😍

StorminaBcup · 03/10/2021 20:37

Also Rear Window (the original Hitchcock one) and Fargo (Cohen Brothers one).

I’ll have to hide this thread - feel like I’m spamming it now Grin. There’s just so many good films!

Like Dandelion Dust/Dandelion dust.

It makes me SOB. About a little boy who was given up for adoption as a baby. He is settled in with his adoptive parents when his bio dad is released from prison and it comes to light that his bio mum forged the documents.

A truly gut wrenching yet feel good movie.

Milomonster · 03/10/2021 20:39

In the Mood for Love. No film tips this one for me.

Yourstupidityexhaustsme · 03/10/2021 20:40

Oranges and Sunshine.

About a social worker in the 90’s who first starts to uncover the human trafficking from Irish orphanages to Australia. A really beautiful film. The main actress is brilliant and really well known but her name escapes me.

Yourstupidityexhaustsme · 03/10/2021 20:41
@summerhouse you might also Jojo Rabbit if you haven’t already seen it. Great film, funny but very dark. And I’d also recommend Sound of Metal and Nomadland (Frances McDormand again if you like her).
Jojo rabbit is phenomenal.

Actually quite harrowing in hindsight it played on my mind for weeks. The little boy is really going places.

The Dry

Not a hidden gem but I love Rear Window! This afternoon I watched

flibbertygibb · 03/10/2021 20:43

Posted too soon. I watched Mrs Miniver, perfect for a Sunday afternoon

covilha · 03/10/2021 20:44

My life as a dog
Anything with DDLewis, except the last movie about courture because of the bizarre relationship
Anything with Katherine Hepburn
And, as so many have said … HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE. I even have the soundtrack. And best car chase scene ever! Grin

Lesina · 03/10/2021 20:50
@Lesina I came on to say that. One of my all time favourite films that few people seem to have heard of
@pickledprincess… an absolute gem of a movie. Watched it 7 times when it came out. Love it.

Comedycook · 03/10/2021 20:53

Bicentennial man

NigellaSeed · 03/10/2021 20:54

The assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert ford. It's pretty mainstream but more people should see it, everything about it is a feast for the senses.

SuperStarRose · 03/10/2021 20:54

Whale rider

dementedma · 03/10/2021 20:57

Children of a Lesser God

Hidden Figures was on Film 4 last night. I watched it again.
Ghost is one of my all time favourites.
The funniest film, for me, is Some like it Hot. (Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe).
The Help.

pickledprincess · 03/10/2021 20:58

@Lesina I need to watch it again tomorrow!Smile
