on the phone to the garage mechanic who has just done my MOT when he phoned to tell me when to get the car.

Why? Why did I do that ? he will think I am mad won't he? He already thinks I'm odd because my mileage is so low because I just pop to the shops and back in the car.

My DD was in the hallway and overheard me and was wetting herself.

Every day I find new ways to embarrass myself. Grin

I said "Does anyone need a wee?" before I locked the door - to the builders on our extension.

antoniawhite · 29/09/2021 20:36

I was once put on hold and thought therefore nobody could hear me. ‘Jesus, what’s happening to him?’ I shouted to my DH, quickly followed by ‘Oh, it’s ok, he’s just having a crap.’ This was DS1 straining with his nappy. That must have been a lovely moment for the telephone engineer.

meadowbleu · 29/09/2021 20:38

When I said goodnight to DH last night he sleepily said 'love you, miss you' and I had to tell him 'you do know I'm going to be lying here all night?' He had the DCs on his mind.

AudTheDeepMinded · 29/09/2021 20:39

I once thanked a male check out assistant in the supermarket with 'You're a really useful engine!'

(mother of three train obsessed sons)

GrandmasCat · 29/09/2021 20:40

My partner said exactly that to another man who was a new client! He still can’t believe he did even when I heard it loud and clear.

Stubbornly believing it didn’t happen has saved him from the embarrassment Grin

Hungry675tf · 29/09/2021 20:44

At work one day i was walking down the corridor and a bloke was behind me. I held two doors open for him so he could follow behind me, as you do. I did the same with the last door - and realised too late that I was essentially beckoning him to follow me into the ladies toilets. He looked TERRIFIED and quickly scuttled off to the mens toilets next door 😳

Bluntness100 · 29/09/2021 20:45

I’d an employee do it. At the end of our call he said bye, love you. 😂

I suspect lots of people have done it snd don’t realise.
I have kisses at the end of work texts too a couple of times, from men I know are really not coming on to me.

Although one I knew well enough that I texted back “you hitting on me then” and he was mortified. 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Upwiththisiwillnotput · 29/09/2021 20:45

When ordering a Chinese takeaway, I finished the call by saying ‘love you, bye!’
To be fair it was a very good Chinese. Sadly they’ve closed now so I hope they know they were loved!

Moonwatcher1234 · 29/09/2021 20:48

My son’s teacher has a strong northern accent. Mine is a fairly standard London accent. At the end of a conversation about how well he was doing I said, in the broadest northern accent “but as long as he’s happy that’s the main thing”. I instantly went bright red and was thinking why did I just do that?? She smiled politely and moved on. Still don’t know what happened and have never done it since with northern or any other accent.

evtheria · 29/09/2021 20:49

@user1493494961
It’s such a small thing but I laughed aloud at that. It reminds me of another person who absentmindedly told an adult stranger ‘hold my hand’ before crossing.

APJ1 · 29/09/2021 20:51

I made a fuss of the dog and as I went to walk away I said "Goodbye gorgeous boy!"
I said to Mum that I hoped the man knew I was referring to the dog!!!

I always like to imagine that the "Hello, aren't you gorgeous??" type comments I get when out walking my dog are for me! Grin

thepastisanothercountry · 29/09/2021 20:51
Smile

I once sent DS's year one teacher a rambling email about a problem he was having with another boy and somehow ended it with : "Love you loads, can't wait to see you later on, have a brilliant day xxx

DP who I was writing an email to in another window got "Kind regards"

tedsletterofthelaw · 29/09/2021 20:52

I said "Good girl" to a client at work once.

Could have died

NewlyGranny · 29/09/2021 20:53

At home, making a work call to a new (to me) primary school, setting up a first meeting with the Head through the admin person. I hung up and DH said, "You know you just said "Love you," to that person?! 🤦🏼‍♀️

BusySittingDown · 29/09/2021 20:57

My friend from Uni did this to me Grin. We were newish friends so weren't quite at the "love ya" stage like some friends are. She'd forgotten that she wasn't on the phone to her boyfriend and said "ok, love you. Bye!" I was laughing as we hung up. She texted me with an OMG, I didn't mean to say I love you! I was like, it's ok I love you too 😂.

It could be worse OP. I used to work at an insurance company and my colleague was on the phone to a man making a claim. She had put him on hold while she put everything through. While he was on hold she could hear him talking to someone saying "oh man! This is taking ages, I was hoping to go home and get a quick shag in my dinner break. I'm not going to make it now! Oh crap, I hope this woman can't hear me..." my colleague took him off hold and said "yep, heard every word!" She couldn't stop laughing.

RaptorOnATractor · 29/09/2021 20:59

I've told the pizza takeaway man that I love him a few times when ordering food. While it wasn't what I meant to say, it's true.

Adha · 29/09/2021 21:00

Love it and thank you 🙏

Lifeisbeautiful01 · 29/09/2021 21:00

I’ve said this on the phone to clients! I also once shouted “look at the gee gees” to a group of 6th formers on a coach when my girls were little!

Loubiemoo · 29/09/2021 21:02

@Mumoblue

I once asked a friend of mine if she “needs a wee-wee” before we went out.

I was working in a nursery at the time, and also looking after my younger brother, so my brain was just in kid-mode.

These things do happen, but it’s always a little mortifying! Grin

I used to work in a nursery. When I moved to retail work, the first demanding customer got asked “and what do we say….?” They did actually reply “please” Grin Grin
ClemDanFango · 29/09/2021 21:09

Said it to my sons head of year on the phone was meant to say; “ok lovely, thanks” and instead said; “ok love you, thanks” she kind of went “errr, ok bye.” Still cringing 5 years later.

Daisy829 · 29/09/2021 21:10

Love this!
My dog was on the park & decided to wee on the bag of footballs that the team had left in the side. Embarrassing enough until i said to the guy “oh no he’s going to pee on your balls”. I couldn’t stop sniggering to myself

Bollindger · 29/09/2021 21:11

I once said see you tomorrow Dad, love you loads. to the Managing Director of a Multi-million pound firm.
He turned up for the meeting he had arranged with my boss, with flowers, chocolates and a box of cream cakes.
Seems his daughter had died a year before and he was touched to hear the words , love you dad.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 29/09/2021 21:11

I think it's quite normal. I hope anyway...

One thing I have noticed several times is that colleagues who are mums of small children will put their hand out for/take anything that's vaguely waved in their direction while carrying on with a conversation with somebody else. I presume it's some reflex from having toddlers who like to thrust sticks/duplo/half-eaten biscuits at you. I only realised the link when I got a clearly automatic "thank you darling" after passing a somebody a stapler (she did want it, but was talking to somebody else when I came back with it). Grin

CharityDingle · 29/09/2021 21:12

I will say it (inwardly) to the mechanic in my garage if he can sort out my car!

thepastisanothercountry · 29/09/2021 21:14

I've just remembered.

When dd was 3 or 4 she was really acting up in the supermarket and eventually I lost all patience, grabbed her hand and said very firmly

"That's it, I've had enough of this we're going home right now and no sweeties"

Only it wasn't her hand... she'd moved too quickly for that

The 30 something lady whose hand I'd just grabbed looked terrified - DD on the other hand was giggling by the ice cream freezers
