Anyone follow the coverage of the Sarah Everard case today and want to vent?

I'm home alone today and except for whatsapping my friends have nothing to do with this incandescent rage and hopeless sadness.

Anyone else need to talk? Sad

@onlychildhamster

I am a Londoner and I have never been in the situation where I was stopped by a police officer. But if I am stopped by a police officer and he was alone, I would never trust him alone and I would call the police station to ask them to send backup (preferably female).

They might think I am nuts, but I would rather be nuts than raped and killed.

I doubt they would think you were nuts in light of this case. Agree, I think if I was approached by a lone officer, I would now ask for another one to arrive before going anywhere with them. Wouldn’t have occurred to me to do so before this.
AdmiralCain · 30/09/2021 11:29

@pelosi That's what I meant, but even at sentencing he has to try his very best to get him the most favourable sentence or there could be come backs

pelosi · 30/09/2021 11:30

@AdmiralCain agreed, sorry.

FlorenceWintle · 30/09/2021 11:30

@LakieLady

In the sentencing submission, the brief set out the kind of offences that might merit a whole-life term. He started off with

" "The murder of two or more persons, where each murder involves one of the following..."

Is this correct, ie that there has to be more than 1 victim for a whole-life tariff to apply?

If so, it bloody needs to change imo.

There have been some whole life sentences for single killers - the murderer of Jo Cox is one, also the murderer of April Jones. Some others. So there is precedent for it.
Rosehip10 · 30/09/2021 11:31

Whole life order starting point – the ‘exceptionally high' seriousness category
The starting point is a whole life order where the seriousness of the offence (or of the offence and other associated offences) is ‘exceptionally high’ and the defendant was aged 21 or over when the offence was committed. Cases that would normally fall into this category include: (a) the murder of two or more people where each murder involves a substantial degree of premeditation/planning, abduction of the victim, or sexual or sadistic conduct; (b) the murder of a child involving the abduction of the child or sexual or sadistic motivation; (c) murder committed to advance a political/religious/racial/ideological cause; (d) murder committed by a defendant with a previous conviction for murder.

Rosehip10 · 30/09/2021 11:32

So the above shows how the Jo Cox case and April Jones case got whole life tariffs.

Badgercity · 30/09/2021 11:32

The murderer of Georgia Williams also got a whole of life tariff, because he tricked her into his house to model for a photography project. That was the aggravating factor in the sentencing.

So the judge can and absolutely should give a whole of life tariff today.

If he was so full of self loathing why did he do normal stuff like ring the vet and go to Costa shortly after

I don’t believe it and I’m annoyed the QC is including it

LakieLady · 30/09/2021 11:35

Thank you, @FlorenceWintle

Sue Fish (previous chief constable for Nottinghamshire) on Sky News saying resisting arrest is an offence, but you should ask to see ID and ask them to call the control room in front of you.

It’s also reasonable to film the police and call someone to help you.

She was asked how often do police misuse their powers? Sue says it’s very common, we have a misogynistic police culture that attracts people like WC because of the power to be able to detain someone’s liberty from them. Officers mis-using their powers on a daily basis.

Says every force should adopt misogyny as a hate crime. Low level concerns should be reported, as they currently aren’t. Colleagues realised something wasn’t right but it wasn’t acknowledged, so a wilful blindness.

Whistle blowers are isolated and marginalised.

Thanks - that's really useful to know.

Not in the same ballpark as being arrested, but I had a lone male officer turn up to do a "safe and well" check at my house. After I confirmed I was both safe and well (through my window), I wouldn’t let him in, and I wouldn’t go outside to join him. I've got cPTSD, a strand of which stems from experiencing police violence.
He wouldn’t leave, and insisted I needed to meet him outside to confirm I was OK..

I ended up calling 999, and they got him to remove himself from my garden. No idea what would have happened if I'd not had my phone to hand.

AdmiralCain · 30/09/2021 11:38

@pelosi God there's no need to be sorry, we're all on this forum to support Sarah's family and hope justice is served, The guy who was on trial in devon last week for kicking a 28 week pregnant woman and causing her to loose the baby, the mother and kids murdered in Derbyshire, the world has gone mad and it has rattled me deeply and normally everything s water of a ducks back for me. The mood of the world is definitely dark lately

SuperStarRose · 30/09/2021 11:40

That image image of her standing on the roadside with her killer will haunt us all for years to come much like James Bulger being walked out of that Shopping centre between those two killer boys.

Wow! Well done her for speaking out.

As I understand it; anyone can ask the Attorney General to review a sentence for being too lenient.

Excellent article on the sentencing

SuperStarRose · 30/09/2021 11:47

DD is annoyed with me because I wondered if more witnesses would have come forward sooner and therefore bus CCTV checked sooner etc if the headlines hadn't been dominated by the Oprah 'Meghan and Harry' interview. She thinks I'm being ridiculous.

SunshineCake1 · 30/09/2021 11:48

Apparently he doesn't deserve to die in prison as there is worse things than rape and murder AngryShock.

Could he tell me what those things are then?
ChattyLion · 30/09/2021 11:50

That’s an excellent comment from Sue Fish. Thank you to her.

LakieLady · 30/09/2021 11:51

BBC news have just said that Cressida Dick is in court.

I presume that this is so she can come out afterwards and give all the ususal spiel about regrets, tragic loss, condolences to the family, having an inquiry, lessons will be learned etc.

And it's all bollocks and nothing will ever change.

Spudlet · 30/09/2021 11:52

That was an excellent and brave comment from Sue Fish.

Sue Fish was impressive on Ch4 News last night, too. It’s a shame she’s a retired Chief Constable and not a current one, from the depth of her knowledge and empathy.

Typical minimisation of crimes where women and girls are victims.

It's time crimes like this were treated as hate crimes, same as racial or religiously motivated murders. Because they are hate crimes. Men like Couzens hate women, and the culture in the Met has failed to address that.
