Is it chicken pox? I’m so upset

DD is 3 and due to be a flower girl at her aunties wedding at the weekend. She was at nursery with a boy with chicken pox 2 weeks ago exactly. She has the sniffles today and complained to stomachache at lunch. I’ve been Googling and it looks like she’s bang in the middle of the time when the spots might start to show.

She will be so so sad if she can’t go and I will miss my sisters wedding. I’m already feeling gutted and it’s not even definite that she’ll have caught it.

Can you tell me how your little ones first presented with chickenpox? Where did the spots first appear? I’m desperate to hear anything to indicate she might not have it.

My daughters spots appeared on her back initially.

Hungry675tf · 28/09/2021 18:51

Few spots on the stomach, then progressed. Sore tummy and sniffles sounds like something else tbh.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 28/09/2021 18:52

Mine had no symptoms and the first I knew were spots behind the ears and on the neck, then some on their back. Then everywhere!

Chest and neck for mine. She was getting over it when she was a flower girl for her auntie so had spots in the photos!

QforCucumber · 28/09/2021 18:53

Ds was 3 - it was 2 weeks before our wedding 🙈 2 little red spots on his back at bedtime, by morning there were about 9 across his back and torso

Whstdoyouthink · 28/09/2021 18:58

Can you book her for the vaccine tomorrow? Probably too late if she does have it but will prevent her getting it if she doesn’t

gogohm · 28/09/2021 18:59

The only symptoms mine had were the spots, certainly no sniffles.

Covidiom · 28/09/2021 19:00

@Whstdoyouthink apparently I would have needed to do this within 3 days of exposure and I found out too late

No symptoms other than developing almost see through spots on chest that then turned red and started to itch.
It does sound like some other bug. Fingers crossed for you all!

babycorn · 28/09/2021 19:04

A bit out of sorts the day or so before, spots appeared on back and torso bang on the two weeks after exposure... probably not what you want to hear!

Antinerak · 28/09/2021 19:04

It could just be a cold, but don't go if she has cold symptoms. (I'm not saying it's covid, but it's safer to not spread a cold around)

Check for spots on her tummy, back and behind ears. I noticed those and elbows, armpits and top of the bum spots first on my nephew. None of the kids I've looked after have had tummy problems with it though.

Peanutsandchilli · 28/09/2021 19:10

Sounds like typical September 'back to school' sniffles, tbh. Certainly not how my kids started with chicken pox. They just got spots on their tummies first, and weren't particularly ill.

DoucheCanoe · 28/09/2021 19:10

One of mine was a bit out of sorts for a few days then the spots appeared on his arms.

The other was absolutely fine, we got to nursery and I noticed a red spot on her neck so took her home. Glad we did as they started to spread rapidly down her torso and by the next morning she was covered!

Covidiom · 28/09/2021 19:10

She’s had a negative covid test. I’m absolutely going if it’s only a cold! I did notice some red spots (very pale) on the tops of her thighs at the front but that could just be her eczema

NigelSlatersXmasTaters · 28/09/2021 19:23

She's had a negative covid test already today? We've been waiting for results for 2 days!

The symptoms for positive family members were stomach and headaches and sniffles.

freshcarnation · 28/09/2021 19:23

If she was exposed 2 weeks ago I'd very much doubt it after all this time

NigelSlatersXmasTaters · 28/09/2021 19:23

"Can you book her for the vaccine tomorrow?"

The vaccine is 2 doses around 6 weeks apart

853ax · 28/09/2021 19:24

One had vomiting few days then spot appeared at first I thought it was from nappy.
Another got few spots I asked GP due to eczema was prescribed med did not get any more spotsb so I'm not sure if it was chicken pox or if the medicine prevented it from getting any worse.

SmellyOldOwls · 28/09/2021 19:25

Usually the spots come first, on the chest or back. Hopefully just a cold.

anonymousanne · 28/09/2021 19:31

My DD got chicken pox exactly 14 days after contact. We kept her and her cousin apart as we had a holiday booked (due to fly 12 hours after the first spots) but the incubation period is 2 weeks so she already had caught it.
The fist we saw was a few random spots, on her back, tummy and scalp. Within a few hours the spots were coming fast so it was obvious by then. She was only 6 months so didn't suffer too badly and don't remember any other symptoms than the spots and some irritability a few days in. Hope it's not so you can attend wedding 🤞

anonymousanne · 28/09/2021 19:32

The incubation period is approx 2 weeks with chicken pox
lljkk · 28/09/2021 19:37

Ah, 2 weeks ago exposure, yes, um...

Mine had spots at 2 weeks post exposure, though. I wouldn't give mere sniffles a 2nd thought.

blindmansbluff · 28/09/2021 19:45

Dead on two weeks for all of mine. DS caught them first then both DDs came out in spots 14 days later.

Whstdoyouthink · 28/09/2021 19:51

Fingers crossed it’s just a cold, there is so many of them at the moment

ShowOfHands · 28/09/2021 19:51

DD was exposed on the last day of nursery and came out with spots exactly 17 days later. She was off colour for 24hrs before the rash with a runny nose, fever and very grumpy. Spots appeared on her torso first and 2 days later, were everywhere.

DD was grumpy and lethargic for a couple of days, then developed a fever and then the spots appeared later the same day.
