Is it chicken pox? I’m so upset

DD is 3 and due to be a flower girl at her aunties wedding at the weekend. She was at nursery with a boy with chicken pox 2 weeks ago exactly. She has the sniffles today and complained to stomachache at lunch. I’ve been Googling and it looks like she’s bang in the middle of the time when the spots might start to show.

She will be so so sad if she can’t go and I will miss my sisters wedding. I’m already feeling gutted and it’s not even definite that she’ll have caught it.

Can you tell me how your little ones first presented with chickenpox? Where did the spots first appear? I’m desperate to hear anything to indicate she might not have it.

Definitely under the weather for 24 hours then one single large spot between his eyes - which I managed to accidentally burst washing his face, it’s created a massive scar. I took him to the GP at that point as I wanted to know if it was CP as my DM was immunosuppressed and needed to stay away if he was. Doctor said difficult to tell at that point but I’d know for definite tomorrow, the next morning he was covered in spots. And exactly 2 weeks later his brother came down with it….

MiloAndEddie · 28/09/2021 20:01

Mine wasn’t particularly ill beforehand. My DH literally phoned me one morning saying he’d noticed something behind DC1’s ear and lo and behold it was the first one. The next day it was very obvious it was CP.

Unfortunately DC2 came out in spots exactly 2 weeks after DC1’s first spot. They were more unwell but were younger.

But just to add weight to your hope it’s not CP, it went round the nursery 3 separate times before they caught it

TheFairyCaravan · 28/09/2021 20:07

I remember me and my friend both saying that our children had been “off” for a couple of days but not being able to put our fingers on why. The next day they both came out in the spots. The first one was on DS1’s stomach, by the time DH got home from work at lunchtime he was covered.

There were no warning signs, as such, with DS2, but obviously we were expecting it because of DS1 having had it.

I hope she doesn’t have it @Covidiom and I hope you both manage to get to the wedding.

Not many people know, but there’s a vaccine against chicken pox, for about £60 privately. Get it if getting chicken pox bothers you. Many countries have it as part of the childhood immunisation program.
You probably waste more the £60 taking sick leave looking after a poorly child and buying all the ailments oh and never mind looking after a very upset itchy child who might end up getting scars on their face.

DC2 had chickenpox when he was about 20 months. Was very grumpy the day before spots appeared, had a temperature and was off his food.

However, as soon as they appeared, he was pretty much back to his usual self. Je didn't have many but bizarrely, he only had one on his torso, most were on his legs and wrists. They all appeared at roughly the same time.

I wasn't actually sure it was chickenpox at first due to the strange spread and also the fact he had impetigo around his mouth at same time so thought it was HFM.

And also the fact that his older sister (and I, have never had them!) didn't catch them.

It was diagnosed by GP though!

thinkfast · 28/09/2021 20:11

My kids have been exposed to chicken pox at least 3 times. They've never come down with it. I kinda wish they'd had it already... get it out the way

starfish4 · 28/09/2021 20:13

I knew my DD had definitely been exposed, she'd been playing with another child who unknowingly had chicken pox breaking out, so I was on the lookout - first one appear behind her ears.

I caught is when I was 25 and very hot and achy beforehand, the first pox broke out on my forehead.

Shellfishblastard · 28/09/2021 20:13

Dd2 got it exactly 2 weeks after her sister - she was a bit out of sorts, more tired than usual, then the spots appeared on her neck and chest first.

You will know soon if it’s CP as once they start they soon appear everywhere!

But fingers crossed it’s only a cold and she is ok.

Wheelz46 · 28/09/2021 20:14

My eldest started with 1 spot behind his ear, no other symptoms. My youngest, started with a spot on his stomach with no other symptoms.

StripeyBadger · 28/09/2021 20:16

If it is the start of chickenpox, she will probably have spots all over by the weekend.

Duckypoohs · 28/09/2021 20:16

Can't remember where the spots where but my 2 eldest had it at the same time. The subsequent spots were quick to arrive. Hopefully it's not chicken pox, that would be so disappointing Sad

Itsbeen84yearss · 28/09/2021 20:17

We had like 6 weeks of chicken pox in this house. One child after another two weeks apart. The first one was very lethargic and sleepy the day before the spots appeared. Looked like bites at first.

Duckypoohs · 28/09/2021 20:18

I'm tempted to get the vax for ds2 he's almost 12 and hasn't obviously had it.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 28/09/2021 20:20

No cold symptoms, DS was chipper as anything the only sign was a big fat scabby spot on his cheek. Nursery noticed it first.

BeaLola · 28/09/2021 20:28

A couple of random spots appeared on DS tummy and shoulder

Later the same morning he was pretty covered - he was 7 - he was by teatime just covered completely apart from face

DH got his in his 40s - was excruciating - was covered all over

theneverendinglaundry · 28/09/2021 20:30

2 weeks is how long it takes - I remember my son got spots exactly 2 weeks after his sister did.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 28/09/2021 20:32

DS1 caught chickenpox at school when he was in reception, DS2 came out in spots 15 days later when I thought the incubation period had passed. Ds2 had it worse than ds1 and was quite grouchy but I don't remember if he had cold symptoms beforehand.

Whenigrowupiwanttobea · 28/09/2021 20:34

MY boys both had a bit of a fever and loss of appetite two days before the herald spots appeared behind their ears. Once they arrived new spots seemed to appear every minute.

Minniem2020 · 28/09/2021 20:44

DD had it when she was 10. On the Sunday she was lying on the hall carpet waiting for her dad to pick her up coz she was so exhausted but she'd been to a sleepover the night before so I put it down to that. Felt totally fine on the Monday, went to school as normal, Monday teatime she said she had a rash on her tummy and there they were. For the next few days more and more just kept appearing. I had them when I was 30, only had a couple of spots but the lack of energy was the worse, I couldn't walk up the stairs in one go

Jigsawprison · 28/09/2021 20:49

All three started on the abdomen and were grumpy for about 24 hours before.

BertieBotts · 28/09/2021 20:52

@Duckypoohs

I'm tempted to get the vax for ds2 he's almost 12 and hasn't obviously had it.
I would. DS1 never got it, he's nearly 13 now, we moved to a country that they vaccinate for it when he was 5 so as he hasn't had it is about to get picked up at his puberty check up and apparently it's his choice, but I've recommended that he gets it.

A friend of mine had it at 12, one of the big Harry potter books had not long come out and I remember her saying she was trying to read it but didn't have the strength to lift up the book! It can be really nasty if you get it when you're older.

user1000000000009 · 28/09/2021 20:58

My son had a runny nose before he came out in spots a week later.

Put her in a warm bath - it brings them out quicker

Gmom · 28/09/2021 21:10

Takes me back to my childhood. I was meant to be flower girl at a wedding. I was so excited about the bespoke dress and hair band. But I got chickenpox on the day before the wedding. I had chills and telltale spots on my back. It was disappointing but 30+ years later I'm over it and I'm sure the bride is too.

Smurf123 · 28/09/2021 21:13

My 3 year old got it exactly 2 weeks after someone in nursery, first spot was on his neck, he only got about 10/15 spots in total mind you and they had all crusted over by day 3. He was back at nursery within a week. But then the Spots didn't bother him and he was bouncing off the walls by day 2.

CyclingIsNotOuting · 28/09/2021 21:15

My DC had a temperature, irritable, then the spots appeared on the ‘trunk’ stomach and back. A couple here and there and then covered.
