Are there any songs/pieces of music that give you the creeps?

The War of The Worlds soundtrack scares the hell out of me. The Red Weed from that was used during my music exam in High School and I came close to having a panic attack as it had such an effect upon me.

Likewise I had no idea that Forever Autumn was used in WOTW but the first time I heard it, it really spooked me.

Another song that makes me feel strange is Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm by Crash Test Dummies. I don't know why but there's something sinister about it.

Does anyone else experience this effect with certain songs?

Some of Tubular bells was used for the exorcist film which I've never seen , but it very scary apparently.
It is a weird composition.
The crash test dummies and Kraftwerk have made some odd songs too!

@CreepyPaper

Hazard by Richard Marx is another though I guess it's supposed to be slightly creepy/unsettling.
Do we think that he did kill Mary ? I think he did it.

Dancing With Tears In My Eyes - Ultravox. More so when watching the video.

The recent ballad version is much nicer.

Bit niche and weird, but "Keening for a Dead Love" by Aidan Moffatt and RM Hubbert.

The backing noises scared the daylights out of me when I first heard it

The album ended up on in the background when I brought my bf round mine for the first time. It kept glitching on this track, and on another that had his nickname in; it was streaming/downloaded, so no issues with scratched cds or vinyl.

He died unexpectedly 6 months or so later. I played this a bit too much in the aftermath.

@Sloth66

The theme tune called Sing Something Simple that used to be on Sunday night radio. It was an awful dirge, reminding me that the weekend was over…
Definitely! It just made me impatient for the top 40 to begin.

As for theme tunes with a creepy childhood nursery rhyme vibe - the old BBC Schools geography programme Near and Far takes some beating!

Alice cooper, Stephen.

According to Google, music written in the minor key are known for sounding dark, depressing or creepy.
This guy explains and plays some major songs in minor to illustrate.

iklboo · 27/09/2021 15:50

Bill Bailey does a really funny part of his show where he plays happy songs in a minor key and sad / depressing ones in a major.

iklboo · 27/09/2021 15:52

I think he did it.

I think it was the Sheriff or his son & they used RM's character as the 'weirdo' scapegoat.

Here he is -

Elgar's cello concerto is deeply unsettling and sad. It's a haunting piece that I really don't like. I think I have memories attached to it somewhere. I switch the radio over if it comes on. Madonna frozen is not great either but that's because I was in a bad place when it came out and hearing it brings all that back.

Freestyler - Bomfunk mc's

No idea why but there's something about it that makes me feel uneasy and on edge.

Magissa · 27/09/2021 16:11

@Pinkmagic1 Yes! Windmills of your mind By Noel Harrison. Scared me so much as a child now I still feel really creeped out by it.

@JustPickleRick

the80sweregreat · 27/09/2021 16:21

There is a song by Basement Jax that sounds like a dentist drill. It does put my teeth on edge!

MolyHolyGuacamole · 27/09/2021 16:22

The version of Do You Hear What I Hear from The Gremlins 🙈 makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up

SapphosRock · 27/09/2021 16:35

Baby it's cold outside. Rapey as fuck Sad

I simply must go
Baby it's cold outside
The answer is no
But baby it's cold outside
The welcome has been
How lucky that you dropped in
So nice and warm
Look out the window at that storm
My sister will be suspicious
Gosh your lips look delicious!
My brother will be there at the door
Waves upon a tropical shore
My maiden aunt's mind is vicious
Gosh your lips are delicious!
Well maybe just a cigarette more
Never such a blizzard before
And I don't even smoke

Most of the music listed on this thread is among my favourite- Clare de Lune, Carol of the Bells, Kylie and Nick Cave...

I've come to the conclusion you're all quite strangeWink

That Sam Smith one on the Alexa advert when they're in the car "Alexa play our dance playlist". Think it's called Tonight. I loved the musical arrangement but the lyrics feel unsettlingly rapey.

Also Susudio by Phil Collins. Used to like it until I watched American Psycho and it absolutely ruined it for me.

It's called "Promises" not Tonight and is Calvin Harris and Sam Smith. Begins with

Are you drunk enough?
Not to judge what I'm doin'
Are you high enough
To excuse that I'm ruined?…

Ugh

Is it the one with the simpering female voice who goes "right"
Lorw · 27/09/2021 17:02

Fallout theme track 🤢

woodhill · 27/09/2021 17:05

Hello, this is Joanie from Paul Evans - 1979 is creepy too and very dated

woodhill · 27/09/2021 17:05

And Funeral Pyre by the Jam with hypnotic drumming is weird but brilliant

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 27/09/2021 17:08
