Are there any songs/pieces of music that give you the creeps?

The War of The Worlds soundtrack scares the hell out of me. The Red Weed from that was used during my music exam in High School and I came close to having a panic attack as it had such an effect upon me.

Likewise I had no idea that Forever Autumn was used in WOTW but the first time I heard it, it really spooked me.

Another song that makes me feel strange is Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm by Crash Test Dummies. I don't know why but there's something sinister about it.

Does anyone else experience this effect with certain songs?

The horrible male wailing choir in space oddesey

OhWhyNot · 26/09/2021 23:14

The monk chanting music popular in the early 90’s by Enigma

WaltzingToWalsingham · 26/09/2021 23:16

ACDC's Thunderstruck is like nails down a blackboard to me. I have to leave the room if it's playing.

American Pie by Don McLean. When I was 9 I remember my mum playing it in the car before we got home to the news that my dad had suffered a massive heart attack and was on the way to hospital. He never came back.

I just called to say I love you, it was playing everywhere I just had the first of several miscarriages, it summed up everything that baby would never see.

If it comes on the radio I have to switch off, it still hurts 35 years on.

I never got my longed for second baby.

Years ago when I was a child there was an advert for castrol gtx oil. I think it was called that
The music made me feel sick. I hated it

iklboo · 26/09/2021 23:36

Ohhhh there was a tv drama about rabies coming to the U.K. in the 80s called The Mad Death. The opening music was 'ring a ring of roses' but sung really slowly by children. It was really creepy & spine tingling.

Loved this thread and have now stayed up far too late googling tracks that weren't familiar to me and creeped myself out!!
Love some of them though but most do give me visceral response like unease or sadness...

makinganavalon · 27/09/2021 00:17

I also hate Peter and the wolf
But also find the music of Cats the musical incredibly creepy- makes my skin crawl.
Then there's a horrible song by Rolf Harris about a boy being lost in a supermarket and then when his mum finds him she smacks him. I absolutely loathe and detest that song- it was on a cassette my parents used to play in the car on holidays with other kids songs-and I found the whole thing so sinister and upsetting I would have a small panic attack as a child when it came on.

I agree with @GoodbyeToCare...'Running up that hill' by Kate Bush creeps me out.
It was the theme tune to 'Running Scared' a kids program in 1986 and must remind me of something unnerving.

VienneseWhirligig · 27/09/2021 01:38

I'm surprised that people find the theme to Tales of the Unexpected creepy. It reminds me of staying with my nanna overnight every weekend, and watching Tales of the Unexpected (and Tales from the Crypt) from her huge comfy bed, with a pot of tea and Nice biscuits. Really fond memories.

Lanique · 27/09/2021 03:13

The theme tune to Antiques Roadshow creeps me out. It makes me think of dusty old dolls, gramophones and nurseries etc. Plus, and probably more relevantly, it gives me that queasy Sunday evening feeling I'd get before going back to school as a child. Ditto Songs of Praise.

I also used to find the theme tune from Casualty quite unsettling and menacing.

I agree with many of the songs mentioned on here. Not many freak me out to the point of not listening to them, because most mentioned here are decent pieces of music (whatever you're into) but I agree that many have a very odd, haunting feel to them.

'A good heart' by Feargal Sharkey 🤢 both the sound of his voice and his face unnerve me ( for no particular reason ) but I have to turn the song off if it ever comes on - I have no idea why but it's so unsettling.

Fearful Sharkey had a really really horrible voice. And “A Good Heart” was a shit song. I turn it off too.
Wagsandclaws · 27/09/2021 04:01

Ha ha it is a shit song as well!

Inkanta · 27/09/2021 04:29

Anything by the Lighthouse Family. But especially “Lifted”. His voice makes me feel sicky and I don’t know why

YES. I can't listen to Lifted. Really creeped out by it.

JoyOrbison · 27/09/2021 05:58

For all the posters who love The Witchita Line Man, check out the Brighouse and Rastrick brass band cover of it - it is beautiful!

Sassenach85 · 27/09/2021 07:47

Does anyone remember a tv show called “999”?? The intro song was horrible and my brother used to cry and hide lol

lollipoprainbow · 27/09/2021 08:18

@Sassenach85 yes with Michael Burke presenting ! The music was scary.

suckingonchillidogs · 27/09/2021 08:21

Alone again naturally by Gilbert O'Sullivan. Such sad lyrics but set to quite an upbeat melody, messes with my head

Nameisjustaname · 27/09/2021 08:36

999 theme tune just popped into my head and then saw posts above.
Loved the programme though.

I hated the song about The Windmill in Old Amsterdam as a child - the thought of all those mice clip clippity clopping around in clogs gave me the creeps.Shock

MrsWidgerysLodger · 27/09/2021 11:31

@crapatthis1

Also Hurt by Johnny Cash. I love the song but I find the video haunting

The original is by Nine Inch Nails and sounds rather different!

Warandpeas · 27/09/2021 14:37

Hayling by FC Kahuna. Was on a compilation CD me and my then boyfriend listened to in the car as we drove around feeling like melancholy teenagers. I can't bear it when it comes onto chill out radio now - completely transports me back to that depressing, end of summer, breakup imminent time in my life in between end of school and uni. Just found the video for it and it is creepy AF.

For the same reasons, Jeff Buckley's "Grace" and anything by Radiohead up to and including Hail to the Thief. My late teens were pretty bleak in retrospect!

Sloth66 · 27/09/2021 14:58

The theme tune called Sing Something Simple that used to be on Sunday night radio.
It was an awful dirge, reminding me that the weekend was over…
