so what are you going to do when there is no more petrol at all?

All these people all over the media and social media saying why they personally need petrol over other people, because their job is more important/their need is greatest/they have no alternative, or whatever.

They don't seem to realise that petrol is expected to run out completely in their life time anyway. 4-5 decades, most projections, although it is likely to become unavailable to private citizens a long time before that, maybe 20-30 years before.

What are these people planning to do then?

What are these people planning to do if the country does run out next week, or next month, or next year, any of which is possibly after Brexit, and what are they planning to do in a world or a country without petrol?

how many bloody petrol threads does one site need?

Strictly1 · 25/09/2021 13:05

What is happening this week is not really linked to what will happen in a decade is it? Things will develop/progress but for now I'll need fuel to get to work on Monday.

TeenMinusTests · 25/09/2021 13:07

Well, by then everyone will have electric cars?
But we don't at the moment because:

  • more expensive
  • less range
  • not enough charging points
chaosmaker · 25/09/2021 13:08

Wales is investing in hydrogen but central gov is an ass and should be heavily investing in this area to bring it forward. There is a 1 year trial of some hydrogen powered cars in Abergavenny. Look up Riversimple, I think it is. Gov must not be allowed to push blue hydrogen (from fossil fuels) just green hydrogen made from the air

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 25/09/2021 13:08

By then we will have transitioned to electric cars so will be a moot point.

Tiredmum100 · 25/09/2021 13:09

I do know it5s going to run out but I'm hoping there will be better facilities for electric cars by then.

Elephantsparade · 25/09/2021 13:09

Well im waiting for the country to put the infrastructure in to support everyone to have electric cars. Which they sort of started doing so i assumed that would pick up pace..

megletthesecond · 25/09/2021 13:09

We should have a proper electric car infrastructure and fast charging by then. And maybe better cycle routes for short, local journeys.

CindersPumpkin · 25/09/2021 13:10

I gather AI, drones and robots will be taking over so we will not require to drive ourselves, electric self drive vehicles and goodness knows how we will find and entertain ourselves with our jobs gone.

My plan? Refresher course in horse riding Wink

LukeEvansWife · 25/09/2021 13:11

Adapt, it's what people do

Downthespidersweb · 25/09/2021 13:11

Petrol cars wont be sold in the uk after 2035

Buttetflybookkeeper · 25/09/2021 13:12

You can't compare an overnight change in circumstances to what will happen in 50 years time.

Long term, we will be buying an electric car. Our home is already solely electric. But we are not in the position to spend £20k on a brand new car right now. And I'm not going to do so just because of a (hopefully) temporary petrol shortage . If needs be I'll spend a couple of hundred quid on a new bike or take the bus short term.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 25/09/2021 13:13

I think it's 2030. And yes, it'll be electric vehicles.

Buttetflybookkeeper · 25/09/2021 13:13

Should also say, I WFH, DH takes his bike and the kids walk to school. So I can cope if we run out.

myadhdusername · 25/09/2021 13:15

Aren’t we all meant to have electric cars fairly soon? Confused

ArcheryAnnie · 25/09/2021 13:17

Instead of pinning your hopes on everyone being able to just seamlessly switch over to electric cars and carry on as normal, what about reinvigorating public transport services in areas currently ill-served by them, and also on providing services within walking distance of where people live, so they don't drive?

I mean, some people will want to drive regardless (looking at you, my sisters neighbour who drives her son to school on the same street she lives); but surely people would enjoy not having to jump in a car multiple times a day?

Moonface123 · 25/09/2021 13:18

I don't have a car, so will be walking or cycling as normal .

megletthesecond · 25/09/2021 13:19

mya I assume it will only really kick in around 2040. If the infrastructure isn't in place people will continue buying petrol until 2035 and keep those cars for as long as possible.
Most houses in my grim estate don't have parking and lots of cars park on corners or grass verges. It'll kick off massively if only a handful of chargers are installed.

pussycatlickinglollyices · 25/09/2021 13:23

Electric is an old technology.

Nitrogen is the future.

Downthespidersweb · 25/09/2021 13:23

@PastMyBestBeforeDate

I think it's 2030. And yes, it'll be electric vehicles.
Yes sorry 2030....however a quick google reveals many manufacturers will go all electric before then
SoloISland · 25/09/2021 13:23

Interesting question as I live on an offshore island with no shops … NB I have no car but....

NantesElephant · 25/09/2021 13:26

The grid will not cope if we all have electric cars. There are big lifestyle changes coming up.

FluffyWhiteBird · 25/09/2021 13:26

I'm wary of electric cars. What happens when the battery stops holding a charge after a few heard, like happens with phones and laptops? What will happen to the dead batteries. I've heard that somewhere in the world there's a huge field fill of perfectly fine (when they were parked there anyway, probably seize up after a while) electric cars whose batteries are dead and can't be replaced, or disposed of/recycled because there's no facilities for it. I don't know if this is true, but it wouldn't surprise me. I'm not convinced electric cars are as great as the government likes to make out. Plus the carbon footprint of making them, having scrapped all the perfectly fine and working petrol/diesels. We only ever bear the benefits of electric cars and I wonder what the statistics are for the negatives. How will the electricity supply system cope when everyone has 3-4 electric cars plugged in on their driveways at 6pm each evening. What about tower blocks of flats or terraced houses with no driveways? What happens when there's a power cut, does the town grind to a halt? I've no idea what the answer is. I'm just not sure it's "electric cars" said like there are no problems with that whatever.

TheABC · 25/09/2021 13:26

Campaign for better public transport & safer bike routes
Use bikes - pedal or electric
Use scooters - push or electric
Use cars - hydrogen or electric
Walk
Work from home (where possible)
Use a horse, donkey or llama (ok, that's a bit tongue in cheek). Grin

Petrol cars have only been around for a century, compared to millennial of human history. I am sure we can find a way to survive without them.
