so what are you going to do when there is no more petrol at all?

All these people all over the media and social media saying why they personally need petrol over other people, because their job is more important/their need is greatest/they have no alternative, or whatever.

They don't seem to realise that petrol is expected to run out completely in their life time anyway. 4-5 decades, most projections, although it is likely to become unavailable to private citizens a long time before that, maybe 20-30 years before.

What are these people planning to do then?

What are these people planning to do if the country does run out next week, or next month, or next year, any of which is possibly after Brexit, and what are they planning to do in a world or a country without petrol?

Godh rypos. *stops holding charge after a few years.

Electric is an old technology.

Nitrogen is the future.

Nitrogen? What's possible with nitrogen?

Depends what's been done at government level to do what needs doing for an existence without petrol.
If nothing, we're stuffed, as I think currently petrol is a lot more vital than for driving the dc's to karate.

Frostine · 25/09/2021 13:30

I had a DPD delivery this morning , he was saying the £30 limit for fuel is not very helpful for them, include the 30 minutes queue and perhaps done a few times a day , equals less home delivery / no deliveries.

merryhouse · 25/09/2021 13:31

@Buttetflybookkeeper how much do you spend on heating?

Every time the question of getting rid of gas comes up (not as a personal thing, as a general Gas Will Eventually Stop idea) my husband gets really - ah - overinvested in telling us how expensive electricity is and you can't possibly afford to heat a house with it

which obviously kills the conversation stone dead (I don't think that's his intent, he's just tone-deaf to this sort of thing)

MardyBoudoir · 25/09/2021 13:34

Move to The Netherlands and cycle everywhere.

EdithWeston · 25/09/2021 13:35

In the next decade or so, it'll be the transition to electric vehicles (I'd be supremely unbothered by current woes if we didn't have 2 long trips to do in the next 10 days, as we have a hybrid and barely use petrol in town - only if we forget to plug in)

After that, it will be new technologies - it must be a good time to be an automotive engineer working on sustainable non-fossil rechnology

Petrol/diesel will become the preserve of certain agricultural and military machines, and historic classic cars

Elephantsparade · 25/09/2021 13:37

The country will have to massively increase electricity production and charging points which is what i mean by infrastructure. Also invest in public transport.
I know there are hydrogen vehicles too but they need to be green hydrogen not grey.

pussycatlickinglollyices · 25/09/2021 13:39

Bugger. Hydrogen, not Nitrogen. Blush

All my downstairs electrics are off at the mo, so I'm a little bit preoccupied waiting for a spark even if I do have some petrol. Grin

Hydrogen fuel cell - the only "waste" or emission is water.

Fancymice · 25/09/2021 13:41

Well I've already started training a pack of 10 cats to pull me on a small chariot. I should have the steering issues sorted soon.

Might get a job delivering amazon

AmericanTie · 25/09/2021 13:41

I've already got my electric powered jet pack. Fuck you guys.

GiveMeNovocain · 25/09/2021 13:41

40/50 years? I suspect the only moving I'll be doing is turning in my grave

pussycatlickinglollyices · 25/09/2021 13:42

Fancymice did you do it with dreamies stuck on a bit of cotton thread?? 😹

EvilPea · 25/09/2021 13:43

Yeah electric cars aren’t the silver bullet. But they are a help.

user1495884211 · 25/09/2021 13:46

We'll have been wiped out by extreme weather events by then so not something thatI'm worrying about.

Jaxhog · 25/09/2021 13:49

You're confusing a short-term problem with a long-term one. Long-term, yes, petrol will run out, but we're already developing solutions for this. Short-term, we'll be fine once people get over the panic buying. There's no actual shortage at the moment; it's just not getting to the pumps fast enough.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_Turbine_Car Jay Leno has one of these - you could theoretically run it on tequilla...

Porfre · 25/09/2021 13:52

I'll be retired

Son is a geophysicist spent 14 years mapping oil exploration worldwide. There's plenty of it just how much it costs to extract. We're not running out

TSSDNCOP · 25/09/2021 14:11

Thank god for petrol. Now Covid is getting under control it's the new panicathon du jour.

I am loving the ideas of horse riding or having a team of cats pull me along.
We could also use dogs.
Looking at my pets I dont think I would get far at all.

DGRossetti · 25/09/2021 14:15

@Dragon50

My plan? Refresher course in horse riding Wink
Because going back everyone had a horse, right ?

There was a lady who used a wheelchair near us in Selly Oak whose dogs were trained to pull her along. RSPCA got involved and stopped it. Apparently it's not what dogs are for.

I wonder how many people know what Shanks' pony is ?
