What's one thing you always buy the best of?

When you do your weekly food shop.
We don't get all the fancy branded organic bits but...
Eggs! Nothing beats a poached burford brown on some seeded bread!

The things we try buy the best of is -
Eggs
Bog roll (absolute must)
And free range meat.

What are your best of the best necessities? Grin

Cat food. The decent quality stuff maintains their health more effectively than the cheap stuff. The cats eat better than we do 😄

SpikeDearheart · 24/09/2021 09:00

Also free range meat, although not necessarily organic. Ditto for good quality, sustainably sourced fish. As it is £££, we only have it once or twice a week.

I also try to buy good tinned tomatoes, as they make very simple, healthy dishes much tastier!

Standrewsschool · 24/09/2021 09:01

Bin bags - buy cheap, you need double as they rip
Shoes - think Clarks price bracket, not supermarket/clothes shop price
Coats - tend to walk everywhere so need a decent, waterproof coat

Martinisarebetterdirty · 24/09/2021 09:02

I always buy nurofen and migraleve (yellow) rather than ibuprofen and co-codamol. I know it’s the same but I must get a placebo effect from the brand names as they seem to work better for me.

Sparklingbrook · 24/09/2021 09:04

Toilet roll, definitely. Not skimping on that-usually Cushelle.
Heinz tomato ketchup (I don't eat it but can't get any brands past the DC even putting it in the Heinz bottle)

PurpleDaisies · 24/09/2021 09:05

My first thought was also bin bags!

We always have McCain home fries. Other chips just don’t do well in our oven.

Kitchen roll.

BabyYouKnowMyHandsAreDirty · 24/09/2021 09:06

Dishwasher tablets, washing powder, cereal, mayonnaise. Also all meat and dairy products are organic. I don’t eat them but insist that any consumed by partner and kids are at least a bit better although I know they’re not really much better. 😔 And teabags.

Coffee - I would hate to have to compromise on my favourite coffee, it's not the 'most expensive' but a particular Columbian brand that I just really like. yes I am guilty of stock piling after it was out of stock for a month

I used to buy Burford eggs but at £3 for six this morning I decided to choose a cheaper free range box.

Fairy washing up liquid.

Quite a lot of 'decent quality' food really, very happy to compromise in other areas- I dress exclusively from charity shops Grin and don't prioritise eating out, cinema, theatre, holidays etc.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 24/09/2021 09:08

Jars of curry sauce. The best brand available as the flavour is a lot better.
Mushy peas for DH.
Heinz ketchup

kleew1 · 24/09/2021 09:11

Oatly barista
Eggs
Innocent smoothies

CandleWick4 · 24/09/2021 09:11

Washing powder/tablets
Coffee and tea
Toothpaste

PurpleDaisies · 24/09/2021 09:12

I forgot about coffee, although I do like Aldi regular ground.

I used to be more snobby about non branded stuff but since watching Eat Well for Less we’ve tried and found lots of cheaper options.

MajorCarolDanvers · 24/09/2021 09:12

Meat and dairy

Lonelycrab · 24/09/2021 09:12

Coffee for me too. Bought some costa branded stuff a few weeks back as it was half price. Urgh. Horrible stuff. Lavazza red every time.

ANameChangeAgain · 24/09/2021 09:13

Wine🍷- not horrendously expensive, but I always get at least the £8-£10 per bottle stuff.
We have a farm so eggs and meat are always the best.
Decent coats and good wellies - again on a farm so anything else would be false economy.
Car always has to be a Landrover - never under 10 years ago, but again reference above!
Dog food / animal feed - there is a theme, isn’t there!

heidbuttsupper · 24/09/2021 09:16

Tuna

BarefootHippieChick · 24/09/2021 09:18

Toilet rolls - I used to just buy Tesco, but honestly, during the pandemic they've changed it and now its so rough. So now I buy Cushelle or Andrex

Coffee, Kenco only

Heinz ketchup, nothing else tastes as nice.

Cat food, Whiskas or Felix

SoloISland · 24/09/2021 09:24

Chocolate. Has to be Cadbury Dairy Milk or nothing ….just three squares a day

Real butter. Not those spreads.

Small pension here so... I always said I would never ever change from Nescafe Gold Blend but the sheer cost … And now I prefer the SV cheapest.
A lot of it is what you are used to and that can change

Basic cat food but raw chicken. Human grade.

mumofdiamonds · 24/09/2021 09:24

Cat food - Nature's Menu.
Meat/Poultry
Wine

SoloISland · 24/09/2021 09:25

Sorry, wait...I can’t just let this go...! What do you mean you haven’t used toilet roll for years?!
PegasusReturns · 24/09/2021 09:31

Rugs
Bed linen
Butter
Painkillers
Toilet roll
Slippers
Flights

PegasusReturns · 24/09/2021 09:32

I am however a sucker for cheap chocolate - give me a bar of dairy milk over the fancy stuff any day!

Teaandakitkat · 24/09/2021 09:32

Tea. Lovely loose tea leaves from the tea shop in town. I make a special trip once a month to smell them all and stock up. I can deal with anything if I have a decent cup of tea.

boobot1 · 24/09/2021 09:34
