What's one thing you always buy the best of?

When you do your weekly food shop.
We don't get all the fancy branded organic bits but...
Eggs! Nothing beats a poached burford brown on some seeded bread!

The things we try buy the best of is -
Eggs
Bog roll (absolute must)
And free range meat.

What are your best of the best necessities? Grin

Only organic meat, eggs, milk - yes it's more expensive but the quality is so much better. And I feel more comfortable consuming products which treat animals humanely.

I'm also making an effort to buy locally grown/produced goods to support farmers/companies. It's really tough to do in Australia as so much in supermarkets is offshore.

@TheWayTheLightFalls £50 a month on cheese? 😲

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 24/09/2021 14:53

OK fair enough @PegasusReturns

Luckily I don't have a problem swallowing pills so will stick with my bargain basement versions which seem to work.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 24/09/2021 14:54

@MintyGreenDream yeah. In my defence (not that I, you or anyone here needs one) we're pretty frugal overall and really frugal if you look at our income v spending - I still shop at Aldi, freeze leftovers, we sometimes eat beans for dinner rah rah. But £50 a month of delicious cheese from all over the UK and Europe is lovely and I'm happy to spend that.

Oh god I would be so fat if I spent £50 a month on cheese. But I wouldn't quibble with the figure - I could easily blow £12.50 a week on it if I let myself!

HeronLanyon · 24/09/2021 15:03

Eggs
All dairy both for animal welts reins where known.
Loo roll.
Fruit and veg- I’m vegetarian so it’s kind of key.
Coffee
Alcohol.

Bearnecessity · 24/09/2021 15:51

Eggs and potatoes.o

Alwaysfuckingsick · 24/09/2021 16:43

Eggs-come from a local farm
Toilet roll-not super fancy just not the cheapest
Teabags
Bin liners

DoubleHelix79 · 24/09/2021 16:54

Cheese and chocolate. I'd live on beans on toast before eating cheap substitutes.

FairFuming · 24/09/2021 17:53

Baked beans.

Bin bag

Shoes

Art supplies

FairFuming · 24/09/2021 17:53

@Teaandakitkat

Tea. Lovely loose tea leaves from the tea shop in town. I make a special trip once a month to smell them all and stock up. I can deal with anything if I have a decent cup of tea.
Ooh I forgot about tea. I just had a delivery of lovely tea leaves today and it's honestly made my week 😆
the80sweregreat · 24/09/2021 17:57

Petrol ..

tedsletterofthelaw · 24/09/2021 17:58

I wouldn't say 'the best' but I always buy good quality shoes, for me and the DC

Rather pay for a decent pair that lasts than have to keep forking out for cheap ones when they fall apart.

OhWhyNot · 24/09/2021 18:26

Butter President
I do like Aldi salt crystals butter

Fairy washing up liquid as it lasts ages and washing pods (because I can afford them now and like the smell)

Cat likes Felix or Tesco’s/Sainsbury’s fish in jelly. Vet told me off apparently it’s like a diet of McDonald’s. Cat for 17 is in great health, no medication needed, teeth all fine and loves his crap food diet (didn’t like the vet food)

OhWhyNot · 24/09/2021 18:27

I never wear plastic shoes or boots (neither does ds) apart from wellies

For myself for years my boots were second hand off eBay all really good boots

LemonMeringueThreePointOneFour · 24/09/2021 18:59

@BarefootHippieChick

Toilet rolls - I used to just buy Tesco, but honestly, during the pandemic they've changed it and now its so rough. So now I buy Cushelle or Andrex

Coffee, Kenco only

Heinz ketchup, nothing else tastes as nice.

Cat food, Whiskas or Felix

Whiskas and Felix are most definitely not the best cat food.
DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 24/09/2021 19:13

Cushelle TP, because quality, made locally (Prudhoe) and I used to haul it.

Organic fair trade coffee. Yorkshire tea. McLeods black pudding.

I buy meat by eye, fish off the dock at Amble, eggs and spuds from the gate, veg from the allotment holders, Birds Eye petit pois because I worked in the supply chain.

Cars: Skoda, Honda, Toyota. Built by engineers, not marketing.

chocolateorangeinhaler · 24/09/2021 19:19

LaBellina · 24/09/2021 19:21

LaBellina · 24/09/2021 19:22

Zeal · 24/09/2021 19:26

AdaColeman · 24/09/2021 19:47

Suzysunflower · 24/09/2021 19:52

I totally don't want to be that person but how come so many people cannot spell Twinings? one n people, one n.

mamaduckbone · 24/09/2021 20:10

Real butter
Decent instant coffee - Kenco or Milicano - weirdly I can drink any old ground coffee but not cheap instant
Teabags - Yorkshire for preference
Free range eggs
That's about it. We've been shopping at Aldi for so long that I'm used to their brands now. I do buy Helmanns mayonnaise at Christmas for a treatGrin

SunscreenCentral · 24/09/2021 20:28

Kerrygold butter
Proper coffee
Barry's tea
Meats from the butcher
Fish from the fishmonger
Veg from the green grocer (mostly)
We spend a lot on food but we are car free so don't have that expense
