Any one else Checking the news every couple of hours just in case they've gone bust?

OP posts:

@AnyFucker

Yes, I have. I have full trust in the government too that it will not be an absolute ballache to get it sorted should the worst happen Smile
Im with this view.

Even if you have credit, I'm willing to bet we will see consumer programmes in 12 months time where people tell Dom that their credit has gone missing and they cannot get through to anyone to make it reappear.

It could be years before some people get it back (if ever) and it may involve you having to chase it for hours on end.

If you can download proof of your credit now, it will help you enormously in the future.

But don't expect that money to be freely accessible to you any time soon when you might need it most.

I'm sure there will be cases of people who have credit, get put on high tariffs, then cant pay them and get into debt and are chased for that debt, even though they have hundreds lost in credit purgatory.

What I really wouldn't be doing would be upping my direct debit on fuel now by £20 unless I was with the big six. Instead put extra money (if you have in) into a savings account you can access.

This is going to hit everyone eventually so I think its a wise move to put it aside if you can afford to.

But yes, I wouldn't trust guarantee systems because they are notoriously shit and people always have problems with them.

@MargaretMorris

Yes. I was shocked last week when they sent a letter to say they would be increasing my bills by £30 a month. I'm back working in the office and barely had the heating on until the last week!

Sorry if this is dim but can someone explain what being in credit means? They take money out of my account every month so what is the credit?

I'm a new home owner so I thought maybe I'm new to these things but I've never been in credit with a previous supplier as far as I know.

You pay a fixed amount each month based on what they predict you will use. When you then send meter readings you may have used more or less hence being either in credit (you've used less than predicted) or debit (you've used more).
FreddyMercurysCat · 23/09/2021 09:28

They've stopped replying to my emails in the last 48hrs. They’ve sent me a £800 bill and asked me to top up to £1100 - claiming I've used £300 worth of gas in August Confused

They started out great for me and then quickly went downhill.

Can't switch suppliers until they recalculate my bill.

Hunkeringdown · 23/09/2021 09:38

Moved from Bulb to Octopus 6 weeks ago when Bulb asked for a ridiculously large increase in my monthly payment.

Octopus offered a fixed rate deal, unlike Bulb and I received a £50 credit using a referral code.

Asked Bulb for a refund of the credit in my account on the day I instigated the switch and it arrived in 2 days.

Is there any reason why you don’t just take control and instigate a switch?

My sister did this 2 days ago using my Octopus referral code, so I think it is still possible to switch a.t.m.

If you’re really worried Start process of getting your credit refunded through chat bot

As per above posters

Kerplunkk · 23/09/2021 09:59

I won’t put the code on here as that seems a bit grabby to assume but if anyone wanted to switch to octopus I have a referral code where we receive £50 credit each, give me a PM & I’ll send it over Smile

Kerplunkk · 23/09/2021 10:00

Echo other posters about keeping a record of any credit accumulated.
I am that person that keeps years worth of letters and a few times it has helped a situation

AnyFucker · 23/09/2021 10:00

Have requested a refund and told we would only be eligible for… wait for it, £27

VictoriaBun · 23/09/2021 10:04

We were with a company that went bust a few years ago. You will receive a letter telling you that you are now receiving your energy from xxx company. It might take a few weeks to hear from them but they will contact you and then you have the right to change suppliers if you wish. We had credit with our other supplier but did receive it back.

VictoriaBun · 23/09/2021 10:05

I am with Octopus as well , and can offer a mutually beneficial ( we both received it ) £ 50 cash back to our a/cs .Pm me.

Very easy to check

Look at your usage
Look at the charge rate
Deduct from credit

They can’t make it up when you have access to all the information

Alfiemoon1 · 23/09/2021 10:10

Yes as I am with them and also in credit

GrealishHairband · 23/09/2021 10:16

I’m with Avro who when I went to check my bill yesterday their website informed me that they had ceased to trade.

They still haven’t informed me personally of that information, I had credit on there but I can’t access my account now. I only bloody moved from bulb 6 weeks ago as well…

AnyFucker · 23/09/2021 10:16

Martin Lewis on ITV now

He also is talking about “glitches” in the “safety net”

Iwouldratherbemuckingout · 23/09/2021 10:17

I am with them but for electricity only, and my direct debit is pretty close to what I use each month, and I am consistent all year round. I’m a whopping £3.41 in credit. I’m just holding on and seeing what happens.

Musicaltheatremum · 23/09/2021 10:19

I'm with green, just gone bust..but I do my energy through "Flipper" they track all the energy companies for the cheapest deal and flip you when they find a cheaper one. Pay £30 a year for the service and they guarantee to save you more than this. You can speak to them direct and they deal directly with the energy companies. Brilliant

MyGrassIsBrowner · 23/09/2021 10:23

Looking like they could be next to go tbh. We were with Peoples Energy and found out a few days ago they've gone bust. Can't access our online account now. Ofgem have put us with British Gas but still yet to get our new quote from them. Very worrying times Sad

LemonSwan · 23/09/2021 10:23

I was with Avro.

Stupidly didnt download my statement and now their online is broken.

We owe them a couple of grand at this stage.

Tried to switch a number of years back and they kept blocking it even though I had never given an actual reading. So if we were in debt it was due to their estimates being off. Read their reviews and apparently they are impossible to leave. They want you in £100s credit and then you never get it back.

So I thought I will just wait, rack up the debt and pay when I move out.

We are completing next week.

And though I do know what my statement amounts where because I wrote them in an excel sheet. I dont have any proof.

Its going to be an interesting one. Fingers crossed they don't mess about, but they are a very scammy scummy company so I wont hold my breath.

DenbyChina · 23/09/2021 10:24

Hmmm this thread is interesting - we’ve got £70 in credit but yesterday were sent an email saying we needed to pay £128 ASAP ‘to get back on track’ Hmm

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 23/09/2021 10:29

@Kerplunkk

If their prices hadn’t risen so much I would still be wirg them mind, fantastic customer service!
Absolutely this. Very easy to deal with, but the prices.... in 2 yrs, our payments more than doubled. Have just moved to Sainsbury's energy
cbatoday · 23/09/2021 10:37

If your energy supplier folds you get moved to a new supplier automatically and put on deemed rates. These are really high and the new supplier will take their time giving you a new quote, as the longer you are on higher rates the more money they make.

Don't wait to be contacted by either the old or new supplier sign up to your preferred company ASAP you could save a fortune

theneverendinglaundry · 23/09/2021 10:40

I'm with Bulb. Martin Lewis recommended on This Morning to do a screenshot of your credit balance, although it is protected if they go bust their website could disappear quickly.

I logged in to do this and couldn't view any of my bills or payment history!

userxx · 23/09/2021 10:49

@theneverendinglaundry Do you have the app on your phone ? I did a screenshot earlier on today.

Spaghettio · 23/09/2021 10:56

We're also with bulb. We're currently in debit to them by a few hundred pounds. Last week they emailed and said they want to increase our DD - to double what it currently is. I had to ring them and say that I'm happy to increase but not that much! Shock

The next day I saw that they were in trouble and assumed they're trying to get hold of as much cash as they can.Hmm

I've got statements downloaded and all of my payments recorded as we've previously been burned by a company that didn't accept our readings and estimated them, then when we needed to leave we couldn't as we owed them thousands. Angry
