Shamed at the Duck pond.

Took my kids to the duck pond today as we accidentally let close to a whole loaf of bread go mouldy. Instead of waste it I thought we could give it to the ducks…..well!

Got there and there was a mum, who if you was to judge on the spot came across as one of those perfect, kind, loving hippy mums with polite kids, she was handing her children what could only be described as real duck feed, they were pellet like and brown.

Also there across the pond was a dad with his young kid, about 4, throwing in peas from a brown kfraft box that has obviously been recycled.

Then us, I’m married, but if you was to judge there and then, a single mum, standing there with her two kids throwing bread into the pond out of the plastic wrapper, with (very slight) mould. Completely inorganic and clearly not saving the world.

The young 4 year old said “ducks don’t eat bread” to his dad who was in ear shot of us, he replied that they do sometimes eat bread as he was obviously being polite to us.

Since when did parents become so perfect?

Just felt like a huge fail as we crossed back over the bridge to read a sign that said “bread kills ducks.”

(My kids didn’t notice the sign thank god!)

🤦🏼‍♀️ Fail

@Geamhradh

And aside from not knowing that bread isn't very good for birds, how did it possibly occur to you that food that had gone mouldy would be OK?
Exactly.

Wildlife aren't your garbage bin!

Mariell · 19/09/2021 14:17

My comment was @LastToBePicked

cookingisoverrated · 19/09/2021 14:18

Bread shouldn't be offered when they have plenty of better alternatives available. Save it for the winter months when there is less food available.

Babyroobs · 19/09/2021 14:19

It's my understanding that bread is bad for ducks especially white bread.

WoozySnoozy · 19/09/2021 14:20

@Mariell

Who made you the duck pond Prefect?

There are signs at many duck ponds that state it’s now ok to feed them bread.

Well that's confusing!

Probably best not to feed them mouldy bread though

Tal45 · 19/09/2021 14:21

Jesus I'm judging you, why the hell would you feed ducks mouldy bread?? Even if you pick out the bits with mould you can see it will be all through it.

I'm always amazed that people do really dumb things and then judge anyone that's doing it properly by slating them for being the 'perfect parent brigade'.

Kernowfornia · 19/09/2021 14:22

I was shamed at the duck pond once. There was this stool on a fulcrum lever arrangement “take a seat they said - it’ll be grand they said ! ‘“ one of the village children held my pointy hat, and her brother looked after the cast iron pot bellied firepot I was popping my foraged herbs in. Up and down into the water I went … my cat Merlin was traumatised by the whole event.

This Mouldy bread is a terrible idea

@yossell

My god, these replies!

I thought your post hilarious, and recognised it as about that ever present sense of parental failure.

Well quite - wouldn’t want to look like a single mother, would you? Hmm
ChargingBuck · 19/09/2021 14:26

@Kernowfornia Grin Grin Grin

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 19/09/2021 14:27

Who judged you? A 4 year old said ducks don't eat bread - I've heard tat as well. The Dad was polite. You've not said that anyone else said anything to you. Who judged you?

SpiceRat · 19/09/2021 14:27

I don’t have time for people who can get worked up over absolutely nothing
And yet here you are getting worked up over being the only person at the duck pond with a plastic bag and bread. Funny that innit.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 19/09/2021 14:27

Someone pointed out that you were feeding animals food that can harm them. Surely you should be pleased that someone has helped you to not harm ducks in the future.

Beebababadabo · 19/09/2021 14:27

Ducks can eat bread I think they put the signs up so the ducks will get a more balanced diet than mostly white bread which is still what alot of people bring. Peas and porridge oats and bread i will take depending on what I have in.

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 19/09/2021 14:28

This is a wild ride. Grin

You thought you were being judged whilst simultaneously judging others, were called out on your poor behaviour (and poor grammar) and then don't think you have time to worry about these things, after posting a thread on Mumsnet about this non-issue?

I need a glass of wine!

ttcwithpcos1 · 19/09/2021 14:29

Time to go back to the duck pond with a post called 'shamed on mumsnet' Grin

Branleuse · 19/09/2021 14:31

you are massively overthinking this. Noone will have cared that you looked like a single mum and tbh, noone will have cared particularly that you fed ducks bread. Even if it was slightly mouldy - im assuming it wasnt completely green?

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 19/09/2021 14:32

Although bread isn't harmful, our advice is to only feed small amounts to birds. We encourage people to use things like sweetcorn, porridge oats and defrosted frozen peas as well as bird seed," RSPB.

Bluntness100 · 19/09/2021 14:33

you are clearly knit picking the post and trying to be offended. I don’t have time for people who can get worked up over absolutely nothing and pick out bits out or context to make themselves upset for no reason

Um that’s exactly what your op is. Confused

Is there parts of it missing? Who shamed you? Did you forget to write that part? Or are you all worked up over a four year old saying ducks don’t eat bread to make yourself upset over absolutely nothing?

And what’s the whole you looked like a single mum thing?

Genuinely, are you ok? Becayse this is just odd.

Arepeoplereallycoolaboutthis · 19/09/2021 14:33

*Think a lot of you clearly missed the point of the post!

Everyone there was the only adult, so they could of all been single or married- that’s not the point!!
They was not judging me. The post clearly indicates how they were a step up at the duck pond whilst I was there with a plastic bag and mouldy bread.*
Sorry OP, but what is the point of your post?

You titled the thread "shamed" but no one shamed you. So do you mean you feel ashamed at what you fed the ducks?

maffhew · 19/09/2021 14:34

So the title of this post should really read 'I felt inadequate at the duck pond'. No one judged you.

What a boring life you must lead to think this was a worthy event to post about.

Bluntness100 · 19/09/2021 14:37

trollopolis · 19/09/2021 14:39

You don't need to be 'perfect' to know that bread causes liver problems in ducks and should not be fed to them

Thanks to pp for the ear worm!!

DevilFinger · 19/09/2021 14:39

@Mariell apologies. Small amounts of bread are fine, the problem with bread on the turn is the mould spores already growing that are not visible, it's not even a case of cutting the mould off
