Shamed at the Duck pond.

Took my kids to the duck pond today as we accidentally let close to a whole loaf of bread go mouldy. Instead of waste it I thought we could give it to the ducks…..well!

Got there and there was a mum, who if you was to judge on the spot came across as one of those perfect, kind, loving hippy mums with polite kids, she was handing her children what could only be described as real duck feed, they were pellet like and brown.

Also there across the pond was a dad with his young kid, about 4, throwing in peas from a brown kfraft box that has obviously been recycled.

Then us, I’m married, but if you was to judge there and then, a single mum, standing there with her two kids throwing bread into the pond out of the plastic wrapper, with (very slight) mould. Completely inorganic and clearly not saving the world.

The young 4 year old said “ducks don’t eat bread” to his dad who was in ear shot of us, he replied that they do sometimes eat bread as he was obviously being polite to us.

Since when did parents become so perfect?

Just felt like a huge fail as we crossed back over the bridge to read a sign that said “bread kills ducks.”

(My kids didn’t notice the sign thank god!)

🤦🏼‍♀️ Fail

It's so sad to see these deformed birds.

BananaPB · 20/09/2021 16:13

Not the point but did you mean stale not mouldy bread.

Feedingthebirds1 · 20/09/2021 16:53

if I read her opening post as she intended it, was imagining a scenario where the smug married lady was possibly one of those who would look judgementally on what she perceived to be a single mum.

Either way, she was saying that feeding bread out of a plastic bag was something a single mum would do. Otherwise why mention it? Clearly she feels that bread in a plastic bag is an indicator of marital status.

Suspect OP is too embarrassed to address her "single mum " faux pas " and is now lying low.

DroopyClematis · 20/09/2021 17:33

Please excuse the third speech mark.

Nah. She came back to tell us that she didn't mean what 99% of us are saying she meant. I think it's called backpedalling, but nobody was convinced Grin.

Slightly furry ... not wet and green!
stevalnamechanger · 20/09/2021 18:33

My family have had ducks for years . We grew up feeding them scraps from a food waste type thing and they were perfectly healthy eating bits of bread and vegetable cuttings .

The ref re mould is probably based on extremely mouldy / green bread - I wouldn't obviously give them that

This is great stuff!

Nowomenaroundeh · 20/09/2021 18:57

Hhahahah OP my entire parenting life (I only have one very easy child and a very supportive partner so I have no excuse) is basically some version of this day.

The other pristine looking new mums at HIIT or yoga would be arriving with a spare toy for my poor neglected looking child or I'd look like a scarecrow when I'd bump into my colleague in the playground with his immaculate family and he'd announce the last time he saw my child she was in the pub. Infinite examples of these comparisons. I don't care. I love being a mum.

@Mariell I'm slightly concerned you might have stolen my dog! This also happened to us Blush
