Shamed at the Duck pond.

Took my kids to the duck pond today as we accidentally let close to a whole loaf of bread go mouldy. Instead of waste it I thought we could give it to the ducks…..well!

Got there and there was a mum, who if you was to judge on the spot came across as one of those perfect, kind, loving hippy mums with polite kids, she was handing her children what could only be described as real duck feed, they were pellet like and brown.

Also there across the pond was a dad with his young kid, about 4, throwing in peas from a brown kfraft box that has obviously been recycled.

Then us, I’m married, but if you was to judge there and then, a single mum, standing there with her two kids throwing bread into the pond out of the plastic wrapper, with (very slight) mould. Completely inorganic and clearly not saving the world.

The young 4 year old said “ducks don’t eat bread” to his dad who was in ear shot of us, he replied that they do sometimes eat bread as he was obviously being polite to us.

Since when did parents become so perfect?

Just felt like a huge fail as we crossed back over the bridge to read a sign that said “bread kills ducks.”

(My kids didn’t notice the sign thank god!)

🤦🏼‍♀️ Fail

It's ok to laugh about your mistake now, although you must realise it was a bit daft to think throwing a whole mouldy loaf in a pond was a good idea?

What you probably mean was that you felt "ashamed" after seeing the sign "do not feed bread to the ducks" and noticing others weren't doing that.

The clumsy way you've tried to make yourself look better by ridiculing the other parents for being "hippy, perfect parents with recycled containers? And the way you've ridiculed single mum's? Cringe.

MrsLCSofLichfield · 19/09/2021 13:54

Why waste time at the duck pond? For a really good shaming, you can just come on MN from the comfort of your own home!

OP, the only thing that could make this thread worse would be if you had posted it on AIBU? Just be glad you didn't do that.

Plumtree391 · 19/09/2021 13:55

@sittingonacornflake

As a single mother myself, I bristled at the way you worded that.

It's a shame you think you looked worse because you looked like a single mother. I'm not sure what's so terrible about being one to be honest. Other than reading things like this Sad

Me too and I'm not a single mother.

Honestly, you do not give ducks bread, never mind mouldy bread. It can choke them! I would have thought everyone knew that nowadays. You were hardly setting a good example to your children.

If I saw a mother and children I would not be able to tell whether they were a single parent and doubt anyone else would. It would hardly be relevant anyway.

Don't do it again and please remove the chip from your shoulder.

@GiveMeAUserName123

I’m not addressing doggie because I haven’t said anything wrong - you are clearly knit picking the post and trying to be offended. I don’t have time for people who can get worked up over absolutely nothing and pick out bits out or context to make themselves upset for no reason. If that’s your thing that’s fine, but it’s not mine.

The post is about being at the duck pond and not knowing you can’t feed bread when everyone else got the memo.

As clearly stated all the other parents there was also alone.

As a single mother I know it’s were alone not was alone.

You were nastily judgemental and you’ve been rightly called out on it. How do you know the man wasn’t a single dad?

LateDecemberBackInLowB12 · 19/09/2021 13:56

The irony 😂😂

"Shamed at the duck pond" indeed 😂

KaptainKaveman · 19/09/2021 13:56

OP: it's "they WERE". Not "they WAS". Ditto "If you WERE", not "If you WAS".

I couldn't give two hoots about your marital status but I'm afraid you might be judged on your grammar. Wink.

And if you do not wish to kill innocent ducks, refrain from feeding them rank, rotting bread.

Miniestelle · 19/09/2021 13:57

Im cringing for you at how unfunny your post is. Live, laugh, love hun

RickySpanishhh · 19/09/2021 13:57

What responses were you looking for, op?

“Hahahahaha you’re so hilarious”

”Yeah, those bloody judgmental parents are always judging me. Who do they think they are? Bastards minding their own business with their bird seed”

“Nowt wrong with mouldy bread. Bloody snowflakes complaining about mould. The ducks are snowflakes too for letting the mould kill them”

GiveMeAUserName123 · 19/09/2021 13:58

Yes my grammar is bad on posts, I never bother to spell check if I’m honest. I know I should do though!

OP posts:
youvegottenminuteslynn · 19/09/2021 13:58

I read 'shamed at the duck pond' to the tune of 'stranded at the drive in'.

Also OP you very clearly have judgements about single mums as is evident in your post. You said the other parents would see you as a single mum when in fact those other parents were also there alone... so why mention it in your post? You mentioned it to imply it's something negative. Something to work on, maybe. It's not a good look.

WoozySnoozy · 19/09/2021 13:59

The post is about being at the duck pond and not knowing you can’t feed bread when everyone else got the memo. then why did you put all the judgey bits in?

You could have just said "OMG I FED MOULDY BREAD TO THE DUCKS AND DIDNT REALISE THEY MIGHT DIE"

PuppyMonkey · 19/09/2021 13:59

I'm both unmarried and a bit hippy at times, so I just don't know what to think about this.

ChargingBuck · 19/09/2021 14:00

Nobody shamed you at the duck pond OP.

You didn't even shame yourself, duck-wise - it's not a moral failure to not know about bread not being the greatest for ducks, & now you've seen the sign, you know better.

You've got some embarrassing notions about single parenthood though.

Doggiedementia · 19/09/2021 14:00

How should I indicated my shameful single mum status when out with my DC? What’s the best way to enable others to judge me?

Ostentatiously flash my ringless left hand?

megletthesecond · 19/09/2021 14:00

"The outraged bristling on this thread is hilarious."

Exactly, I've been a lone parent for a decade and I'm not offended.

KaptainKaveman · 19/09/2021 14:00

Hahaha, yes those people who get "worked up over absolutely nothing". Grin. A bit like someone who refers to an incident where a 4 year old child says "ducks don't eat bread" as being "Shamed at the Duck Pond".

Do you know what irony is, OP? your comments are full of it! I hope this is a joke thread as it's very funny Grin

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 19/09/2021 14:00

Bread won't choke them, it's just not healthy, any more than it is for humans.

Don't feed anything to ducks that you wouldn't eat yourself - it it's not okay to feed your kids mouldy bread, it's not okay to give it to other living things.

Pebbledashery · 19/09/2021 14:01

I just can't understand why you even mentioned anything about being a single parent. How is it relevant to anything at all.

Doggiedementia · 19/09/2021 14:01

When I was married, I would’ve been at the duck pond on my own with the dc because their dad wouldn’t come with us. But that was ok because I was married? And somehow it became not ok once I was divorced? How?

HungryHippo11 · 19/09/2021 14:01

Who were you shamed by?
The 5 year old?
The man who contradicted the 5 year old?
The sign???

You sound very judgmental of the "hippy mum" and the "dad who used a recycled box" and of single parents, which you are keen to tell us you aren't but assume others would judge you for being if you were. You should be more ashamed of this than your bread.

LastToBePicked · 19/09/2021 14:02

Lesson here is buy some duck food! It doesn’t go off so you can keep it for ages - I have a ziplock bag of it in my handbag for any impromptu duck feeding opportunities Grin

I was recently in the park and bumped into one of my son’s friend with his young au pair chucking loads of bread into the pond. An older lady came up to me and gave me a stern talking to about giving bread to the ducks (I think she assumed I was in charge of the group, given the au pair was a good two decades younger than me). I just had to stand there and silently take the lecture.

Doggiedementia · 19/09/2021 14:02

It’s only a joke if everyone is laughing. Plenty of single mums on this thread aren’t.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 19/09/2021 14:02

As a single mum, I couldn't give a shit how you felt, after what you said in your op.

ChargingBuck · 19/09/2021 14:02

I don’t have time for people who can get worked up over absolutely nothing

Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Or time to look up how irony works ..?

drumandthebass · 19/09/2021 14:02

Who knew ducks are peas!

Forgive me for being thick, but what does this mean?
