So, I do have a phone consultation tomorrow but unable to get a face to face initially.
I have what I think is a cyst, and probably an infected one.... over the course of a week / two weeks it has got so much worse... the size isnt my issue it's the pain... can anyone offer advice on how to ease this or just general advice, the skin peeling is new.

Jeez, I have no advice but that looks bloody painful. Hopefully someone will be along soon with some good advice

Burnamer · 14/09/2021 21:51

Err is that your back / shoulder? Just checking what we’re looking at…

Burnamer · 14/09/2021 21:53

You need to get this moved to sporner corner where you will be told to put mag sulphate on it and then get a helpful partner/ neighbour/ stranger to squeeze it, whilst filming of course Grin

Ooof yes that looks really sore and does need a GP. It probably has a sack that needs removing so popping it won't do. If it were me I'd get large size hydrocolloid plasters and stick one on (and leave it as long as possible, days not hours). You can also buy something like volterol which will help with the localised pain. Very hot flannel would also help ... maybe before the hydrocolloid but make sure it's completely dry before you apply the plaster.

Thunderboxskin · 14/09/2021 21:53

I would say it's more on my shoulder than back, halfway down.

Wnikat · 14/09/2021 21:54

Draw a line round it so you can see if it’s spreading/ how quickly

Burnamer · 14/09/2021 21:54

More seriously, yes to the GP and painkillers til then. Looks awfully sore.

theclockticksslowly · 14/09/2021 21:56

What time is your phone consultation? Does your GP surgery have option to email a photo in for the doctor to look at? If your appointment isn’t super early might be worth finding out and if so emailing the photo so the gp can be looking at it while speaking with you?

In the meantime, a warm compress can help sooth it. Looks painful. Hope it’s sorted out quickly for you.

Thunderboxskin · 14/09/2021 21:57

Thank you sylbunny
Oh its definitely bigger. It started off as a maybe 1cm wide hard lump no pain. The last 2 weeks its incredibly different. I will post a picture for comparison .

Luckily my appointment is 8.30am, and I called the practice today to check my number and they had the wrong one (a digit wrong). I wouldnt be so bothered but I can't sleep on one side or my back and I'm struggling to get changed etc.

Yikes that definitely needs treatment asap you poor thing.

Feliciaxxx · 14/09/2021 22:20

Looks like an abscess or carbuncle. Hope you get it sorted.

Thunderboxskin · 14/09/2021 22:28

I'll be happy to get pain relief out of the phone consultation really, it's just got incredibly painful.
Thanks for the suggestions though!

Mag sulph paste from the chemist!
That's going to be glorious when it goes Grin rubs thighs

welshweasel · 14/09/2021 22:31

Looks like an infected sebaceous cyst that could do with incision and drainage. I would ask the GP to refer you in to see the surgeons!

Thunderboxskin · 14/09/2021 22:35

Surgeons.... my hope for an antibiotic is not likely then lol

Pinkpather40 · 14/09/2021 22:37

Try some apple cider vinegar (braggs). Put it on a plaster and leave it on overnight. Keep repeating daily and see if helps!

Thunderboxskin · 14/09/2021 22:42

Worth trying, thank you!

Looks a lot like my DHs sebaceous cyst.

Was the hard lump there for some time before it got angry?

He had one which went like yours, he had an appt to drain it but it healed very well on the antibiotics they gave so didn’t go ahead.

2 years later it came back (as they do) and it was like yours, hot, and in the middle of his shoulder blades. Again made an appt, was waiting to go to the GP when in the car he felt it ‘go’ down his back.

Again antibiotics - which cleared it again. This time he went back to the GP on a ‘minors’ Saturday surgery and the GP took it out leaving a small scar and a couple of dissolvable stitches. They said they wouldn’t have removed it while infected it needed to have healed.

Never came back.

I did post pictures in the sporner corner before anyone accuses me!!

FeatheredHope · 14/09/2021 22:43

Please post over on sporners. And post pictures when it gets drained ;)

ShaneTheThird · 14/09/2021 22:43

Honestly op I would swerve these home made concoctions until you have spoken to a Dr. You really don't want this getting worse and giving you a nasty blood infection.

Thunderboxskin · 15/09/2021 06:44

Sorry for sounding daft but what's corners corner? Did I post in the wrong place? (Sorry!)

OP posts:
Thunderboxskin · 15/09/2021 06:45

Sporners corner even

OP posts:
20viona · 15/09/2021 06:46

That's a sebaceous cyst and needs lancing.

onelittlefrog · 15/09/2021 06:48

I really don't recommend asking mumsnet for medical advice. People here are not qualified and might give you the wrong advice. I know it's frustrating but you just need to wait for your GP appointment.
