Would you say this was a low calorie day?

Breakfast - oatsosimple porridge (the strawberry one) with skimmed milk followed by a bacon and egg - both fried in a little oil - sandwich on wholemeal bread, no sauce or butter

Dinner - grilled chicken breast, loads of spinach. Homemade salad consisting of tomatoes, onions, peppers, celery, sweetcorn, beetroot and cucumber. Mixed in with some natural yoghurt and lemon juice instead of mayo.

Snacks - a banana, a packet of quavers, a fudge.

You’re not a whale. MN is bonkers.

I would recommend stirring the fudge into hot porridge for a delicious treaty swirl, and putting sauce in a bacon and egg sandwich, because life’s too short and I’ve evolved to eat nice things.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 13/09/2021 20:47

Well done on your weight loss and your exercise!

Hope you’re enjoying your holiday!

moynomore · 13/09/2021 20:51

OP isn't asking about whether her day's meals were healthy or balanced. The question was about calories. God people of smug.

@Mariell

Not particularly. What are Quavers?
🤣🤣🤣
DGFB · 13/09/2021 20:53

Yep, fairly low calorie

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 13/09/2021 20:54

Theres some right food twattery on this thread.

Regularsizedrudy · 13/09/2021 20:55

You had 2 breakfasts so no

Gorl · 13/09/2021 20:57

@AWiseWomanOnceSaidFuckThisShit

I know I asked for it but this thread has made me feel like a fucking whale :-(
Please don’t feel this way, OP. Your day sounds completely normal with a healthy range of veg, grains etc.

Mumsnet is famous for posts promoting seriously disordered eating. Some of the absolutely insane comments on this thread (like ‘filling up’ on glasses of water, which literally has no calories - advice direct from the anorexia handbook) are designed to put people down and make the poster feel superior. It is no reflection of what’s healthy, or right for you.

Please don’t use this site as a bellwether for the health of your diet because it does NOT promote healthy, safe eating habits in the slightest.

BoredZelda · 13/09/2021 21:01

No idea about the calories, but it equates to about 25 WW points on the plan I’m on. The plan gives 30 per day plus 4 if you breakdown the weekly points. The 11k steps would give you a few activity points too, so, if I were to do what you are, I’d consider that a win.

Note for all those “switch to proper porridge” people, the sachets have the same number of points, which I assume is because it uses sweeteners rather than sugar.

KaycePollard · 13/09/2021 21:02

It's a bit processed. Quavers? Empty food. And why not just plain oats. Processed food has a lot of sneaky calories.

NavigatingAdolescence · 13/09/2021 21:04

@VladmirsPoutine

I just wanted to say that I've been on Mumsnet for years and have read countless of threads & posts but this sentence, this single sentence, is hands down the most batshit thing I have ever read on here. It's actually insane:

Europeans shouldn’t really eat tropical fruit like bananas - we didn’t evolve to eat it.

How so?

Humans now are the same as they have been for tens of thousands of years. I.E. before planes. We evolved to be able to digest the food we could grow/catch. Not food from the other side of the planet.

So the best “diet” is always that which is natural and grows where you live (and also for the planet).

We’ve been brainwashed by food manufacturers - who couldn’t give a toss how unhealthy it makes you as long as you eat more of it (growing their profits) into thinking that highly processed foods with manufactured vitamins, minerals and flavourings are as good for us as actual food. Even natural food has been wrecked nutritionally by intensive farming methods. (Eg chicken is now higher fat and lower protein than it was in the 1960s/70s because of the shit they feed them to make them green faster = more profit.)

And it’s fucking us up.

But sure. I’m batshit. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is an easy, but uncomfortable, listen if you want to understand it more.

Sounds like a normal amount of calories to me. Doesn't sound like you got your 5 a day though unless your salad was truly massive - I'd add some fruit to your breakfast or another fruit/veg snack during the day.

@MarleneDietrichsSmile are you really tall/very active? Maintenance calories for the average woman would be about 2000 (which is the RDA for women).

TheFoundations · 13/09/2021 21:05

@Regularsizedrudy

You had 2 breakfasts so no
But what if the two breakfasts added up with the rest of the calories for the day don't meet OP's calorie requirement? What logic are you using to come up with this answer?

OP has basically asked 1+?=7, right? And people are giving answers like 'No, because your 1 is too big.'

00100001 · 13/09/2021 21:05

@Regularsizedrudy

You had 2 breakfasts so no
.... So?

She had two breakfasts and 1 other meal.... That's 3 meals.

How many meals rid YOU have today? Confused

NavigatingAdolescence · 13/09/2021 21:06

Water is really important.

Our ancestors got most of their water needs met by the food they ate. If they were thirsty, they felt hungry.

We don’t get much water in our food now. But the body still signals thirst as hunger. If you hydrate properly, your hunger signal is more likely to be true, hence you won’t overeat.

Honestly, I’ve had my eyes opened wide the last 3 months.

KaycePollard · 13/09/2021 21:06

I've also walked 11k steps today

That's really not a lot - I did around 15,000 today, just moving around. And 25,000 yesterday on a day out.

10k steps a day is an absolute minimum, not a goal to aim for!

anon12345678901 · 13/09/2021 21:06

@CallMeRisley

I thought the “what are quavers” was the craziest comment on this thread, but then I read

Europeans shouldn’t really eat tropical fruit like bananas - we didn’t evolve to eat it.

Wtf Confused

It's a banana and they're actually really good for you. Like wtaf?!

I've never seen it before but this really is encouraging disordered eating. 1200 calories is very low for an adult human. OP I would be wary of eating too little, the body will put itself into starvation mode, you won't lose weight as it will start to store fat. Your metabolism can also slow to preserve energy.
I'm just saying be careful with some recommendations, they can actually do more harm than good.

Assume you aren’t chained to a desk for 8-10 hours a day.
KaycePollard · 13/09/2021 21:09

Oh but I am - I generally work a 12 hour day. But still walk a lot.

NerrSnerr · 13/09/2021 21:09

I'd love to see an honest weekly food diary of all these people who question a bag of quavers.

Some will have eating disorders for sure, there'll be some who genuinely eat clean but I reckon some others will be eating tubes of Pringles, McDonalds every day and finishing the day with a family sized Dairy Milk but come on here to subtly put others down to feel better about themselves.

hermioneweasley44 · 13/09/2021 21:10

Round of applause for @KaycePollard and her several thousand steps.

Depends on the banana

I can’t believe these comments. Yes that is a low calorie day! You skipped a lunch, you had a decent breakfast and then chicken salad for tea. Your snacks are processed but low calorie versions. I’d be starving if that’s all I ate. You need to work out your BMR using your weight and height- you’re eating very little.

Don’t be such an arse.

After cancer, I embarked on a fitness regime. I walk a circuit of 9.8 miles most days which comes in at around 19,600 steps.

I don’t have paid work and it takes me 2 1/2 hours.

That’s one hell of an ask for working people.

belimoo · 13/09/2021 21:11

That would be a lot of food for me but I struggle to believe it's only 1300 calories so perhaps the portions are smaller than I'm imagining.

1300 calories is about right for me if I want a very slow but steady weight loss. I am a sedentary sloth though.
